David Bowie Dies of Cancer

Woke up this morning looked at my phone and saw the Sky news notification of this. I am 29, grew up with my mum listening to his albums all the time and really liked it. Sufragette city and Starman are incredible songs and I listen to them both all the time. Their were rumours of a tour a few years ago and I would have paid mega bucks to go and see him.

 

So sad, RIP.

Simply put, one of the the most influential musicians who has ever lived. Up there with the likes of Michael Jackson, Elvis Presley and The Beatles for me. Rest in peace Starman.

Huge Bowie fan, only really got into his music in the past 10 years

 

Diamond Dogs and Station To Station my faves but anything he did in the 70s stands up as good as any music ever.

 

The saddest thing is he was still being creative, still had something new to offer

Not a huge fan, just not my scene on a whole, but there's a couple of songs I like, think he's done something for everyone really, I certainly respect what he did and am shocked by the news.

'Rock n Roll suicide' is one of my favourite Bowie tracks.

 

Agree with that, was never really bothered with him until I heard that track.

He was my first live gig, and always remained a favourite.

I highly suggest listening to "Lazarus" off of 'Blackstar' - possibly watching the visual that goes with the song.

 

The man wrote it for today, I have no doubt.

 

Easy to say it in hindsight but it does seem the entire album is his farewell. Wouldn't be surprised if he planned it, if he got diagnosed 18 months ago you'd assume he'd have been setting everything in place.

Exceptionally talented guy. Must thank him for Jean Genie, released the month me and the missus started going out. Danced to that every time it was played at the various night clubs in the city in the eighties. Still do to this day, if it gets played at an event we are attending.

Was s toss up between JG and Alright Now as our first dance as a married couple, but we chose Free.

RIP, a true genius.

I knew about Bowie's association with Iggy Pop in the 70s, but only found out today that "Jean Genie" was partly inspired by Iggy: "he's outrageous, he screams and he bawls".....makes sense!

Lou Reed was also a great loss. It feels like I've spent my whole life listening to Dave and what a truly incredible gift he gave to the world. He may not be immortal but his music will endure.

A fantastic icon who revolutionised the music industry. His talent was extensive and his creativity knew no bounds. RIP

 

I think the fact that some of his works are among my all time favourite songs and others I'd skip with in an instance speaks volumes about the diversity of his music. He could speak to practically any taste.

Best known for his musical output as people have rightly said. Some of his roles in films were pretty damn good in their own right. Labyrinth, The Man Who Fell To Earth, The Prestige to name but 3.

 

I'm 28 so he was very much 'before my time', but I grew up listening to him and watching his videos, I think to this day there has never been anybody quite like him. Originality, abundance of talent and really was just himself (even the alter egos were probably just accentuated versions of sides of his personality), something so few artists are these days. I've got his new album and knowing what it's actually saying now, it really adds some weight to it. I haven't watched the videos to the singles and not sure I will, the 5-6 second clip I saw on the BBC, he just looked so, so frail, I don't want to remember him like that, rightly or wrongly, I want to remember him strutting his stuff and making me smile and think about things differently, from sexuality to politics and most things in between, growing up.

I get that, I probably will get round to watching them at some point, but like others have said, when celebrities die it's like 'meh' or 'ah, that's a shame', but I think a lot of people have been really hit by this one, I didn't think it would upset me as much as it has, for certain.
