If Ihear one more person say United were sensational I'll scream.....THEY ARE NOT ****ING SENSATIONAL... we sat off them and basically allowed them to score.... they will not piss the league and I think they will struggle to finish in the top four..... we were beyond shit, which eventually allows them to score two shit goals.

They are no no better than last year.

Completely disagree with this. They are much better than last year and will be top four imo. Pogba might not score enough but he pulls all the strings for them now. Lukaku was the striker they needed to replace Ibra. And they have a much stronger squad (eg. Herrera on the bench).

Nah, not having it at all... they've had three of the easiest games to start the league... they will struggle against all of the big boys this year.... as for Lukaku he may bag you 20 goals, however he misses about 99 chances in a game.... I'm not convinced, until they smash one of the big boys I won't be.

Personally I agree.  They did not look sensational.  We just looked poor and without a plan, other than sitting back defending a draw.  Either the execution was terrible, or Shakey had no plan.  I'm going with the latter.  As for Man U not being in the top four...not so sure about that.  Some "top" teams look a bit ragged this year.

You consider us 'one of the easiest games' in the league? By definition, one of the worst sides?

I agree they didn't look sensational but they were always in control.

I think Shakey did have a plan: to sit and contain and hit them on the break. Defensively we were so much better than at Arsenal but it was still 2 lapses in concentration that led to the goals. Simpson was unlucky to concede the penalty but it was the right call by the ref and Kasper definitely did his homework on Lukaku.

If we had stayed switched on we could have sneaked a 0-1 win. Our trouble offensively was that we couldn't string any sequence of passes together and our decision-making was lousy. Apart from a few good long passes towards Vardy, Matty James was just not very good yesterday (I do think he'll have an excellent season, though). Gray typified our toothlessness in attack when he put Mahrez through too late AND overhit the pass.

So, it could have easily been the type of smash and grab win we used to get in the title-winning season but we just weren't good enough. The big plusses were Maguire (again) and Mahrez. Maybe Riyad was playing for a move but I hope if he stays he can put in the kind of performance he did yesterday in most games while he's here. He caused Blind some real problems on the few occasions he had the chance to and, although he did shirk the odd challenge, his defensive work was often good.

There are reasons for optimism I think, we just need to cut out those stupid defensive mistakes and use the ball a bit better.

On yesterday's showing yes... not suggesting we are the worse but on occasion we can drop in a shockingly bad performance.... like yesterday we didn't even threaten them, we sat off them and just watched them play football... when we play like that, yes we are very easy to beat.

There was evidently no plan B yesterday. We NEED to work on ball retention we needlessly give the ball away time after time and it's getting tedious. Yesterday we literally got possession and then lost it, and that happened all the way through the game....

Setting up as defensive as we did we were never going to get anything, it looked like the team had been told they get a better gift for every minute they don't concede. Disappointing that we didn't just go for it and if we concede that way then start to try and keep the score low.

I agree with most that we need a creative midfielder, and I hope CS is all over that this week.

Morgan and Maguire looked strong today and neither got bullied by Lukaku. If our defense keep playing as they are it will take alot for other teams to break us down. Just need the players in front of them to play as we know they can.

Well I'm surprised how bad most people think we were. I was really happy with our performance and it filled me with hope.

We were playing away against a team that are playing in europe and will be playing in the CL next season. Surely they are at least of the calibre of Atletico Madrid (I'd say better this year) and better than Seville. We wouldn't be too downhearted with a 2-0 away defeat in the CL knockout stages would we?

As I said before the game Manchester's defence is not outstanding but the speed and passing of the attacking half of the team is excellent. To have Rashford as your oncoming sub is something special.

Anyway the game from my pov.

Kasper, Maguire and Morgan were very very good. I'd like to apologise to Wes because I didn't think he had that in him any longer, Fuchs wasn't bad, he managed to restrain himself from going forward and did a decent job when I expected him to be killed. Simpson was the weak link and despite everyone knowing he can't do anything in the attacking half stil went forward exposing his wing.

The midfield nearly held out well. NDidi was great in the first half closing down Pogba at every opportunity and James swept well and delivered a couple of juicy balls for Vardy. Ndidi, is a great young talent but he tired in the second half and his one lapse of concentration was enough for Rashford to be unmarked for the goal. Mahrez had his best game for a long, long time, he worked so hard going back that he foiled several Manure attacks and going forward he always looked dangerous. And of course Albrighton on the other side covered Fuchs ass and again his defensive discipline took something away from his attack but that was okay.

Up front this wasn't the game for Okazaki but after his revelation in the first 2 games I don't blame Shakey for playing him. Vardy looked dangerous and I was surprised he was the player subbed off when Slim came on. I think they can be a deadly partnership.

