I really don't understand this, or what the point of it all is.

So he's made a bit of an impression in USA recently but what purpose does it serve? Would Ashley Cole come out of International retirement as well?

Just prevents experimenting with any players or tactics in a friendly like this.

If the game is a write off then let’s hope Gareth decides to rest certain players that haven’t had much of a break since the World Cup. Especially those who have travelled to Bangkok in the last few days too...

With his reported weekly £300,00k wage, if he was charitable enough to donate some of that to charity instead of using just this game to create more awareness about his foundation (plus if he actually did something in the previous finals tournaments that he played in the past) - I'd be more accepting of him and this 'special' game announced for him.

Bit harsh Wymes ...   don’t forget he needs to keep the cash coming in so that Coleen and the kids can have their 22+ holidays a year !!

Remember when Podolski got his farewell appearance for Germany and was substituted to the Gladiator theme?

I wonder what Rooney will run off to.

The benny hill theme.

To be honest Rooney was a decent in his younger years but I'd say since 2009 he's really been poor and kept getting called was astonishing. Apart from Euro 2004 he never shown up at a major tournament and his outburst at the World Cup 2010 in game against Algeria where England were an utter disgrace a 0-0 bore draw against a team of part timers, England fans who paid a lot of money had the hope raised had a right to boo.

For me he's one individuals like Wiltshire bragged about for years but we never seen the best abilities not at international level at least.

Not having that, sorry. The guy was unreal in 2009-10, easily the third best player on the planet (until he got crooked in an away game at Bayern and we rushed him back for the World Cup), and that wasn't even his record season for goal-scoring.

People seem determined to have a pop at Rooney, perhaps because of the unfulfilled England promise, perhaps because of a few off-field misdemeanours that made the red tops, but he was an exceptional player.

I'm not criticising at club level I'm talking about internationally.

Correct me if I'm wrong but did Frank Lampard get a farewell match?

He does donate to charity. I think about this time last year he donated 250k each to three seperate charities in Liverpool.

A brilliant idea. I would play him in a front 3 with Gary Lineker & Bobby Charlton so all 3 could try & smash each others goal scoring record.  Surely a place for Sir Trevor is long overdue with Michael Owen on the bench for when the old'uns get tired.

Its only USA ffs.

Yes, to be fair he has 4 children to support. Allegedly half a dozen grannies, too.

Leicester legend Peter Shilton slams decision to hand Wayne Rooney 120th England cap
The ex-England star isn't impressed with a decision that has sparked controversy

Leicester City legend Peter Shilton has slammed the FA’s decision to award Wayne Rooney his 120 England cap later this month.

The Three Lions host the USA at Wembley in an international friendly on November 16 and it’s been confirmed Rooney will be recalled for one final time, giving the nation a chance to bid farewell to its leading goalscorer.

Shilton, who holds the record for England caps with 125 believes by awarding one to Rooney, after a two-year absence, cheapens the value of earning the right to play for your country, and could hamper the progress of other young players, like James Maddison, who are yet to earn a first full cap - especially with a key Nations League game against Croatia to come just days later.

“I was shocked when I read it and I’m still struggling to understand the decision,” said the 69-year-old.

“It’s been two years since Wayne last played, England are on a new threshold and have just had a great World Cup but are going backwards with this.

Should Wayne Rooney be handed his 120th cap?
THANKS FOR YOUR VOTE
Yes, he's earned it18%
No, what a joke67%
I really couldn't care15%

“That’s not to say that Wayne does not deserve a tribute but give him a presentation, don’t just give caps away which is wrong and also denies a young player a chance as well,” Shilton told Mirror Sport.

At least Rooney won't get near Shiltons England apeearance record unless of course they decide for some reason to give Rooney more England testimonials

Presume it will just be for 5 minutes at the end - and I guess Rooney will be hoping the fans he told to "f-off" at the 2010 World Cup aren't there incase they start booing again?

Next friendly could be for the Jamie Vardy foundation/academy - he has one doesn't he?

This will start happening more and more now with the advent of the Nations League.
