Cue the defence slating. Arsenal post match thread.

Embarrassing so many leaving early. I have never left before the final whistle and cannot understand it. Even when we are playing crap - stay to the end!

Is a very bizarre thing to do particularly when plenty of people justify the high ticket prices because 'that's the price you pay for seeing top teams'.

The amount of people leaving with 10 minutes to go was incredible given how entertaining the game was. I presume these people wouldn't leave a show with 10% of the play left? I will never understand the beat the traffic mentality.

Not an expert but thought de laet looked our best defender yesterday

Yea, he was particularly good when he completely forgot Walcott was playing and allowed him to run in on his outside......

So, he showed the striker out wide? What a terrible, terrible bit of defending. Wait no, the other one.

We obviously have some weaknesses at the back but just because Arsenal scored 5 we shouldn't change our philosophy. I still enjoyed watching us yesterday, we gave it ago and there's no shame losing to a better team who were on form.

As I keep saying, we must drop De Laet and Schlupp from the full back positions going forward, eventually we'll surely change that. But we need to just accept that we're going to lose some games. That doesn't mean we're approaching games wrong, we're just not the best side in the country.

That's football, we move on and I hope we're as open and attacking as ever against Norwich. If we are, there's a good chance we'll win.

I still get frustrated with Schmeichel going too much off the line from time to time, surprised that Stowell hasn't (probably) hasn't mentioned this to him before.

The people slating De Laet are proving they will criticise the guy regardless of what type of game he has and that he will get pilloried whatever he does. He was our best defender yesterday and did about as well as you can do against the likes of Walcott & Sanchez and co. There was so much space in the middle of the park because of how attacking we were that the back line was always going to be under significant pressure for large parts of the game. We were set up in an admittedly entertaining but (in my opinion) recklessly aggressive way and were asking for trouble.

Says a lot about the change in expectations really. We were outplayed and beaten by the better team - we were just far too open. We will learn more from that yesterday than any of our good results this season.

Hope not. What did we learn? That we're not as good as Arsenal?

No reason to take too much from that game. We were beaten by a better side and yet it was far more satisfying than some victories over the years.

If we lose trying to entertain then so be it. That way of playing football has given us a great start to the season. Reading too much into the defeat would only stunt our progress. That was Pearson's biggest error.

No knee jerk reactions please.

Well it had to happen sometime didn't it. In a dominating display of midfield creativity and attacking prowess, Arsenal tore apart our shoddy defensive rearguard and exposed its flaws with ruthless effect. But then, it was coming. Our defensive frailties were glaring in the games against Villa and Stoke, and playing such an open, attacking game with two wingers, two strikers and two attacking but defensively poor full backs against the movement of Arsenal was always going to be a risky move.

-----------------------------------------------------

My tuppence worth. An entertaining game despite the result, plenty of positives on show and plenty of negatives too. Finding the balance between defence and attack will be tough, as we can't keep defending as poorly and leaving ourselves as exposed as we did yesterday.

Would you prefer the year we were relegated from the Championship? Best defence in the league but where did that get us

Spot on. We are not a top 4 side, we are looking to stabilise and hopefully improve on 14th.

As fans we are being greatly entertained watching our team - within a great home atmosphere - playing an attacking brand of football which so far has been gaining us points. Yes we probably need to replace the starting full backs, but enjoy it ffs!

I simply feel we have two full backs who are better at going forward with the ball (or to run onto it) than they are as out and out defenders.

They are wing-backs! The pair of them. Added to that we have two solid and strong centre backs but neither too good when tricky little strikers and oncoming mids are running at them.

Arsenal are a good side and adept at doing offensively exactly what we ain't too good at defensively. Hence the result I'm afraid.

Either we shield the defence with an out and out DM or we go 5 at the back and let RDL and Schlupp link up going forward. Not for EVERY game, but certainly when we play teams that cut through the middle for fun.

For instance, I think we're more geared up for playing Man Utd at present than we are Arsenal or Man City. Their slower build up play will give our lads more time to get into position.

That was incredible to watch, the ball was about a foot away from him as the pass was made. In the position he was in it was obvious it was probably going to be played in behind him and he looked completely unaware of the danger. He was better overall yesterday but he's been so unconvincing this season.

Kante 85.1% pass completion yesterday. Not totally convinced he's as poor on the ball (or all-conquering in the tackle) as some are suggesting. Could be that he's losing the ball in bad areas - as I say I've only seen the highlights from yesterday.

Given CR doesn't seem to want to play 3 at the back, we will Hopefully be a little more defensively minded against the better teams. If \ when Inler gets up to speed then something along the lines of:

Kasper

RDL, Wes Huth Fuchs

Dyer Inler, Kante, Schlupp

Mahrez

Vardy

Posted

De Laet was best defender yesterday and that says something.

The amount of times he put his body on the line, and actually had to clean up after Schlupp believe it or not.

He kept getting dragged across and blocking shots from Schlupps man.

Drinkwater was immense.

Okazaki offers nothing.

Vardy is class.

Mahrez tried to much and just wasn't his game.

Kasper was shoddy.

I was going to add something technical and insightful, but after some thought I realised I'm over thinking it, so.............what you said.

We were snookered under Pearson and grew into this style of play. Same again for Norwich please.

Yep... Was just running back as fast as he could not looking at anything inparticular. Never seen anything like that before, only when everyone shouted that he actually needed to look did he bother. How can you forget to look where there player is!?

It's difficult to explain, but if you saw it then it was pretty unbelievable.

Neither were as noticeable yesterday as they had been. Tended to keep the passes simpler.

4-4-2. Let's try it with a solid back line using Fuchs, Benalouane or Wazilewski instead of wing backs DeLaet and Schlupp. We could use this for the really tough fixtures such as Arsenal, Chelsea, Man U, Man City .... Properly defend and hit em on the break with Vardy. All other fixtures can be our current formation with wing backs......also Ulloa in for Okazaki

And then he put in a good tackle to stop Walcott. A really bizarre incident.

That's the defensive lineup I advocated during the Week. You definitely need to use your experienced defenders against the big clubs to have a chance. Arsenal were finding space too easily in and around our box.
