Morgan and Huth

I thought I would start this thread as I may be alone but many seem ready to write them off and too many (maybe a few who are more vociferous) seem to be disrespectful too them imo.

They may not be the best technical centre halves to have graced a football field but they have been great for us and I believe both may yet have more juice in their legs than some believe. Morgan had his first summer rest for several years and is a fantastic leader imo.

If we look back at last season we hit our best form when they were under Shakey for that run of wins and for me we missed the pairing a lot in the last 4 or 5 games!

it goes without saying that the season before last they were immense and yes NG helped them but they were still inspirational.

i know we need alternatives as time does not stand still or players to challenge them as they are both getting older but I for one have not written them off and still believe they will play a part over the next couple of seasons.

Felt the need to put a bit of praise out their to them and I know I may get vilified by some but for me they deserve a bit of respect!

Both are club legends and both I expect to play a fair number of games next season whilst we bed in Maguire and another centre back if we sign them. Personally I have all the respect in the world for them both and I can picture a Morgan / Huth combo of Manager / Assistant Manager in a few years time!

However, they are both getting older and it's a fact that their performances dropped off considerably last season compared to the title winning year. Wes himself even came out in the press and said that he realises that entire back four are in their 30's and they will have to bring in new blood.

They showed great consistency that very few CB partnership ever did in the PL for a whole season, they did the heavy work and never complained.

They are what they are, an old fashioned PL CB partnership, it was crazy to leave them exposed without a proper DM to cover them and demand them to do a thing that they are not comfortable with (being a ball playing defenders)

I will always look back to their memories fondly and I don't mind them staying for the future.

Bed in Maguire? He cost us £17m and is premier league proven. Maguire gore straight into the side.

Finally we will have strength in depth, if we are to progress and establish ourselves as solid premier league, or go for Europe, a few of our first 11, will have to become squad players, and fight for their places.

Look at drinkwater, poor season, through to many games, or poor form, but had to play, as king was pretty much back up, when fighting relegation, RB, sigurson ( if that's how you spell it, the lad from Man City, keep what we have, strong squad

They have been good for us but they need phasing out. There is no room in football for sympathy. Clubs that win trophies season after season do not stand still - there's a time when the biggest and best of players are moved on.

We should have done this last summer but didn't.

Maguire is a good signing and we need another. If I travel down to Arsenal and we start with Huth and Morgan I'll be fuming.

We can criticize and want to replace players yet still hold the players in high regard. Starting to get fed up of these sort of threads as if criticising certain players means we don't like or respect them.

I think it's a tad churlish not to enjoy a period of our clubs history that many will not forget. Criticism is fine as they are highly paid professionals but some of the comments border on abusive - I know you were not being so but some of us actually want to enjoy the current players!

its easy if your fed up with these threads ignore it !

I for one wont be bothered one jot if we are at the Emirates and it's Huth and Morgan IF Shakey feels after preseason that they have earned their start - all about opinions.

i do agree we need to move forward to improve but good to read a number of posters that have plenty of respect for this duo which I don't think had been raised in a previous thread!

Morgan played consistently through the seasons and the whole summers seemingly without a break. Huth is just slowing a bit. But both are important very experienced players hopefully to install the right mindset into our new boys. I think they have aged prematurely with the amount pressure they have had to cope with. But, we have to say job well done fella's.

I've seen no abuse at all.

Players get phased it, it's how it works. United didn't stick with Bruce and Pallister or Vidic and Ferdinand did they. It's all about continued development.

Both have been great for the club but happy for us to replace them in the starting 11 this Summer. We cant play them until they're 50 just because of what happened 2 seasons ago.

Agree - I honestly feel the exact same way about Andy King. Both collectively and individually these two have done so, so much for the club. But they can't stay forever and we need to combat the age of some of our regular starting players by phasing them out.

When I saw the thread title I was expecting a negative type post and was ready to dive in and stick up for them both been unbelievable for us and both still quality operators (huth especially imho) their lcfc stories have not been fully written yet.

