Are we losing our identity?

All of our signings so far are non British, although I'm impressed with all of them. I would prefer a mostly English/British team as I feel most most people can relate to that. It would seem that the higher we would like to progress, the less indigenous our team becomes. What is the compromise?

Do you feel that being an "English/British" team has formed Leicester's identity up until now? What do you think our "identity" is to people who don't support Leicester? Do they care? Probably not.

Of course, if we could win the European Cup with a team all born within a stones throw of the ground, like Celtic in the 1960's then I'm sure that would be absolutely fantastic. Would that be British enough for you, even though a team drawn from that pool would likely have a mixture of other ethnic "heritage"?

I'd say just enjoy the current squad doing well. We've always had a fair mixture of nationalities, as have most teams and in the last 10-15 years, many of them have been absolute gash. Would you prefer Cambiasso and Mahrez had not been recruited?

The vast majority of people probably wouldn't be able to put their finger on Leicester City's "identity" anyway. If you asked football fans in general what they think about the identity of say, Leeds, they'll say "dirty bstards" even though most of the players who formed that team are now either pensioners or dead.

Surely our identity is based more on the style of football that we play rather than the nationality of the players?

Up until incredibly recently I doubt many City fans, let alone supporters of rival clubs, could have identified a style of football synonymous with Leicester. The hard work and endeavour which we've displayed in recent years is mirrored in the football of Okazaki and Kante so I would like to think that our identity is safe.

Stupid thread.

If you want an English team, I'll see you in league 1.

Our grass roots football set-up in this country isn;t good enough. The Quality of player is not there.

The club's identity is it's location not the personnel. Most of us wouldn't support the club if it didn't represent the City of Leicester.

We would lose our identity if football clubs in this country were like American Football club franchises in the USA that were sold to the highest bidding city (e.g. St Louis Cardinals to Arizona Cardinals). The nearest situation to that was the hopefully never to be repeated fiasco of Wimbledon becoming Milton Keynes Dons.

I'm sure all players are contractually obliged to do so by the club, but I wouldn't think they engage with it as throughly for the reasons I have mentioned. It is important for Swansea to have an Ashley Williams or Tottenham a Harry Kane or Newcastle a Jack Colback not just to reinforce the clubs mentality on the pitch but also its morals and ideals off it by someone who genuinely respects and understands them.

Yeah, because Japanese and Algerians are, essentially, less than Brits in terms of morals and ethics. Bloody Johnny Foreigners and their lack of charity.

If it weren't for the big clubs gobbling up the best talent in their academies never to be seen again, we actually would have British talent. They don't get games or to play as they're stuck in an academy or a big club they'll never have the chance to play in.

That's why they're expensive as young players don't get the chance, unlike abroad where young players are given a chance so there is more of them, so their price goes down. It's supply and demand. If we had the good prospects joining Leicester or championship clubs instead of Chelsea maybe we would see more. But until then you have to let the rest of Europe grow the best young players for us and we can't culture our own.

OMG. This forum has again revealed itself as being full of nutters living in 1960.

"I would prefer a mostly English/British team" - Leicester is a team based in the UK

"..I feel most people can relate to that" - small-minded xenophobia

"the less indigenous our team becomes" - illusions of authentic origin much the same as the BNP

I don't agree with the OP, I think he's a bit of a simpleton.

Regardless, why do you feel the need to get ridiculously offensive and touchy about anything race related on any thread? It's sad and pathetic and I don't really remember you posting anything that wasn't about race.

Intimidating atmosphere and fans getting plaudits from all over the world, 7+ domestic players in the squad, two wins out of two again getting coverage worldwide, if that's the new Leicester City identity I'm all for it!

Ok, I just fell in. If he's human, eligible and good enough, I don't care which plot of soil he was born on.

If you're expressing concern that the quality of English players is diminishing, as is the culture that produces them, and that the game as a result is shrinking, as the haves get all the goodies and there's very little left for the rest..............then I'm with you.

Does Leicester as a city not pride itself on being one of the most harmonious multicultural cities in Europe?

Living within the city are people from all backgrounds, cultures and Religions.

So surely having a football team which is also very multicultural is now more representative of who we are and what we pride ourselves on as a city.

You could argue by signing players from all over the world we are as a football club only now starting to match the identity of the city we represent.

We are losing our identity, but not for the reasons you have outlined.

Personally, I don't really have a problem with the club adopting an international recruitment policy at all. This is a competitive league where clubs can attract players from all over the world, and we need to attract the best we can to compete.

The loss of identity comes mainly from our featureless stadium and the fact that it is named after the owners' company. I know this can sound like a minor grumble but I really think it matters to people.

The club is essentially a megaphone for the promotion of a duty-free company, but most people don't care because I think the majority now see this as the price of success.

Not in terms of the playing staff but I do have a slight discomfort with all the King Power branding and use of gold in the kit.

What they said.

In terms of playing staff, I like our mix of homegrown talent and foreign players who've settled well into the club. As long as they care about representing Leicester City and don't have a mercenary attitude, that's the main thing.

Some very valid points made from reasonable people and some blinkered comments from other. I merely suggested it would be nice to have more British people in the team as we are a British team. Don't think that is racist as some have suggested. I realise that to progress up the league then the only way is to buy overseas players, just wondering what others felt and what is the trade off. Some people on this site are mistaking my question as an intent but it's not, just a question. To be called a Forest/Derby fan by one individual and an implied racist by another just really shows their level of intelligence.
