New Social Media Thread

Recommended Posts

Posted

Okay, so I began to think the other day that with the breadth of demographic that frequent these boards we could have a thread to keep abreast of all things new.

Whilst we all plod along in the world there are some of us who use social media for leisure and others for business purposes and I admittedly am on the verge of being a tad out of touch with things. I'm told Facebook is dying, Google have other things in the pipeline, Snapchat and Instagram are mosying along etc.. but in this age of live broadcasting and innovative new tech, I wanted a thread to help me and others evaluate new electronic media platforms as they arise, whether it be for business or leisure uses.

Im interested to discuss and share what's new and what business' and cool kids are up to.

If posters could give an explanation of the technology and how they or it might be used as an intro this would help us 'old stick in the muds' and offer contemporary sharing of new innovations.

Over to you cool, 'down with the kids' and new media types!

Great news I have 2,000 singles on vinyl. Apparently my gatefold cover vinyl copy of War of the Worlds is worth £100.

Twitter et al can go **** themselves. Facebook is the devils work. I don't know any of the people they suggest I should be friends with. Very disconcerting when they suggest I add my daughter's 16 yr old friends.

Too old to care, Sorry swan.

Well I signed up for a Youtube beta test , basically it lets you test YT newest features and leave a feedback about 'em and one of the many features YT is adding in the next few months is a Social media like tab

it let's you share your thoughts and pictures alongside short videos with your subscribers all that without influencing your channel or your content on the channel

I have to say , I'm usually the kind of guy that says , Youtube should stay Youtube a video website , but after testing some of the features i have to say it's not quite bad

meanwhile facebook is now allowing the monetization of videos , so Youtube is becoming facebook and facebook is becoming a cancerous version of Youtube

The most underrated of all Social Networks i think it's Google+ while I'm not a big fan of google's social network , I have to say it is the most balanced one

people can be separated in groups (Circles) it can go from clients to close friends there are unlimited circles

it is more secure and well organized (Once you get used to it)

plus it has one Major thing that makes it better than FB and it's the report system , on facebook anyone can abuse the report system , so if you can get 10 - 12 angry people and make them all report an account , facebook will close it no matter what

and people have been abusing that for the past 2 years now , add that to fb's new policy of

"YOU HAVE TO USE YOUR REAL NAME AND INFO OR ELSE WE WILL CLOSE YOUR ACCOUNT"

and you have the reasons why I like G+ better

I have to say if not for the reason that everyone I know is using facebook , I would've moved to Google+ a long while ago

These type of threads make me feel old. I've only just sussed out Facebook and now you're telling me Facebook is dying!

I'm an avid Whatsapp user.

You can engage in group discussion which is tailored to the members of the group you have invited.

I have a group with my family, another with the wife's family, one with my closest few school friends, another that's just me and the missus, and so on.

Your (sigh) "content" is only seen by the people you want to interact with, not by some lad you went to primary school with, or a work colleague, or the mother in law.

You can see when someone has received and read your message.

You are not bombarded with motivational posters for menopausal women, or memes by religious/atheist/political obsessives.(Always a shocker to see on Facebook someone you went to school with, who was as quiet as a mouse, sharing Britain First memes).

You aren't (yet) bothered by advertising, or (like Facebook does) loads of transparently false suggestions that so and so "likes" X product - as if my brother "liked" a supermarket or an insurance product. All he does on Facebook is take the piss.lol

I hardly ever use Facebook these days. I have deleted as much from my FB profile as I was able to,  and I do most of my interaction with remotely based friends and family (and the missus, instead of texting) via Whatsapp.

I also tried Ello as a new social media, but didn't get on with it and stopped using it. I now regret giving them my email address, as they bombard me with spam.

Anybody use 'linked in' for business - strikes me that its been around for a while and its used quite heavily in the corporate world.

I joined a few years ago but because of the nature of my work I got up to 20 emails sometimes per day of people trying to get me to endorse, contribute or subscribe to their products.... so I left.

I hear it also takes time to build up a good linked in profile as its not your mates you want on it, its being associated with key business players.

I'm unsure whether to bother starting or not and if there are different players emerging...

Now LinkedIn is the one thing I do use on a regular basis. I guess I don't class it as 'social' media, as for me it's strictly for business. It must be around 2008 when I joined it and I've got about 2000 contacts so my profile is pretty good.

There are so many e-mail options and I've opted out of most of them, so probably receive one a day max which is manageable. And I only get the updates I want from the people I want so it's quite useful in that respect.

I can see why people want loads of Facebook friends and Twitter followers, but for me I'd rather have LinkedIn contacts instead as it's a good way of keeping in touch with old clients, prospects and business associates.

I'm sure LinkedIn will eventually die of death, but for the time being I'll stick with it

Yeah I've got LinkedIn... I get emails but whenever someone endorse me etc like you say but that is about twice a month. I guess it depends on number of connections and I've only got 80. I've had it for two years now and my profile is still not 100% apparently, and as I say I've less than 100 connections. It's not about adding anybody really.

Whenever I log in - which is about once a week - I always get an inbox/private message from someone asking me to get LinkedIn premium. That's annoying.

It's good for what is is and I signed up for a profile when I was finishing my degree and looking for opportunities. I imagine when I have vast experience and don't need it to look for jobs anymore I might consider getting rid.

What do everyone think of the latest fad- mannequin challenge?  For now, I do not mind it too much especially that it is much better than recent fads but I am sure it will get annoying soon enough.  The only bugbear I have with it is that some of attempts highlight our obsession with phones.

For those who have not heard of the challenge yet.

^ I really don't think I should be anywhere near a bunch of bikini clad females pretending to be frozen in time.

At least until the current "misunderstanding" incident is dropped by the police.