Huth especially is vital to us. Remember life before him?! I hope the plan is that we bring in youngsters to learn off him for this season and ,maybe next.

I reckon it will be Maguire and Huth as our back 2 next season.. With simmo & Fuchs at full backs and the big Dane in goal.

"Premier League proven"?!

He was a not particularly stand put player in a side who got relegated with a much worse defence than us last season.

Let me remind you Hull conceded 80 goals in 38 games last season. ****ing eighty. That's approaching 2007-08 Derby levels bad. No one associated with Hull's defence last season can be considered "Premier League proven". Not forgetting he was  only 3rd choice in their Championship season the season before.

He's clearly got potential but there's no way you can say he's provem amythimg above good Championship srandard yet and thee's absolutely no reason to expect he'll go straight into our side.

Hopefully he will grow and prove himself here but I certainly would be a bit worried if we were expecting Maguire to be first choice straight away. Huth, Morgan and Benalouane are better than him for the moment, hopefully he can improve though while they're in their twighlight years to be an excellent long term replacement.

Are you serious? Maguire is 100% starting against Arsenal if he's fit. If he wasn't any better than what we've got we wouldn't have spent £17m on him, he's 24, hardly Young.

Yes. I'm deadly serious. I think anyone who hasn't just assumed he's better because we all know opposition players are always better than out own or isn't still living off the hype he used to get as a youngster at Sheff Utd would think the same.

24 is young for a centre back tbf.

And why do you think he's better than what we've got already? He's just played in one of the worst defences in Premier League history after one season being 3rd choice centre back in the Championship and a bunch of seasons in League One and no Hull fans seemed to think he was particularly stand out even from a defence which was clearly way out of its depth at PL level.

What exactly has Maguire done to show you he's better than what we've already got or is "Premier League proven"? He's got potential ans hopefully he will be a great long-term replacement but I'd be worried about a relegation scrap if he was our first choice centre back from the start of next season.

Pickford just got relegated and will be starting for Everton next season. Maguire looks like he can defend just as good as Morgan and Huth, has the same desire to make blocks etc. But the most important thing is that he can pass and dribble and is comfortable on the ball. Huth and Morgan on the ball are not great. Having Maguire next to one of either Morgan or Huth is a better balance as at least Maguire can pass it accurately and dribble into midfield.

Could we be aiming to play 3 centre backs

Maybe if we get Evans as well.

If we don't sign another CB, then I can see Morgan and Huth rotating next to Maguire. If we get a CB, I still think they'll stay as 3rd and 4th choice. Morgan is our club captain still.

I think Maguire is a very good aquisition but he'll have to fight for his place and only Shakespeare will know when he's seen him in preseason whether he's worth a start against Arsenal. I felt a bit sorry for Huth and Morgan last year as much as they were praised by fans and pundits alike when we won the Premiership, they were criticised the next season.  Had a few weeks break suddenly aged them and turned them into ponderous non caring centre halves? I don't think so and it isn't logical either. Neither were ever blessed with pace or Maldini ball skills, they were just very good and professional at the type of defensive play they were asked to do. What had gone wrong was our midfield which for all the reasons previously discussed, didn't offer the type of play and protection to enable Huth and Morgan play to their strengths. Too often they had to try and plug gaps higher up the field which made them susceptible to quicker breaking players, it was no suprise they got caught out several times imo. It improved somewhat when Ndidi arrived but however brilliant he was,  we have to be patient with him as well. It will be interesting to see how Matty James comes back because if back to his former self,  he'll be a huge bonus. I also didn't like at times the stick Huth and Morgan got and found some of it unfair and a huge overeaction.  If Terry and Ferdinand were an ideal pairing, then hopefully Huth and Maguire can become something similar, Huth still has plenty to offer for me and Morgans attitude can't be questioned. He was well in need of a break, let's see how he comes back before we right him off.

Both Huth and Morgan are at the stage in their careers where each season will not be better than the last.  They will still have great games and yet they will have games where they struggle.  This decline may be slow or quick.... but it is a decline.  As their form dips bellow that of younger aspirants they will lose their starting places.  it's the circle of life....
