AmarteyAndChill Posted 19 June 2017 Posted 19 June 2017 8 hours ago, Sampson said: Yes. I'm deadly serious. I think anyone who hasn't just assumed he's better because we all know opposition players are always better than out own or isn't still living off the hype he used to get as a youngster at Sheff Utd would think the same. 24 is young for a centre back tbf. And why do you think he's better than what we've got already? He's just played in one of the worst defences in Premier League history after one season being 3rd choice centre back in the Championship and a bunch of seasons in League One and no Hull fans seemed to think he was particularly stand out even from a defence which was clearly way out of its depth at PL level. What exactly has Maguire done to show you he's better than what we've already got or is "Premier League proven"? He's got potential ans hopefully he will be a great long-term replacement but I'd be worried about a relegation scrap if he was our first choice centre back from the start of next season. You'd be worried about having Maguire start at CB but are fine to still have Morgan as first choice?

I've never even said anything remotely about who I was "fine" about in as first choice centre back. If we signed a *genuinely* "Premier League proven" player (like Evans for example) I would be expecting them to probably be first choice for example given that Morgan and Huth are in decline for example. But Maguire really hasn't shown anything more than potential yet and I absolutely would be worried if a player who's only first choice regular season above League One level has been part of one of the worst defences in PL history who shipped over 2 goals a game and were clearly miles out their depth is first choice come August. Of course he could prove me wrong and be amazing but I just don't see the reason why he would be expected to instantly go into the side against Arsenal - he simply hasn't proven he's good enough to replace Huth or Morgan yet. I would imagine he'll be 3rd choice atm and Shakespeare will begin to decide during pre-season and the first few games of the season whether he is good enough to start or not.

You keep bringing up this 'bad defence' but Jordan Pickford was part of an equally bad defence, has only ever played 30 premier league games of football and will start for Everton next season. Id be shocked if we went to Arsenal away with wes and Huth both starting.

norwichfox Posted 19 June 2017 Posted 19 June 2017 They've both been great for us, and still have a part to play - form will dictate whether that is a major or minor part. They are both professionals and know what to expect with regards to longevity of a football career at top level, and realize that they will have to make way for the future to come aboard.
TJB-fox Posted 19 June 2017 Posted 19 June 2017 Yes morgan and Huth have been superb and I also think from the clubs point of view, it's their starting positions to lose (ie I think we'll start off with them 2) BUT it can be surprising how some players performance levels when they hit 33/34/35 suddenly just drop. Bit like start of last season (amongst other CR factors). So I'm glad the club is preparing for this so if/when Wes turns into a calamity for a few games were not debating whether to play Fuchs or Amartey there, we'll have a ready made proven replacement. Lets be fair too their time at the club, in a playing capacity anyway, is probably drawing to a close soon anyway unfortunately!
BrummieFOX Posted 19 June 2017 Posted 19 June 2017 I wouldn't be suprised to see Morgan and Huth start the season. Or, for us to play 3 at the back.
fuchsntf Posted 19 June 2017 Posted 19 June 2017 We shouldnt, forget Benny..If he stays hes also earnt to have his name on the roll call. Just saying like.. oh ...The idea behind the this topic....spot on, I want and expect both Morgan and Huth, to have an high % of the games, even if it might mean, they will drift out as the main stay pairing... Morgan after his summer rest, could well come back stronger.Huth with the team on the front foot, is still one of the best CBs in the PL.He like Morgan got caught out, with the midfield indescisions in front of them. If city have another CB, in their sights, it also wont harm..

I think the end of this season was evidence that when they get an injury now, recovery times are a lot longer than before.

Guest Col city fan Posted 20 June 2017 Posted 20 June 2017 McGuire does not need 'bedding in'. He needs to go straight into the first team, alongside Huth or Morgan. Huth would be my choice. What about Amartey? Would anyone play him alongside Harry? He aint a kid anymore.
Blue ROI Posted 20 June 2017 Posted 20 June 2017 Huth and Morgan were good for us under Shakespeare which is astonishing given how bad they were up until Millwall. Maguire will be one of the first names on the team sheet for us I would guess with Huth beside him. Theres not much between himself and Wes but the injury concerns would put wes on squad rotation.
Merging Cultures Posted 20 June 2017 Posted 20 June 2017 I thought I would start this thread as I may be alone but many seem ready to write them off and too many (maybe a few who are more vociferous) seem to be disrespectful too them imo.Yeah but that is because you are old and someone has written you off already.

I think you may find a back 3 is tested and actually all of them will play - however, I would not write off Wes yet as this is his first summer break in 3 years and he has hardly had an injury until the end of the last season! Knowing the two experienced pro's they will believe they have a bit more legs in them and they will be ready for preseason and hopefully the challenge of a couple of younger centre half's will spur the on!
Merging Cultures Posted 20 June 2017 Posted 20 June 2017 We cant play them until they're 50 just because of what happened 2 seasons ago.Ouch!!

Clubs that win trophies season after season do not stand still - there's a time when the biggest and best of players are moved on. We should have done this last summer but didn't. Maguire is a good signing and we need another. If I travel down to Arsenal and we start with Huth and Morgan I'll be fuming. We can criticize and want to replace players yet still hold the players in high regard. Starting to get fed up of these sort of threads as if criticising certain players means we don't like or respect them. I'm happy for our management to decide how our team should be put together and to settle for assessing the outcome. Our squad has needed strengthening and it seems that's what's happening. I don't see two immense contributors to our Premiership and other successes to suddenly have become useless.

mozartfox Posted 21 June 2017 Posted 21 June 2017 The EPL is probably the fastest and most frantic league in the World.. Lack of pace and mobility will kill you.. You can possibly afford one slow and experienced CB if you have younger legs there to assist against the quicker front lines. These are the facts and we cannot ignore this.. To play either of them with MacQuire and Chilwell there alongside to provide mobility will doubtless extend the pairs' playing life at the highest level for another season.

I didn't say they are useless. Both contributed massively but that was then. We need to move forward. Both players can still play a massive part but I wouldn't like to be relying on them as our main partnership.

Both 32 so realistically they have a maximum of 2 years left at the top.giving us time to integrate and try out new players formations and combinations.in shakey we trust!

ozleicester Posted 22 June 2017 Posted 22 June 2017 Love then. Heroes and legends. But i said two months ago "we wont see Morgan play for us again"?
