why presume he's given them the go ahead? Agents are the scum of football and do all they can to get more money for themselves. That includes upping players wages and manufacturing moves away.

Are you serious ?  How naive . Are you really saying his agents would go around the big clubs touting his services without him knowing ? don't be so daft lad.

Forgive me if my understanding is naive or basic but are we going to be able to pay a transfer fee and then wages for a player who will score 20+ goals next season (or is at least capable of that) for less than £24m?

Arsenals offer reportedly equates to a total of £24m over four years.

If the answer to my question above is no then we should match Arsenal's offer. Why wouldn't we if we couldn't afford the alternative which is to find someone of similar quality, or if it was going to cost more than £24m to do so. Is this not just a case of simple mathematics?

Someone was always going to activate his clause. The whole thing rests on a single decision now.

He either doubles his money at Arsenal or doubles his money with us, he will be delighted. Our board needs to decide his value, and if it's sustainable to offer him over £100k for 4 years. If it isn't he should go. The long term sustainability of the club is far bigger than one player, regardless of who it is.

If we need to buy a new striker, leading the line in the Champions league will be a HUGE pull for Europes up and coming best young strikers. We can take advantage of our success.

At first I thought this move made little sense. Vardy's 29, a guaranteed starter at a club which is set up to suit his style of play. Also, it's very unlike Arsene to throw £20m at a player approaching 30, he's lost Pires amongst others in the past for refusing to offer anything other than a one year contract to players over 30.

However there are many reasons why this makes perfect sense:

- Vardy is 29 and his stock is as high as it'll ever be. This summer is probably his last chance to get a move with a 4 year contract with a top club.

- Arsene's deal is up next year, he has been offered a new deal but is yet to sign. Perhaps this change in tactic is him wanting short term success before he leaves, similar to Van Persie and Fergie.

- Vardy doesn't suit Arsenal's style of play, especially given how the opposition usually stick 10 behind the ball. However in Mesut Özil there's the most creative footballer in European football, there has to be a chance Vardy could replicate his goal scoring feats from this seasons with that kind of service.

- Finally, I am right in reading the new Mrs Vardy was pushing her ex into the boardroom every week to ask for a pay rise. I think she'd quite like the London lifestyle.

The deal does make sense but I'd be very whelmed given the links to Morata et al.

Spot on this! It's agents seeing pound signs for themselves!! Vardy doesn't need to give his representatives the go ahead. They will tout him around all the club's and then contact vardy saying I can get you this from so and so club.

Thinking if I can get him this I will get a percentage. Then leak it to the press.

Don't get me wrong vardy may know about it and gave the go ahead but I'm seeing so much shite given to vardy by our so called loyal supporters. Nobody knows if he has asked for this!!

BBC, Sky, some c*nt on twitter . None of these outlets know anything. BBC are just reporting what they see.

Even in Sky's report they started the story saying.. 'SOCIAL MEDIA' is blowing up about Arsenal in talks with Vardy. They didn't even have their own source. So all of this has come from some journo on twitter lol Lol lol Lol

Genuinely hope you're right!

There was a big reason his agent insisted on £20m clause. The fact vardy has been touted to the so called bigger clubs is because he wants to move.

If it was just being used as a bargaining tool it wouldn't be so publicised, it would have been done in private. The fact it also looks to be completed in a few days also shows agents have been discussing terms of the contract for sometime.

Vardy will be gone and it will be because he wants to leave.

From all our big nes I thought he would be the last one to behave like this...

remember when Mahrez was offered to Marseille? he reportedly didn't know anything about that, it does happen

I just don't understand why we put the clause in regardless of if they wanted it put in or not!! I'm sure he signed a contract the beginning of the season so he obviously still had plenty of time left on it!

I'm sure we were giving him the new contract with increased wages as a reward for his performances and to reflect his international status.... If he refused to sign we should have just left him on his lower wage along with no release clause

Some of the comments in this thread are fvcking pathetic. I wont be wishing Vards any luck if he does go to Arsenal, but he is and always will be a Leicester legend.

Anyone taking digs at him/his Mrs - hang your heads in shame.

You don't know much about agents do you

I think it's the new in thing with agents now and probably a good bargaining tool.

If player is doing well - forces club to sign a new contract to review terms.

Player isn't happy - reasonable fee that a club can't hold player at ransom - WBA situation with Berahinho.

unfortunately it puts the dirty agents in prime position to do what they want.

My heart says keep him of course, but I think if I were on the board I would probably let him go. For his age I think Arsenal are a little mad to offer him a rumoured 4 year deal on £100k+. With his attributes, let's face it without his pace he isn't half the player; he could be one ligament injury away from seriously reducing his effectiveness. It's a big risk, considering he is also sure to lose pace with age. I was hoping we would get 2 more years out of him, but if we can replace with a top young striker then so be it.

They (player and agent) insisted on the clause. It was the clubs goodwill towards the player after such a great season they agreed to it.

To be fair, vardy deserves the right to move on and earn double his money if he wants to. Careers are short and his jump to the big league has come relatively late in his career. With potentially only 2-3 years left at the top he should earn as much as he can while he can.

Can't really blame him or kante or mahrez if they got offered the same.

What a backwards step this would be competing for 4th spot every year.

Leicester to Arsenal isn't a backwards step, let's not be silly.

I can understand why people get worried about the prospect of Vardy moving on but lets instead just wish him well. He is only one injury away from ending his career so if he can get £23mn out of a club like Arsenal then he would have to be wedded to Leicester City to stay. For the owners, Vardy is at his peak price tag, £20mn for a striker with one good top season behind him and hitting 30 in six months time is good business, he will be worth nothing in 3 years time.

Its good business for Arsenal because it neuters an opponent, its good for Vardy because it'd set him up for life and he can say I played for the Gooners and its good business for Leicester City. Lets not forget, in the two league games Vardy was missing last season the team scored 5 goals.
