My daughter has just called one of her good friends from school (a sikh girl of Indian heritage) to see if she'd like to go swimming: the girl asked her mum, who came to the phone and told my daughter: "we have no control who our daughter is friends with at school, but outside of school, we do. We don't trust white people, so the answer is no". My daughter is really upset and confused at such overt racism. She has been brought up to treat everyone with equal respect, regardless of race/religion/sexual orientation, and she just doesn't get this at all. I feel like calling the woman and having it out with her; can you imagine how she'd feel if I'd forbidden my daughter to associate with their daughter, on the grounds that "I don't trust sikhs/asians//brown people"? people are encouraged to report various matters that are social, racially, abuse, relevant, why not have a word with the school or social services.Not out of revenge but for a thousand other reasons that cross all social conscensies, and racist boundaries.
