The last striker I really loved for England - scoring in tournaments etc - was Michael Owen. 

 

I agree Rooney has under performed but so have a lot of our so-called "World Class players".

well just based on what's been said in this thread;

 

that joe cole goal was against sweden, not a top nation, so doesn't count. 

 

that germany game was a qualifier, so doesn't count.

had the team built round him for pretty much every tourny but never,ever delivered. But thank god we had him against the Swiss in the qualifiers like!!! captain,leader,legend!

he's played what, 3 or 4 competitive games vs "top class international teams" (and that's only if we're counting portugal). so you're judging a 15 year, 119 game international career on about 4 games? interesting theory.

You have a very selective memory, of course you count that Portugal team, Figo, Rui Costa, Ronaldo and got to finals and semi-finals of major tournaments - but it's certainly more than "3 or 4" with or without them.

so he did score against one which sort of makes your original post look even weirder than i thought it was. 

 

we didn't play anyone remotely good in euro 2016 so obviously we're excluding that based on what you said? 

 

you're judging a whole career on 7 games then, sorry. seems fair. especially when you consider for the first two he was 18, and got injured in the second game. and the portugal 06 and italy 2012 games, considering we were sent out in both games to draw 0-0, not sure it was ever in either managers plans to actually score a goal in those games.

About time, dont understand the hero business. Was crap in every international tournament except his first, sadly the goal scoring record will be around a long time thanks to all his goals against minnows, got himself red carded in a vital match in a tournament we could have won and clearly had a huge influence on selection and tactics. Glad he has retired.

 

There has not been one england legend since at least 96 and there is no way granny shagger can be compared to the likes of Lineker and co who actually performed at world cups and made the country proud.

Rooney was great in 2004 but 3 goals in 17 tournament matches since then is not the record of a legend. 1 WC goal in 11 games(?), a tap in against Uruguay. As great as he was for United, he never really made it with England and since 2004 you'd say his memorable moments have nearly almost all been negative. Having a go at the TV cameras in 2010, stamping on Carvalho in 2006, getting sent off in Montenegro so he missed the start of Euro 2012. He had the potential to be an ultimate great - as did the whole team between 2004 and 2010 - but he never quite delivered. Of course, he's had to play under some shit managers and with a whole team playing shit but he showed in 2004 he could have been the player to drag us through, he just never handled it. Great career, fair play on the records but not a legend.
