I wasn't around when Bobby was, so I'd have struggled giving him stick tbf.

I'm just not going to celebrate a player because he smashed little teams but never showed up when it really mattered. He's England's highest goalscorer, not greatest.

Explain this please. Maybe his goals haven't been worthy of goal of the year but they are goals nonetheless.

The goals I smash past my little nephews down the park are goals also, doesn't mean they are important (well maybe to me).

OK, I kind of get your point. Maybe it's down to terminology. Greatest doesn't necessarily mean highest in this respect. That's just the way journo's label it. He's scored the most goals for England in international history so far.

Is that better?

When it comes to goals per game, his record is distinctly average. He's only the leading goalscorer cos he's played more games than other strikers. We also play a hell of a lot more games against footballing minnows than we did in the past. Plus he's never shone in a tournament, never produced it when it matters.

One of the most overrated players in history. Potential never fulfilled.

did you spend the previous 50 years slating charlton's record? cos the two records are remarkably similar, and if anything charlton actually scored more of his goals in uncompetitive games against minnows...

A few years over due if you ask me.

Rooney did well for england and is a "legend" for our squad.  Too bad we never won anything in his hay day.

Time to move on with the youth.

Never turned up when it mattered like the rest of them, do think he was a good player but not world class.

England have had only one world class player in last 30 years

it maybe another 30 years before they see another

When he first started playing for England he was one of the most exciting players I can ever remember watching. Unfortunately over the years he became a lot less raw which is what made him a world beater. Still, you can't argue with his record. Glad he has retired as I can't face another tournament of trying to shoehorn him into a side that he doesn't really work with anymore.

Love him or hate him he has had a very long England Career and is England's top goalscorer but the criticism is he has never managed to produce at a major tournament!

started his time back at Everton doing really well and obviously by getting in first and retiring from international football stops all the should he be in the squad or not comments and furore!

He was 100% world class in 2009-10. Knocking on the door of Ronaldo and Messi.

Unfortunately towards the end of that season he got an injury away at Bayern (?) with United and was knackered for the World Cup in South Africa after being rushed back too quickly.

Also disagree with @GaelicFox about us only having had 1 world class player over the past three decades because it's absolute norris. At their peak you could legitimately say that any from Ferdinand, Rooney, Gascoigne, Lineker, Scholes, Cole, Lampard, Gerrard etc etc were world class. Ferdinand in particular was absolutely phenomenal at his best.

Rio for sure. I'd also say Beckham and Shearer in their prime were the amongst world's best at their roles

It depends what is defined as world class, having one superior season or being consistently superior ala Messi, Ronaldo technically he is good but he doesn't have the pace of a Ronaldo or the skill/movement of a Messi but nevertheless still a good player maybe unlucky with injuries but even Messi and Ronaldo have been out for periods with injuries yet still produce.

Agree on the England part those other players are possibly better than Rooney

Not that impressed by Charlton either, similar record as you say. There's quite a gap in games played after Rooney and Charlton.

great bit of pace. especially for someone wearing a parachute for a kit.

Michael Owen was unbelievable in his prime. He was never the same after doing his knee in 2006, and could have been one of the most feared strikers on the planet for a good few years afterwards had he come out of it unscathed.

Cut the crap. ENGLAND legend rightly so 3-4 seasons at WClass level.

He got some stick on a few football fan forums, some comments for banter , on the Button,

but defenders around the world rated him. Unfortunately I cant remember his name but an Italian player

said of him that, he touched greatness, but unlike the real Wclass greats he just didnt have that consistency,

and to be fair he had some avg players around him in the England set up, but definitely one of the greats of English

football.

Thats how I see him...forget his off field antics and media hype.

I will say again his first 2 big injuries, he never really got going again, and England wise few teammates, that

could keep up  or see his vision on the field of play.

Some try to be negative on his goals scored, Charlton and Lineker also scored against some poor opposition,

so just typical jealous or snidey remarks....You still have to put it in the net, and history shows , also from long time past

when England won regularly with high scores, that nobody else dead or living had scored so many goals for his country,

and Rooney had to put up with some donkies has teammates.....He deserves and earnt the top accolades,

spitefull bravado on social media cant and wont undo that.

On a football field he at least lit up, this oldmans eyes, and at times like ALL  players frustrated.
