Collymore Posted 8 August 2016 Posted 8 August 2016 Was having an argument with someone on a train few weeks a go about how fast we were travelling. At the time we had kind of slowed down a bit and I said we were still doing 80mph and he said 30mph! Of course I was right but I couldn't get my speedo app to work on the metal tubular Faraday like cage. Anyway on the way down to London I got it to work and we hit 137mph and I kind of felt it had a little left in it's tank. That 8pm train back to Rugby was unbelievable too? Took about 50 minutes. I think train technology is coming on - rarely use them anymore, just find it interesting like...
Izzy Posted 9 August 2016 Posted 9 August 2016 Trains are quicker than cars I reckon. Definitely quicker than running or biking. Some trains in France and Japan go well quick - like 150mph apparently. "Let the train take the strain" I say....
leicsmac Posted 9 August 2016 Posted 9 August 2016 Come to Korea, go from Seoul to Busan in 2 hours on the KTX at around 190mph. UK train tech still has a long way to go to even catch up, which is a shame.
Nick Posted 9 August 2016 Posted 9 August 2016 If a maths teacher takes a female 15 year old student to France on a train averaging 98 miles per hour, how many years does he get in prison ?
Beliall Posted 9 August 2016 Posted 9 August 2016 Most of the lines in the country are limited to 125mph. there's a small section that is 140mph (High speed 1) down to the channel tunnel. those trains only use that line, if you were on the way down to London, from Leicester ( I assume) then you cant have been going more than 125mph, to my limited knowledge. certainly more than 30mph though. Now, where's my weak lemon drink, I'm thirsty
Fox92 Posted 9 August 2016 Posted 9 August 2016 On the mainline there you'll be doing 125mph. They can reach top speed of 140mph but that's only Southeastern line - as Beliall said above that must be for the Euro Tunnel. Trains do slow down through stations - especially if there's only two lines - but even still it'll be faster than 30mph. Of course they have signals to adhere too also, just like we do with traffic lights. I love trains man, always have and always will.

Wymsey Posted 9 August 2016 Posted 9 August 2016 Don't know but train toilet locks need to be more effective. Activated the lock button but whilst having a pee some knob opened the door and pointed towards my privates around fellow pisted people hanging about in corridor.

That's what happens when you leave 1st class and mix with the riff-raff.

I'm sure the main line through Leicester to London is 130 max, the train can probally go faster but it's down to the line it's running on, I think the ksl line is a max speed of 130mph could be wrong though

It achieved around 125mph and this was on the East Coast Mainline. Sir Nigel Gresley - what a hero.
Christoph Posted 11 August 2016 Posted 11 August 2016 I find the delays and switching between trains help negate the extra speed. Cannot stand trains. Overpriced and awful when you have a transfer but about 5 minutes to find the train because your train was a bit late. Never taking a train to Wales again
boots60 Posted 11 August 2016 Posted 11 August 2016 I think train drivers are brilliant! How they manage to keep all the carriages on them rails for miles on end is nothing short of amazing! Tube drivers are even better as they have to do it in the dark!

separator Posted 11 August 2016 Posted 11 August 2016 the future of high speed train travel in the UK is being tested in Leicestershire. The Intercity 125 replacement, class 800 trains, have been running on the Old Dalby test track...

Midland Mainline needs electrifying now.
