Yes his form has suffered the last few years. But the man IS a legend and will go down in history. He deserves a lot more respect than people give him.

Ultimately he never produced when it mattered, but then none of them have for a long time. Fair play for what he's achieved but I'm glad England will no longer be a circus around Rooney which it has been for many years now.

Wildly overrated International player who could never really produce the same performances for country as he did for club.

It's weird. He's the country's record goalscorer, but there are hardly any iconic moments that stand out during his international career. Against Croatia in Euro 2004? I'll probably remember him more for getting sent off for stamping on Carvalho's bollocks at the 2006 World Cup than for any of his goals.

The best player the last generation produced, which is pretty tragic really although for about 18 months he was up there just behind Messi, often woefully underperformed for England.

 

He never scored a goal against a top class international team in a competitive match. Wouldn't have him anywhere near a top ten in terms of England greats.

He's not an England legend - I've never seen one in my lifetime. He had a great tournament in 2004 and then arguably ****ed it for us in 2006. He has scored against some shit teams and as a first team striker for so long playing so many games he was always going to break the record.

Fair play to him for being honest. I think it'll make Southgates job easier now and allow him to try new formations, including going all in for 3-5-2.

 

I'm convinced Rooney is going to have an amazing season for Everton, fully focused and determined, he looks really sharp.

You can't really hold that against Rooney though. Barring the David Beckham free kick against Greece, i can't really think of any truly iconic England moments from my lifetime from any player
