Stevosevic Posted 23 November 2015 Posted 23 November 2015 Correct me if i'm wrong, i don't think we've conceded from open play since Simpson and Fuchs came into the team for Norwich away. Previous: 14 goals conceded 7 games 2 per game Since Norwich away: 6 goals conceded 6 games 2 clean sheets 1 per game As well as this improvement in conceding less goals per game, I believe 4 came from set pieces (1 v Norwich, 2 v Southampton, 1 v WBA) and the other 2 were penalties (1 v WBA, 1 v Watford) Is it fair to say CR has turned the defence around and conceding from set pieces is something we may just have to live with due to the small squad we have? I think we've looked far more solid since they came in to the starting eleven.
Fox42 Posted 23 November 2015 Posted 23 November 2015 It also seems that Huth plays better around defensively minded players. Schlupp and De Laet are too attacking minded and that probably played on Huth's mind and how much ground does he have to cover. Ever since these two came into the side, Huth has been performing much better.
Fox92 Posted 23 November 2015 Posted 23 November 2015 We have two proper full backs now and it's great. I also agree Shaffu's comment above about Huth performing better after a relatively slow start. The whole back four looks to have more confidence now. In games this season I've seen both Morgan and Huth look comfortable on the ball, and not necessarily in our half either.

Thats how I am looking at It too, but before saying we've cracked it in defence I would like to see a few more games in the bag. So far so good, but just like some too negative posts also when things are looking good, It needs a 8-12 game run before we can analyse the changes and performances.
Cumbria Fox Posted 23 November 2015 Posted 23 November 2015 I think Morgan and Huth have swapped positions. Huth was playing right centre back, with Morgan on his left. Recently they have been playing the other way round. I suspect this has helped.
egg_fried_rice Posted 23 November 2015 Posted 23 November 2015 Is it fair to say CR has turned the defence around and conceding from set pieces is something we may just have to live with due to the small squad we have? I think you're right, and this point also reinforces the argument for Ulloa to partner Vardy up front. I don't dislike Okazaki, but a goal and assist from an otherwise average performance, plus his obvious abilities in defending set pieces means we should start with the same starting 11 as Newcastle for our next run of games.
Stevosevic Posted 23 November 2015 Author Posted 23 November 2015 Correct, said the same in the 3-4-3 thread. i promise i haven't stolen what you've said, i'd just noticed myself.
Babylon Posted 23 November 2015 Posted 23 November 2015 i promise i haven't stolen what you've said, i'd just noticed myself. Yeah Yeah Yeah!!!!
Len Finsbury Posted 23 November 2015 Posted 23 November 2015 When I read this on the other thread I couldn't quite believe it considering our style of play. The stats show we're actually difficult to break down from open play unlike some would have us believe. It also highlights where we should be focussing our extra training!
Guest ttfn Posted 23 November 2015 Posted 23 November 2015 I think Morgan and Huth have swapped positions. Huth was playing right centre back, with Morgan on his left. Recently they have been playing the other way round. I suspect this has helped. I wonder if that's because he and Fuchs might be better able to communicate in German? What's really funny about the turnaround is that 5 or 6 games ago people were saying "they concede too many goals, their goalscoring will inevitably dry up and then they'll be in trouble". Since then we've shored up the defence, scored just as regularly and have gone top of the league.
adam1 Posted 23 November 2015 Posted 23 November 2015 Schlupp will never be as good as Fuchs. Also Fuchs is an out and out left back. Schlupp isn't. I was surprised Fuchs signed for us - I thought and still think that he is a better/more important signing than Inler. The left back position was our weakest position, it needed to be improved. Fuchs was the type of player we needed. He is a massive step up in class for us.
ThingsCouldGetMessi Posted 23 November 2015 Posted 23 November 2015 Both full backs deserve credit. You can see why Christian Fuchs has played at the highest level and he is starting to show that he can be a very valuable member of our team. Danny Simpson is a lot better defensively than De Laet, has often been in the right place when needed and is proving the doubters wrong.
ScouseFox Posted 23 November 2015 Posted 23 November 2015 ay we're good at defending now we dropped schlupp WHO SAW DAT COMIN
ealingfox Posted 23 November 2015 Posted 23 November 2015 The Norwich goal wasn't directly from the set-piece. Still want us to bin off Simmo.
ThaiFox Posted 23 November 2015 Posted 23 November 2015 My comments on the after match ratings have been saying this since they both came into the side. Huth & Morgan can now concentrate on their jobs, rather than worrying about covering for De Laet & Shlupp, who are not premier league full backs. Both have improved enormously since Simpson & Fuchs came in. Simpson has really impressed me as I didn't rate him last season. Fuchs has come in and you notice how few dangerous crosses come in from that side. Fuchs is such a classy player and I think a huge influence on the whole back line. I also think these two coming in have helped Kasper. It must give confidence to a keeper if you know your whole back four are proper defenders rather than there to fill the positions. I've noticed Kasper coming for crosses more since these two came in. I think this comes from crosses being more rushed, rather than crosses when players have more time and space to set something dangerous up. But it is still a concern defending corners and set pieces. Kasper, Huth & especially Morgan (as captain) should command the defense better in these situations. DD cleared yet another off the line on Saturday from a corner, (I think that's the forth or fifth this season) to a dire Newcastle side. If Newcastle had scored from that, it could have kick started and given Newcastle a lot of confidence and belief. Without question, having Ulloa in the side gives much needed height, and for me he is a much better option than Okazaki, both up front and in defense.
UpTheLeagueFox Posted 23 November 2015 Posted 23 November 2015 Didn't Pearson sign Simpson and Fuchs Yes but sssshhhhhh

ScouseFox Posted 23 November 2015 Posted 23 November 2015 Didn't Pearson sign Simpson and Fuchs nah mate leicester did this isnt pearson fc
glenelgfox Posted 24 November 2015 Posted 24 November 2015 Must say I thought Fuchs was a great signing. Never previousl rated Simpson as I don't think he offers much attacking wise but he is playing well and f%€k me he nearly scored from the passage of play that Okazaki ended up bundling in.

I wouldn't dare deploying Schlupp as a proper defender, at most he may act as a left wingback, but that's the maximum of defensive duties I can see him fulfill to everyone's satisfaction. He's got to find his feet in a left midfield, left-wing position. Just don't let him shoot.
Webbo Posted 24 November 2015 Posted 24 November 2015 Didn't Pearson sign Simpson Depends on whether we're talking about his recent performances or him throttling his wife.
Babylon Posted 24 November 2015 Posted 24 November 2015 The Norwich goal wasn't directly from the set-piece. Still want us to bin off Simmo. Bit pedantic, came within seconds of the first cross coming in. You could rule out any number by saying as soon as a short corner is taken it's open play, or if it's not converted directly in one touch from the corner or free kick it's back in open play. Reality is it came from a set piece situation we failed to deal with.
