If we switch back to 4-4-2

In his post-match interview yesterday Ranieri basically told the rest of the division how we're going to play from now on - ie, using the formation that has been failing so badly for much of the season. They must be licking their lips. The 4-4-2 worked so well last season because we had Kante in midfield. He did the work of two men, effectively giving us a three-man central midfield, plus two wingers and two strikers. This was a major factor in our title win. Without Kante it simply hasn't worked as well. Unless one of Amartey, Ndidi or Mendy can somehow replicate Kante's energy and work rate, we'll just go back to getting overrun in midfield and losing games as a result. Ranieri's suggestion that the players are incapable of playing any other formation is deeply, deeply worrying.

The problems are so much bigger than Kante going and have been from day one. Burnley play 442 and currently perform at a much higher level than us. Mainly down to the fact they are motivated players giving everything.

Our tackle starts are down all over the pitch, alarmingly so in some cases. Kante being there or not shouldn't suddenly make someone else capable of tackling and then not being able to this season. Lack of effort and commitment can though.

We somehow need to get this lot motivated.

Whatever formation we play, we are lacking the fitness, effort, tenacity, aggression and pressing to be successful. Sort them problems out and 4-4-1-1 is back on the menu. We need to start playing at 100miles per hour again.

If we can get a couple new defenders and a CAM, and I would be willing for us to give this a try again IF everyone decides to start trying again.

I liked the front 4 vs West Ham.

Albrighton Mahrez Gray/Musa

                 Slimani

He said 4-4-2/4-2-3-1 so I'd hope we'd revert to the system and team we played against West Ham. Think we looked reasonably solid but also dangerous in that shape.

Mahrez in behind Slimani with Gray and Albrighton out wide. Another option in midfield now with Ndidi.

I think (hope) the days of Vardy and Okazaki up top are over

I was complaining about 442 earlier in the season but that's because we were going away to the big boys and being far too exposed.

442 should still be good enough against the rest.

turned the tv off at full time so didnt listen to ranieri but if he really does think we cant play anything other than 442 surely it implies he isnt up to the job of being our manager??

We lost to the following teams playing 442

Hull

Liverpool

Manchester United

Chelsea

West Brom

Watford

Sunderland

Bournemouth

We did beat Palace, Burnley, Man City and got a point away to Tottenham and home to Arsenal playing 442.

Maybe it's deeper than formations.

We'll get a CB and No10 between now and end of window.

Schmeichel

Simpson

Huth

New CB

Chilwell

Ndidi

Drinkwater

Mahrez

New No10

Gray/Musa/Albrighton

Slimani

In certain games against "the big boys" we can sacrifice one of the 3 and put Mendy/Amartey in.

He's a joke

442 hasn't worked for most of season

We need to be hard to beat, we're very easy to play against.

The players aren't playing for mgr, no one is 'bang at it', or even 'at it'.

Formation is irrelevant if you're mentality isn't there.

He's lost the players and I'll predict he'll lose most of the fans too if we roll over at Derby

We need to be 451 away from home with Ulloa or Slimani up to for 60mins before switching to Vardy/Musa

At home we can play 4411 (the 2 hasn't worked)

Maybe it was 442 and lack of application from the players. No concentration or motivation.

To concede thirty secs in at Watford,  four to Man Utd in mins mainly all from set pieces, as well as all the stupid mistakes and errors in other games.

That's all not to do with formation but with players.

I think players need reading the riot act to be honest

The thing is we have no proper cam if we had 1 i would play drinkwater and nididi behind the cam with gray marhez has wingers with slimani up top then bring vardy on last 30/20 mins

The bottom line is we don't win the 'second ball' enough.

Theres a bigger problem but the two formations fielded in the last two games have assisted the opposition.

Spot on for me

To me it's more than just the formation. It's the lack of application by the players on the field that is most worrying. Yes it's true that without Kante we are weaker in the middle. Any team to lose such a play is bound to but if you don't work hard enough, you will ultimately get beaten.

We are / were a team built on hard work. What worries me is that with 3 men in the midfield, we are still getting beaten through the middle so easy and that's down to a lack of pressing and fighting.

It's pretty simple really. You should play to your strengths. Unfortunately for us, the players are not playing to their strengths so as a complete unit we are ****ED.

Agree. Defending crosses is a good example. Kante did nothing to help us defend crosses but last season we could deal with them all day long. This season we look like conceding from almost every cross. It's got nothing to do with kante or formations, it's because our defence as a unit and as individuals has declined dramatically.

We don't need Kante but we do need someone who does the defensive job of Kante i.e. winning the ball back aggressively. That's crucial to the way we play, regardless of formation.

If we don't win the ball back in central positions we will find it very, very difficult to get up the pitch.

IF neither N'didi or Mendy can fill that void as individuals then you have to ask why we bothered signing them. That must be their job description.

Failing that, I don't think 4-3-3 suits our players. The other option is 3-5-2, allowing us width and solidity in the centre.

But, frankly, even based on evidence from this season, we're still capable of playing some good stuff with 4-4-2. But the players do not have the desire for us to do so.

Basically this.

We've stopped pressing from the front, we're leaving acres of space in front of the defence and the unadventurous full backs who stayed back but made sure the flanks were covered now neither go forward nor defend well. Our centre halves mopped up crosses for fun last season because we maintained our shape extraordinarily well and opposition found it difficult to really test us except from the odd bit of confusion from set pieces and if we'd got a bit too eager in our counter attacks. The 2nd half of last season we had that perfect blend of patience and resilience which we knew when to pounce when teams were getting frustrated with us. Everything is all over the shop this season and where work ethic and unity got us success, that is gone now and our lack of creativity and talent is very telling.

We need a formation that lets us keep possession. Last season we thrived on not having possession, absorbing pressure and scoring on  the counter.

This season, our defence is hopeless, if we get the ball we hoof it upfield and await for the inevitable. We have signed these Midfielders and play 3 in the middle and still hoof it up. It's ridiculous.

But that doesn't mean possession is the answer, that means we need to get back to the basics which made us successful. But we can't do that unless the players are willing to work hard.

I repeat what I have said many times, trying to play possession football is mental with the players we have. No formation will turn Simpson, Morgan, Huth, Okazaki, Slimani, Mendy, Amartey, Musa or Ulloa into good passers of the ball.

what we must do is not try to play better footballing teams at their own game. It's retarded. We need to get back to swashbuckling, high pressing, high tempo, quick breaking game that made us successful.

Bur that requires both hard work and the ability to recover the ball quickly. We have neither of those at the minute.