King came on and did well though he sat off a little too much when Manure players were just outside the box, Slimani looked good too, I love the way he gets the ball lays it off and then moves forward. He just needs time alongside Vardy. He worked hard defensively too. Finally we had Gray, everybody's booboy at the moment. He had been told to keep the ball and take people on for the last few minutes and he looked dangerous on the pitch no matter what a lot of you are saying. Yes there was one time he should have passed the ball to Mahrez, but he was eager and inexperienced and needing to show his ability, if he'd scored we wouldn't have cared. A minuted later Mahrez had the ball and shot when he should have pulled the ball back to a wide open Gray inside the box (after some great off the ball running), he didn't but we're not going to have a go at Mahrez because we know it could have worked but it wasn't the best option.

Overall I came away from the game very optimistic. Yeah we only have 3 points from the first 3 games but two of them were away and not just anywhere but Arsenal and Manchester, the other match I seem to remember people thinking we'd lose or only get a point. We've played well and looked good and I think we're on for top 8. My confidence is high.

I just hope we sell no-one (apart from non-players like Benalouane and Ulloa) and pick up another couple of good defenders - definitely an RB.

What we spent was a drop in the ocean. The clubs people are expecting us to compete with spend more and they do it regularly.

Lost 6-3 on aggregate away at The Emirates and Old Trafford. 2 big aways over with.

Won first home game & in next round of cup. 2 potential banana skins avoided.

Exactly as we all expected & possibly better. Season starts again in a fortnight.

I'm with you on this one - as daft as it sounds one of our better performances at Old Trafford. You rightly identified Kasper and the two cb's being superb. An united fan told me after the game he was getting frustrated with Maguire because of how superb he was.

There were teo two or three breaks where we made the wrong choice. Okazaki shooting in the first half when he could put Mahrez. Gray could have put Mahrez in. A couple of crosses across their box.

I really don't get the criticism

N'didi is getting progressively worse...each game he looks more and more lethargic, his passing today was absolutely awful!

Give the kid some credit - he's been generally excellent since joining and there's no way he's getting worse and worse. He played probably the hardest midfield opposition he's had in his career yesterday.

His passing can be improved but he's equally capable of some great passes.

Support him because he's a 20 year old lad whose given his lot for this club and was being watched by a lot of bigger clubs when we signed him.

Not only a loss, but we looked bad too.

I was in a pub full of united fans who commented that we are probably 7th/8th/9th best team in the league......

What did people expect from an away game against what'll probably be the champions this season? We really weren't that bad, Jesus wept.

Yep, particular when at least three of the big six teams will try the same game plan

I was thinking that I'd obviously had more beers than I realised, then along came Col,FIF,Cardiff and Cyprus to make me realise I was not the only one with a drink problem lol Joking aside I don't think we were far off from a decent result!

Not bothered by the result. We aren't competing for top 6. It's the games against the others where we make a difference to our season so let's wait to see what team we have and what happens then before getting too carried away.

I'd love to know the answer to this from someone with genuine inside knowledge.

On the one hand CR seemed to indicate that recruitment was a seperate operation. On the other hand Steve Walsh left and there were rumours of disagreements. Why did he really leave? What happened afterwards? Did he then take a larger recruitment role?

Can’t find too much criticism in the performances at all... it’s the decision making that has worried me so far.

I’d hoped Appleton had enough about him to help make strong informed decisions on subs but the first three games evidence is worrying.

I also worry about how were going to fit two £25m plus strikers into our time regularly enough to keep them happy. Kelechi wont stand for being a sub again that’s for sure. Imagine he will get the starts after international break, but what if Shinji who has performed in every game so far (impressed defensively yesterday for me)

Drop in the ocean ??  Are you sure about that?   If you gave Rudkin and our Recruitment Team the same funds as the two Manchester Clubs I do wonder what sort squad we would have.

Posted

The entire game can be summed up very easily, we played like we expected to lose and we got what we expected. There was no forward drive in the team so inviting a shot every 3 minutes is going to invite goals in your own net. There is just no cohesive link between central defence to central midfield to central strikers and there is no way Fuchs or Simpson are going to carry the ball the length of the pitch.

The team doesn't need, it requires a creative central midfielder who can dictate the play of those around him. Stand up Iborra and be counted or the DD of two seasons ago.

Yes, what we spent is nothing compared to what the big clubs have spent on their teams. They pump in that sum and more year after year to build their teams.

Don't see the problems with the subs yesterday, Vardy, Marc and shinji were getting nothing, gray, despite his decision making, was threatening, king got a good chance denied by de gea, and we needed a change up front.

12 on mendy, 17 on musa, 28 on slim, 17 on ndidi, 17 on maguire, 25 on nacho, 15 on Iborra - 131m spent gross, kante and Schlupp out makes 88m net. Net is only a few million more than man Utd spent on Lukaku alone, gross, is about the same as just pogba and matic. Compared to the big sides it is a drop in the ocean, we can't go out and spend 70/80m on a single player, man Utd had two in that ball park on the pitch yesterday.
