They Promised so much.

He did nothing right either. Much like Mattock he was young and had come through the youth set up so was hyped up , but in reality he was and is rubbish.

Stearman wasn't rubbish. He was a steady player for us; definitely good enough during those horrific years. Ok he wasn't great but he certainly wasn't rubbish. Stearman played over 100 times for the club, he certainly didn't "promise so much" and let us down. Nah not having it.

Likewise Mattock. I liked him and rated him like most most fans (and don't lie because most people did at the time). He played for England under 19's at the time. He ruined his career by leaving but there was no doubt he was, again, a decent player while he was here.

The thing is with young players like Mattock and Stearman, they were standing out as better players than most of our seniors.

We all thought this must mean they are going to go on to greatness when in fact it was because our seniors were actually shit :(

Stearman was better than us at the time. He went to play in the Premier League whilst we were slugging it out in L1 and Championship.

Mattock just bottled it. Went to West Brom and was never good enough. Had he stayed with us like King he might be still playing with us. King developed. Mattock could have done so too.

I thought Chris O'Grady has something about him. He came through when we were utter shite so but felt there was something there. But he found his level I guess.

Had a mare there. Haha Wayne Brown! Was that his name? I think it was.. I don't know what I was thinking when I wrote that!

I thought perhaps you knew more than you were letting on. Like he used to go into the away dressing room and steal from there too!

Eric Odhiambo - scored for fun in the reserves and youth levels and then faded away

If we can talk about signed players (for a minute) - John Curtis, one of the original FM legends. Young, from Man U and could play anywhere across the back. Future England captain. Came here, terrible!

Mark Davis looked a world beater when we had him on loan for a while. Went to Bolton and injuries too their toll.

Kerry Gilbert was an ever present in League One and his career completely dropped off, last I heard he was a personal trainer now?

Kyle Naughton looked world class, ended up overshadowed by Kyle Walker and Spurs but has found his feet again this season at Swansea it seems.

Stockdale the keeper looked good for the short time we had him, so did Mark Bunn, again both making fleeting Premier League appearances since.

Will never forget when he dribbled by the whole of Yeovil's team. Thought we had a future england player with us back then.

Stefan Oakes, despite looking a bit like Lord Percy from Blackadder and being a bit well, feeble, he looked like he might make it as a player - had an ok career but not at the level I hoped

I'm trying to keep track on who has and hasn't been mentioned. I haven't spotted (but probably should have) Allan Sheehan, Stuart Campbell, Jordan Stewart, Tommy Goodwin, Jon Ashton, Martin Reeves, Jon Stevenson, Danny Thomas, Neil Lewis, Steve Holden, Ian Barraclough, Jason Peake, Gary Fitzpatrick, Lawrie Dudfield, Rob Kelly; I remember a short-lived flurry of anticipation when all of them made their debuts, except for Barraclough and Kelly, as I'm too young. For once.

If we're extending it to other young players we signed and who promised a lot but delivered little, then Ashley Ward, Gareth Williams, Stephen Hughes, Joe Hammill, Nicholas Priet, Peter Canero, Matt Jones, Mark Blake, Richard Cresswell and Alan Rogers have to be up there. As for players who did alright with us as young pros but bombed later, Kerrea Gilbert, Jay Spearing and Steve Corica spring to mind. You could argue Kermorgant, Mark Bright, Chris O'Grady all did the exact opposite. Hmm. Apart from O'Grady, perhaps.

Peter Canero  was a good player. Cant argue with the rest. Stevenson just signed for Rushden an Diamonds

He didn't even promise anything.

Indeed this seems to, predictably, turned into a thread of just naming shit players as opposed to naming ones with any potential. I mean I've seen Alan Rogers' name somewhere, he never promised anything apart from being a toss ex Forest waste of space.

Correct the post was about naming players who "came through the ranks!" ans people are naming all sort of rubbish we signed!

Been playing CM2, I remember much of the squad from 96/97 - there's one player, Craig Hallam, who is rated in the game and is listed as a LCFC youth product (doesn't mean much, I know) but I can't recall ever seeing him in a city shirt. Anyone recall?

EDIT: Yeah, it kinda was an excuse to reminisce about this squad too.

He never played for the first team. I remember watching Justin Harrington banging a few goals in for the reserves. There was talk at the time that he would be given a first team chance although that never materialised either.
