Al-aLondon-Foxile Posted 14 March 2017 Posted 14 March 2017 Maybe the FA cups finals of the 60's would have been bigger, i certainly think the play-off finals are bigger as the reward is massive compared to the ECL last 8. But this is huge.
ceredigion Posted 14 March 2017 Posted 14 March 2017 I think this is our biggest game ever. In fact I would go as far as to say that it's an even bigger game than the 1992 Northern Area Quarter Final match against Notts County, and I never thought I'd say that.
Bobby Hundreds Posted 14 March 2017 Posted 14 March 2017 Not a chance, a number of league games towards the end of last season were much bigger. It's incredibly exciting however.
Tommeh Posted 14 March 2017 Posted 14 March 2017 Level with the United away game and probably Swansea at home last season as our biggest ever for me no question. Re. All the play-off finals, promotion/relegation deciders, even cup finals. We are in a league system every year, promotion's happen, relegation's happen, we've gone down, we've bounced back again. Nothing bar winning the PL last season will we never see again. Same with tonight. We may mix it with these lot in Europe again someday, but we probably won't. Once in a lifetime.
the_tank Posted 14 March 2017 Posted 14 March 2017 It depends if we win..in which case it won't be our biggest for long. As a one off knock out game in the last 16 of world's top club competition it has to be right up there..

We got the world wide attention last year for winning the league, getting to the last 8 will enhance our reputation i guess, but without too much substance as we won't be back next season unless we win it. It's one of those that you just can't answer, a bit like saying who is/isn't a legend, it's all about opinion. As a one off game, the rewards being reputation, club status, appeal to other players, envy of rival fans, i'd say it's difficult to choose between winning promotion to the premier league via the PO's or winning through to the last 8 of the ECL. At this point i'd take the later
Gerard Posted 14 March 2017 Posted 14 March 2017 Just to remind everyone of the Swansea game last season, we had had Vardy out for that game and it was proper squeaky bum time. If we lost that and Tottenham won their game in hand we would have been two points clear with a much inferior goal difference and with these three fixtures left: Man Utd (a) Everton (h) Chelsea (a) Remember up until that point Tottenham were like a machine destroying everything in front of them. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/36065530 I literally had sleepless nights before Swansea but slept like a baby last night and I'm still not nervous about the game tonight. It just has a feel of the reward is another chance of a European away day rather than a step closer to winning it.
Finnaldo Posted 14 March 2017 Posted 14 March 2017 Tommeh's right. I can't understand domestic cup and play-off finals, we've been in several finals over our history and compete in it every year, we'd probably do well if we gave it a go. In terms of play-off finals, Blackpool won the Championship play-offs in the not-too-distant past for god's sake, it a second division achievement!! Even though I'd take the Premier League title every day of the week over a possible Champion's League quarter final, the fact is that this is still a step above domestic football, this is an elite European title and we have a chance, an uphill one but still a good shot, of being one of the last English teams in it and reaching the Quarter Finals of such a competition would be a massive statement if we kick on after this season. Ultimately, in terms of importance, several games last season could be in contention as our only English title win. But this, and any further rounds in the CL, will be one of the most prestigious games we'll likely ever see our club participate in. It's more the class and prestige than importance.

Can't wait
Guest Col city fan Posted 14 March 2017 Posted 14 March 2017 Tonight is a MASSIVE game. Not only because I've bet some money on us to go through, but also because, if we lose, I might be knocked down from my lofty position on the Superbru Champions League predictor. Shudder..... What I don't want is to give @Swan Lesta or @Renart, any ammo to start taking the piss again..
foxy boxing Posted 14 March 2017 Posted 14 March 2017 It's certainly more prestigious, it's the biggest football competition in Europe with footballs elite clubs and we have a chance to get to the quarter finals. yes we have had bigger games where the outcome means more like staying up or winning at Wembley but this game is huge. we are in the same company as barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich and that would have been unheard of a few seasons ago!
Thracian Posted 14 March 2017 Posted 14 March 2017 It'll be one of the biggest anti-climaxes if we don't focus and play with the belief that won us the Premiership last season. But I'd agree with others - the FA Cup finals were special but we failed in those, and tonight we have chance to deliver and take another step towards what really could be the biggest game in our history. .
Aus Fox Posted 14 March 2017 Posted 14 March 2017 Oxford 1991 is still the biggest game in our history for me. Tony James 1-0, if we had lost we went down to the third division. We won stayed up and that was the catalyst for a lot of success there after. The Pleat times, were the worst of times, one man and his dog at Filbo. If we had lost to Oxford who knows if we'd have had all the success that was built over the next few years.
shiv Posted 14 March 2017 Posted 14 March 2017 8 years ago today, we were playing Millwall in League 1. Never thought I'd be witnessing this in my lifetime! For me definitely the biggest in our history in terms of the prestige of the competition.
murphy Posted 14 March 2017 Posted 14 March 2017 There are no expectations for the CL, it is just a bonus. Our biggest ever game IMO - Chelsea v Spurs last year.
Babylon Posted 14 March 2017 Posted 14 March 2017 Depends what you mean by biggest? Is it the most high profile, yes.... but it's nowhere near the most important game we've had.
Gerard Posted 14 March 2017 Posted 14 March 2017 Strangely enough I'm not even excited by the match yet. I think I would be if Benfica had got through as we had the potential of another winnable game but with the likely last 8 being: Barcelona Real Madrid Atletico Madrid Bayern Munich Borussia Dortmund Juventus Man City Leicester/Sevilla You could argue the point that the other seven teams are the best seven club teams in the world.

Maybe for some but I don't want us to be sacrificial lambs against Barcelona, etc, I want us to keep winning. I'm doing the lads a disservice though as we're capable of beating anyone on our day and even Barcelona lost this weekend to a team considered inferior to ours. I'm hoping for the stars to align, win the Champions League and watch the likes of Carragher and Michael Owen squirm when our "bang average" players have won a Premier League and Champions League title in successive seasons.
