Is it time to rebuild the Team?

Recommended Posts

Recruitment has to include 2 new defenders, two new midfielders. We are not short of strikers, its simply a matter of quality. All I ask of Grey is that he hits the target and tests keepers. Captain Morgan ought to bow out gracefully at the end of the season.

Any other time in our history after such a set of poor performances I'd be calling for some serious change in the playing staff, what scares me about a total rebuild now is the quality of the recent signings in contrast to fees spent on them and that the person who is behind them would be in charge of it.

Not to mention the Champions League still, I retain some (probably delusional) hope that as soon as that comes around they'll all click and be right back to their best as the motivation kicks in.

if we are going to completely rebuild the team which will take a hell of a lot of millions and trying to get players who are on good contracts out of the club then it has to be with a new manager and not Claudio i am afraid. his track record on recruitment is not looking good and if he stays to rebuild the team it will just be more of the same.i am not saying i want Claudio gone all i am saying is if we do completely rebuild then it needs to be with a manager with a fresh perspective as well as a replacement for Rudkin

The question is not if we can rebuild the team. The question is "could we". I think the club giving a long contracts to old players will come back to bite us hard.

When it comes to Football, often I'm really stupid, so forgive me when I ask, isn't that what we're doing?

Most of the defence. Simpson, Huth, Wasyl and Morgan need replacing now or in the Summer. Bothers me so many of our current under-performers will be here for 3-4 years on good wages nobody else would pay.

Think our midfield is mostly decent. Strikers I'm unsure about because we're so bad at getting the ball to them. Okazaki and Ulloa probably don't make the cut anymore though.

For next season:

A RB and at least another CB to help make a back 4 with Chilwell

A CM

Personally think its the main cause of our problems.

Can argue our wingers and strikers are good enough with the correct support and setup.

They've had the group stages and got through it but in truth i don't think we were impressive, nothing like last season's style. We've been shit all season, and i don't see the current management team & playing staff turning that around simply when the Saville game comes around.

The summer was an absolute nightmare. Lack of recruitment and giving these players large contracts.

It is now the 24th, we still haven't signed a CB which we lack so much.

Can't believe we gave the likes of Morgan,Simpson and Fuchs new long contracts. Knew it would bite us in the arse soon as I saw it.

(1st choice/backup)

Schmeichel/New GK

New RB/Simpson

Amartey/Huth

New CB/Morgan

Chilwell/Fuchs

Mahrez/Albrighton

Gray/Musa/Kaputska

Ndidi/Mendy

Drinkwater/King/James

Slimani/Vardy

New No10/Okazaki

Add to that 2/3 squad players - currently Ulloa, Hernandez, Benny, and we've got the making of a good young side/squad.

We have an ageing team.  This summer should see the beginning of a major overhaul starting with the defence and then moving to some creative players and younger strikers.

The sensible thing to do would be to also get a young, hungry manager.  It needs to be a long term project and I believe it would be counter productive to allow Ranieri to spend big money to begin the rebuilding process only to leave 12 months later.  Let a new guy come in with a 4-5 year contract and give him time to build something with a view to success (however you measure it) in years 3-5.

I read that the first thing Bob Paisley said to his Liverpool squad at the start of a new season was " if any of you are fed up of winning trophies then let me know now  as i will find some new ones who are not"...think we were caught by surprise, not used to handling success probably assumed that all the players would just continue as per last season

I agree with this.  Tom Lawrence looks like he could be on the bench at least for some of next season too.

On another note, I don't get the received wisdom of some that (a) our recruitment has been terrible and (b) Claudio is responsible.  My understanding is that many of the new signings are longer term targets, pursued over a fair while and many with the approval of the sainted Steve Walsh (He Who Must Not Be Criticised).  Clearly Hernandez did not work out.  Ndidi looks excellent.   Mendy could be a good player for us, even if not a regular in the starting XI.  Slimani will score plenty for us (I had a long chat last week with a devoted Sporting Lisbon fan from Portugal who just raved about him).  Musa has shown flashes, but certainly needs to adapt.   Kaputska- I've no bleedin' idea to be fair.

Everyone calling for CR to be sacked and wholesale changes should just be a little careful what they wish for.

If we stay up, CR stays for me.

Really? Grey, Amartey, Ndidi, Mendy, Chilwell, Mahrez, all 25 or under, Drinkwater 26, Slimani and Albrighton 27 and all featuring regularly in the first team.

I'd argue we need some experience.

Spot on..But experience which still have Legs.We need CBs with quality.

I actually believe, those players the previous poster mentioned, could form a good team.

Is it just me who thinks we 'missed a trick' in the summer by not signing Keane and if reports are true they only wanted an extra  £2 million for him to be ours?

Honestly I had massive hopes this summer, reigning champions of England let's go out build on it we had a massive chance to become a regular top 6 possibly even top 4 club.  No, no I'm not dreaming. The foundations were there possibly still are. Anyway.

Why not of invested for the future? Seriously? Keane, Gibson, Holding, Ifora, Tammy Abraham, Jordan Pickford. We could of gone for those type of players. Show the ambition and be rewarded.

We supposedly had private jets and helicopters on standby for Adrian Silva too, why didn't  we push that little bit harder? Slimani is and he will eventually show what an excellent choice it was for him to sign him. I even think the same about Musa...
