They Promised so much.

I don't know why Stearman is in that team though. Did nothing wrong for us.

He did nothing right either. Much like Mattock he was young and had come through the youth set up so was hyped up , but in reality he was and is rubbish.

He was superb on his debut but i thought it was at Sunderland and he scored, i went to the game and I'm sure it was the first game of the season, but could be wrong

Through my intimate knowledge of 90s season reviews I can confirm it was Sunderland where he made his debut, Port Vale was where he broke his leg ;)

Laurrari lol lol

Foxestalk thought we'd unearthed the Peruvian Neymar despite the fact nobody had ever seen him play.

Still no more proof he existed than Leon Crnic.

laurrari was sensational

He had a massive go at NP on twitter when he left second time round about how he was too old school and didn't give youth a chance. I promptly pointed out that Jeff, Liam Moore and Andy King had done OK out of him and he should be looking a bit closer to home as to why he didn't break through.

Speaking of Pier Larrauri, here's an interesting read from last December:

Currently with Alianza Lima. So, he does exist after all.

But that picture speaks volumes - wearing the Leicester shirt and such a bitter look on his face.

Kerrea Gilbert?

He was one of those players who was absolutely shocking but got away with it because the team as a whole was taking the piss.

Waters was never going to be able to match his sensational start....still one of my greatest memories, that QF at Loftus Road

I loved Barry Davies' commentary: 'Waters, oh yes, oh yes for the youngster. I don't think he can possibly believe it'. I listened to the commentary on Radio two (in those days it was only the second half ) with, I think, Alan Parry (still around today) and Peter Jones (' blue shirt, outside his white shorts....'

I'd go for exactly the same four:

Buchanan looked sensational in his first few games, (better than Lineker)... Think he had some sort of health problem though, rather than injuries, which curtailed his career pretty early.

Waters was never going to be able to match his sensational start....still one of my greatest memories, that QF at Loftus Road!

Andrews was brilliant early in his career, but tailed off....did he not have a game where he was absolutely disastrous, (or am I confusing him with Nicky Walker)??...

Jones was unfairly lauded for that one, winning goal at Oldham....Never lived up to that promise!

Would like to add:

David Tomlin....Broke through under Bloomfield and had a really impressive few games.Remember him playing against Leeds in 1972...He burnt Paul Reaney, (England's RB), for an hour, then switched wings and tore Terry Cooper, (England's LB) a 'new one'!! Amazing performance, but never matched it!

Steve Bicknell...Introduced in 1977, again by JB. Was absolutely sensational on his debut, which was highlighted on MOTD...but drifted away, forever, within weeks!

How about Steve Sims? Good start whilst playing for us, then moved onto Derby and ended up at Watford. Always had the feeling that he could have achieved much more.

Tommy English came with a great reputation as a young, free scoring striker from Coventry, but was abysmal for us. Will never forgive Milne for the swap deal involving Jimmy Melrose.

Andy Peake made a great start as a youngster and then his iconic long range effort against Liverpool back in 1980. Lost his way after that.

Sam McMahon, watched him dominate in midfield for the reserves against man u in front of nearly 20,000 fans at filbert street and couldn't wait for his breakthrough into the first team. Whatever happened to him?

I have memories of him coming on as a second half sub against Wimbledon around 1993.  I'm sure it was his first team debut.  Anyway, he absolutely bossed the midfield and I think he had a shot from around 25-30 yards out that rattled the cross bar.  I was only about 14 at the time but thought he looked like an absolute world beater.  Never saw him again.  :(

I saw Adam Smith's name mentioned by the OP.  He is currently rebuilding his career at Northampton.  My father-in-law is a big Cobblers fan, he reckons that Smith is one of the best keepers around.  He regularly puts in man of the match performances and is clearly destined for bigger and better things.  They cannot believe they managed to get such a quality player and are enjoying watching him while they can.

Michael Ball

Matt Mills (scoring quite a few for Forest)

Martyn Waghorn (found his league in a scrappy Scottish Championship)

Jack Hobbs

Waghorn - the excitement when he signed was unreal. I swear it broke foxes talk most visitors online? All downhill from there on wards.

Hobbs - Many believe he would play for England.

Kramaric - Thought this guy was going to be banging in 20 goals a season with ease, you would of thought so as well with him costing £10M and Chelsea wanting him.

Beckford - Thought he was gonna be quality, despite his attitude and laziness on the pitch. His scoring record was actually decent. Imagine if he had the same attitude of Vardy.

Wood - 2 goals on his debut, thought we had an absolute bargain at 2.5 mill. Shame it gradually went downhill from there.

Moore - Something must of went wrong with him, starting in the first team last season and now cannot get a game at Bristol City. Strange.

Sam McMahon, remember he scored a goal against Port Vale in a 1-1 draw in 95/96, but never really made the breakthrough. Probably best known as a tidy, competent non league midfielder, played for King's Lynn for a number of years.

Stuart Wilson was another who I hoped would have a good future but like McMahon, flew down the leagues, When he signed for Grantham I was so excited!

Everyone seems to have misread my post! It says came through  the ranks! Not players we brought and flopped!

In that case, Julian Joachim. He never realised his potential in my book and had all the talent in the world. One of the few players who got me out of my seat when he had the ball. Could have been a contender....

Am i the only one that doesn't know the difference between Steff Oakes and Scott Oakes?

One had ginger hair I think or bleached blonde. I think Steff was more of a regular than Scott, he scored a really good goal at White Hart Lane when we lost 2-1 in the relegation season of 01/02.

I'm trying to keep track on who has and hasn't been mentioned. I haven't spotted (but probably should have) Allan Sheehan, Stuart Campbell, Jordan Stewart, Tommy Goodwin, Jon Ashton, Martin Reeves, Jon Stevenson, Danny Thomas, Neil Lewis, Steve Holden, Ian Barraclough, Jason Peake, Gary Fitzpatrick, Lawrie Dudfield, Rob Kelly; I remember a short-lived flurry of anticipation when all of them made their debuts, except for Barraclough and Kelly, as I'm too young. For once.

If we're extending it to other young players we signed and who promised a lot but delivered little, then Ashley Ward, Gareth Williams, Stephen Hughes, Joe Hammill, Nicholas Priet, Peter Canero, Matt Jones, Mark Blake, Richard Cresswell and Alan Rogers have to be up there. As for players who did alright with us as young pros but bombed later, Kerrea Gilbert, Jay Spearing and Steve Corica spring to mind. You could argue Kermorgant, Mark Bright, Chris O'Grady all did the exact opposite. Hmm. Apart from O'Grady, perhaps.

Posted

Chris O'Grady. We were shite when he came through but I actually thought he had something about him.

Joe Mattock. Shame really cos I liked him despite his billy big bollocks attitude at times.

Posted

Jacques Maghoma who's now a regular for Brum. Didn't he come through the ranks here?

And that defender who was huge at 15 years of age with videos from the U17-18s showing how he bossed it... N'goma or some such foreign sounding name?

Billy McKay was here around the same time as Billy Kee, I think. Has made a decent career in Scotland.

Wes Brown?

Had a mare there. Haha Wayne Brown! Was that his name? I think it was.. I don't know what I was thinking when I wrote that!

Posted

Anyone mention Matt Heath? Slowest defender ever to play for us. He's now playing for Tadcaster Albion.
