A50 Traffic Jam.

The collective term of "morons" should be applied to all involved in deciding to do that on a match day and on the road where nearly all Leicester fans travel to Stoke - unless you think it may have been done on purpose for that particular time

Wasn't helped by the grinning idiot highways worker laughing at us as he collected the traffic cones back in and I'm surprised someone didn't get out of a car and wipe the smile of his face

We were stuck in it best part of an hour. Only managed to get in a quick couple of pints before the game!

Seriously though, idiotic planning by the highway management. Almost feels it was done on purpose.

Joke!

2 hours 20mins to do a 50 min journey..

Wondered if the team had to endure such an horrendous journey? Glad we took a point !

They travelled Friday night so I'm asssuming they always do.

I had tickets to the famous 5-3 Man U game last year; and at the last minute ended up taking to my son to hospital. ( I get a few games each year as I'm in a shared season ticket syndicate)

He was fine, just ended up having his tonsils taken out. I spent the match time staring directly at the ground listening for noise and following BBC text updates on a the infirmary's poor wifi.

I had to a silent walk like an egyptian dance when we scored up and down the children's ward.

Life lesson: never make a room of kids laugh when they have had their tonsils out!

Perhaps this should be a new thread.

Pretty sure the true life lesson in that is go to footy rather than take your son to the hospital.

Funnily enough I haven't got any kids.

Yeah we got well and truly stuck in it, just made kick off, and to make matters worse we were behind a stinking old Cosworth Sierra running way too rich poisoning everyone around it and with a childish noisy exhaust :-(

I missed the first 20 mins.

I got out of my car then heard the roar as Stoke went 1-0 up as I was walking to the ground.

I got in and went for a quick piss and heard the second go in.

FFS I thought, I haven't seen a ball kicked and we're 2-0 down.

All's well that ends well I suppose.  :)

Joke wasn't it. Got in about 5 minutes before kick off. Didn't help that I was stuck behind a cattle lorry that stank of shit. I suppose it could have just the smell of Stoke though.

We got to the ground at a reasonable time still (was just before about 2pm tbf) but the traffic jam was a joke. Anyone notice there were very little indication too? Didn't know if it was a crash or roadworks.

Just received the following email, thought you might be interested

Dear Clive

Thank you for your enquiry into the A50 roadwork’s at Blythe Bridge Bypass on Saturday 19th September.

The lane closures were to allow essential maintenance works to be undertaken.  Minor carriageway repairs were required  which could only be repaired under a lane closure, as lane closures were required we also took the opportunity to carry out grass cutting ,litter picking and surface water gully cleaning while the lane closure was on.

The works were planned to be completed by 13:00 but at approximately 11:00 an incident occurred on the eastbound carriageway adjacent to the traffic management. This incident was cleared but a further more serious incident then occurred at 11:30 also on the eastbound carriageway. This incident required the eastbound carriageway to be closed and so our resources were required to assist the Police with their closure and to clear the incident. This delayed the removal of the traffic management from the westbound carriageway.

There were no incidents on the westbound carriageway during the works but a review of a static camera shows there was traffic congestion before any incidents took place. However once the incidents occurred on the eastbound carriageway  traffic was slowing to look at the incident on the eastbound carriageway leading to some near misses due to drivers inattention  which had a significant effect on the congestion.

With regards to planning works, all works are booked onto a Highways England roadspace booking system and is given a unique identification number. The system is then checked to see if any other planned works are within a 10km radius. Normally all major events such as the Download Festival and World Superbikes are placed onto this system so that the potential increase in traffic is identified and roadworks can be planned accordingly. The system was checked on the 19th September, there were no other works or events listed on the A50 and therefore we could not foresee any reason to alter our planned works.

We do not routinely check Stoke City Football fixtures as we have not previously encountered any problems with works coinciding with Stoke home games in the past. We do accept that this is an error and we will add these to the items we consider when planning any future works.

We apologise if you have been inconvenienced when using our network and we will ensure that future necessary works take into account all relevant events

We trust this answers your query and explains what happened on Saturday.

Kind Regards

Matthew Nance
