Do we need to sign a new midfield player?

Have you ever seen James play?

I think Drinkwater's passing style suites us perfectly. He is very direct and prefers through balls, balls over the top and diagonal balls instead of sideways and backwards.

These passes are more high risk though, so Danny's success rate isn't as high as some midfielders but his directness goes hand in hand with how we like to play.

I agree, I don't think CM is the problem. Need a CAM and a couple of CBs... Maybe a RB

We are allowed to evolve and improve the way we play. I believe it is possible for us to retain our high-press, counter-attacking style while improving our ball retention and adding more to our creative threat through the middle. If we can find a high quality midfielder who can help us to do that, we should try to sign him. If our policy is not to sign good new players because we're scared that some of our existing players might not like it, we'll sink back into mediocrity before you know it.

For those who think CM is not an issue what make you think that any of the below are good enough to compete for the 1st team and not finish in the lower parts of the premier league? I want to be convinced but can't see it

Mendy

 Amartey

James

Lawrence

King

Too many questions/gambles for me, can carry a few gambles or journeyman in your squad but all in the same area of the pitch, nope not for me CM/AM needs looking at for sure.

I agree, Drinkwater came in for James and was great in the season that followed, last year he wasn't at that level. I know he's been carrying an injury, but who can say what we will see next season.

Ndidi looks decent so far but we have so many question marks over the rest of them?

We need more of an attacking threat from midfield, the reason the opposition get away with double/triple marking Mahrez is because they know we don't have much more of a threat.

The whole spine of the squad needs strengthening with definite starters.

Difficult one, we could get an improvement over our starters/backups easily, but that would mean shipping someone out without giving them a chance as we have far too many CMs now. Especially as it sounds like Barnes and James will both be given opportunities. Gut feeling is that we won't get one. I don't think it's a priority. I'd leave it and reassess in Jan, I suspect that's what Shakey will do too.

100% yes. An injury to either N'didi or Drinkwater and we are screwed because the rest are either total dross or crocked.

Hope James can make it back but i doubt it. Performing well at a mid table championship club on loan and ambitions for top 6 in the premier league are two very different things.

We need to stop considering playing Amartey as a midfielder, he is a center back.

We certainly should take James back as he could actually provide competition for places.

As for people saying Lawrence, I thought he was a striker/winger, not a central midfield?

Without a shadow of a doubt. I think we're okay with defensive midfielders with the likes of N'didi, Amartey, Mendy (who we haven't seen play 100% fit) as well as young prospects as backup such as Choudhury. However, other than Drinkwater, who I feel has been very inconsistent this year, we have no real creative options in midfield as King isn't good enough to be starting week in week out. I think we need to buy someone to give Drinkwater some competition to really push him if anything we can buy a creative midfielder better than Drinkwater as this season I think we've really lacked drive from midfield that we had last year as Kanté created so much space for Drinkwater.

We've been crying out for a genuine creative midfielder for years. Ndidi and Drinkwater will not provide anything like the creative threat we need from central midfield, and we don't know for certain that anybody else on the books will be able to either. Now that Mahrez is definitely leaving and our threat from out wide will be reduced no matter who takes his place, the need for creativity in central midfield is even greater. It's absolutely a priority.

Of course we'll probably play better if we signed say Adrien Silva for 35m to play alongside Ndidi.

If we sign Silva for 35m he will be playing week in week out (if he's any good). So will Ndidi as we're not going to find a better defensive midfielder. We won't play 3 in midfield.

What do we do with the rest of them?

Mendy - could easily get rid of him at a loss and saying 'sorry, tough luck with the injury on your debut, but you were a Ranieri signing and our new manager doesn't want you, we know you haven't had a chance but go away'

King/Amartey - will be happy to sit on the bench/in the stands as 6th choice, so that's fine

Barnes - could turf him out on a Championship loan even though ITKs have said he'll be involved with the first team next season so that's probably what he's expecting

The issue: What to do about Drinky and James - two very popular players among the squad? Sell? Let them know that they will be sat on the bench permanently unless Silva/Ndidi gets injured? This after Shakey has said James will be 'given every opportunity' next season?

Apparently Silva will only cost us £23m if we were to sign him this summer.

No ambiguity - I'd be wanting to sign the best attacking midfielder I can find. The rest can sort themselves out according to form, fitness and attitude.

Kingy might still be one of our best "turn to's" or "game closer's" on the bench because I can't imagine the likes of Mendy, James or Amartey fancying that kind of life or James and Lawrence either if they don't get time on the pitch if we field a midfield three of N'didi,  Drinky and any new signing.

Yes. Plus two CB's. A Two footed FB and a striker.

My Sporting mate told me that Silva will be available now (backed up by another Sporting guy who's been here recently). €25m, so £22m. Worth it at that price as long as we also get a CAM/10 to replace Okazaki (Silva isn't a huge playmaker, rather like Drinky).

2 x CB, Adrien Silva & Boudebouz...? & that's if no players leave.

Yes please (and a RB, and Ulloa replacement - that's greedy though!)
