Stoke away.... Pre match thoughts...

It's going to be tough to score against butland! mind you, I think our finishing looks a tad better this campaign thus far.

surely Stoke cannot lose three home games on the spin. stats alone say a draw is the best we can hope for.

with that in mind, I think we should really go at them. Sitting back and hoping for a smash n grab 1-0 as per last year is inviting the stats to be right.

Would be absolutely delighted with a boring 0-0 draw and maintain our unbeaten start.

Still this...

If you haven't seen my thread, I've created a Leicester City blog at https://yourdailyfoxes.wordpress.com/

Here's my preview for the Stoke game, let me know what you think and if there's anything you think should be added or taken out: https://yourdailyfoxes.wordpress.com/2015/09/19/the-foxes-v-stoke-city-preview/

As I say in the piece, I - and many others it appears - think we should play a 4-2-3-1 with Drinkwater and Kante sitting, with Dyer, Riyad and Albrighton supporting Vardy. Impose our game on to them and press high to turn over the ball high up the pitch. Do think and I think we'll win. Line up again with two deep banks of four or a 4-5-1 and I think we'll struggle.

Thanks  :scarf:

You obviously have good knowledge of the game Thrac and I honestly like reading your thoughts but you've completely over thought this one.

Mahrez impact was because he had a free role for the second half, roaming around the final third and getting on the ball as often as possible.

Surely ur winding us up suggesting to drop him and Drinkwater (who has even more of an influence over the team as a whole)? It's madness!

We're on a great run with a fearless attitude and full of confidence so why change it to nullify them? Let them worry about us!

I fully expect us to get at them from the off to get an early goal.

If it happens their crowd will turn on them, they'll be under pressure and if we're clever we'll be hitting them on the counter all afternoon.

Fancy us tomorrow 1-3 Leicester

Couldn't agree more regarding your first point Albert. The problem that Mahrez had first half against Villa was that whenever he got ball Villa had three men on him hence why he didn't get a lot of joy as they clearly had a game plan to nullify him. Things changed in the second half because Ranieri adjusted his tactics by introducing Dyer and then later Kante which gave them more to think about and consequently Villa had to adjust themselves to the new threat meaning Mahrez got less attention and more time on the ball unchallenged.

If we're to beat Stoke we really need to set up differently to them and ask questions of their team. We know their midfield is technically very good and they have a cracking keeper, but I'd say that their backline isn't particularly strong and we need to test them out, whilst their attack is very inconsistent. I think we need to target the full backs particularly Johnson if he plays, and Mahrez would be ideal to exploit his weaknesses and also force him to sit deep therefore limiting his movement going forward.

This is a very different Stoke side to the one we faced at the Britannia last season. I expect them to try and retain possession of the ball a lot more, play through the middle of the park and move through the field of play as a unit. At times we'll need to show high levels of concentration and patience when out of possession, however when we get the ball we'll need to break quickly and get in behind them. Our main advantage in this game will probably be our stamina and if we can try and stifle their possession early on whilst setting a high tempo I can see them dropping off in the last 20 minutes and us causing them problems.

I dont think any team will win by more than one goal. I think it'll be tight as Stoke will really be up for it with their fans behind them.

I think we'll score first with Vardy and then they will get one back. 1-1

This is a tough game to call so I want to say a draw but in my heart I think we can beat this lot if we play well, its all going to come down to how well we play and the starting squad. They are going to try and take Mahrez out of the game so I feel we need other attacking options in midfield to open them up.

I really hope Mahrez doesn't get any Injury today, Mark hughes teams are renowned for being dirty and they might try and rough him up

Comfortable win. Stoke being under pressure to attack and win should leave plenty of space for our pacey attacking play. Can see us being three up inside half an hour if we start quickly. Though it's more likely that the goals will come in the 2nd half. 3-0 Leicester.

Stoke City fans confident of a win

good luck to them. A guy i worked with was a massive stoke fan but passed away earlier this year. I miss that guy for bants! wish i could be there for him today in the away end but got my little girl. we shall all be there in spirit!

It's likely to be a tough bruising battle. But one we can still will provided we take the game to them with pace. I'd like to see Shinji play close to Whelan as he's there out ball in the middle. He just sits and plays the ball simple. If we stop him they will have real problems, especially with Adams is also out. Hopefully Huth will be up for the game seeing as it's Stoke.

As I said it won't be easy but these are the type of Games we need to start winning to keep the run going.

I agree about us winning - 2-1. I even like the "fearless" concept except that we haven't been "fearless", not against Spurs and not against Bournemouth. We've been quite restrained at times.

Mahrez should always have a free role but that very fact makes the point for me that we'll be vulnerable out wide on our right if, as I expect, Stoke exert some pressure to begin with...and then some.

There's an argument for taking the initiative, going for the throat and trying to open more self-doubt in the Stoke psyche. We attacked with gusto against Sunderland and what a sight.

But that was at home and I don't see Ranieri setting up that way at the Britannia so Mahrez will be virtually isolated and, without runners off and about him, he'll quite possibly be as ineffective as he was last time at Stoke for all that he's in a richer vein of form right now and managed to score from nearly nothing in terms of opportunity and support against Spurs.

On the basis of how I believe we'll approach the Stoke game I still believe he'll be more effective coming on later and helping increase the pressure on Stoke.

Drinkwater's a harder argument but King and Ulloa will give us greater strength in the air from set pieces, which will probably be needed, and it will give Kante the starting spot he's deserved for some time and in a game when we will surely need his energy and tenacity.

Your argument about going for an early goal and continuing to counter attack is fine - except we've not generally scored early on because we don't commit the numbers in support.

If we can and do there's no reason it shouldn't work as well as anything else - like against Sunderland - and it certainly plays to our strengths. It's just that most times we seem to commit more in terms of attacking support as the game goes on rather than from the beginning and, whatever our approach against Stoke, we have to guard that defensive weakness on our right and our failure to track central runners between the halfway line and our penalty box.

Shinji for his goal threat, energy and ball-pinching qualities or Ulloa for his height, the outlet ball and his own goals potential?  I think we'll use both but there's so many good but difficult choices for Ranieri.

Your point about Whelan is a good one. Nullify the source of supply and the job gets easier. Stoke have some good attackers and, often, the best way to deal with them is to stop them getting the ball in the first place.

But do you think Ranieri will do that? Our toughest opponent on paper this season has been Spurs and we were so damned negative, even at home. Those two immovable banks of four behind the halfway line still linger in my mind like a footballing nightmare. They weren't impregnable. We should have lost. But we didn't. And that's what bothers me. Because, given the result, we'll doubtless do it again.

Until he feels we are safe from relagation then no, I don't think he will. He's too pragmatic. An odds man. Pick up a point here and a point there. That's his mantra.

He may try new things once/if we are secure later in the season.
