We were playing away against a team that are playing in europe and will be playing in the CL next season. Surely they are at least of the calibre of Atletico Madrid (I'd say better this year) and better than Seville. We wouldn't be too downhearted with a 2-0 away defeat in the CL knockout stages would we? As I said before the game Manchester's defence is not outstanding but the speed and passing of the attacking half of the team is excellent. To have Rashford as your oncoming sub is something special. Anyway the game from my pov. Kasper, Maguire and Morgan were very very good. I'd like to apologise to Wes because I didn't think he had that in him any longer, Fuchs wasn't bad, he managed to restrain himself from going forward and did a decent job when I expected him to be killed. Simpson was the weak link and despite everyone knowing he can't do anything in the attacking half stil went forward exposing his wing. The midfield nearly held out well. NDidi was great in the first half closing down Pogba at every opportunity and James swept well and delivered a couple of juicy balls for Vardy. Ndidi, is a great young talent but he tired in the second half and his one lapse of concentration was enough for Rashford to be unmarked for the goal. Mahrez had his best game for a long, long time, he worked so hard going back that he foiled several Manure attacks and going forward he always looked dangerous. And of course Albrighton on the other side covered Fuchs ass and again his defensive discipline took something away from his attack but that was okay. Up front this wasn't the game for Okazaki but after his revelation in the first 2 games I don't blame Shakey for playing him. Vardy looked dangerous and I was surprised he was the player subbed off when Slim came on. I think they can be a deadly partnership. King came on and did well though he sat off a little too much when Manure players were just outside the box, Slimani looked good too, I love the way he gets the ball lays it off and then moves forward. He just needs time alongside Vardy. He worked hard defensively too. Finally we had Gray, everybody's booboy at the moment. He had been told to keep the ball and take people on for the last few minutes and he looked dangerous on the pitch no matter what a lot of you are saying. Yes there was one time he should have passed the ball to Mahrez, but he was eager and inexperienced and needing to show his ability, if he'd scored we wouldn't have cared. A minuted later Mahrez had the ball and shot when he should have pulled the ball back to a wide open Gray inside the box (after some great off the ball running), he didn't but we're not going to have a go at Mahrez because we know it could have worked but it wasn't the best option. Overall I came away from the game very optimistic. Yeah we only have 3 points from the first 3 games but two of them were away and not just anywhere but Arsenal and Manchester, the other match I seem to remember people thinking we'd lose or only get a point. We've played well and looked good and I think we're on for top 8. My confidence is high. I just hope we sell no-one (apart from non-players like Benalouane and Ulloa) and pick up another couple of good defenders - definitely an RB. I agree with most of this bar Simpson. I think defensively he was very good. I know going forward he is not great but his positioning and blocking is really superb. As a "defensive" right back I cannot think of many better. X But aye, in general, very good summary. X

Net is only a few million more than man Utd spent on Lukaku alone, gross, is about the same as just pogba and matic. Compared to the big sides it is a drop in the ocean, we can't go out and spend 70/80m on a single player, man Utd had two in that ball park on the pitch yesterday. I do not recall saying we should do that.......What I am concerned about is that the cash we do spend is not spent very well and this will continue until we overhaul the scouting and recruitment regime.

So compared with say all EPL Clubs excluding last seasons' top 6, little old Leicester's transfer spend was a 'drop in the ocean'? Really?

Okazaki was totally the wrong selection for yesterday imo, he can't hold the ball up and just falls over too much and we never get a free kick, I think given the chance Slim would have been a better partner to Vardy yesterday.
Adster Posted 27 August 2017 Posted 27 August 2017 Did people watch the game? The performance was really nothing to complain about at all. People are forgetting who we were up against. I came out of Old Trafford pleased at our performance. It does fill me with hope.

The first two thirds of the game were a bit of a nail-biter, but you could see that we managed to frustrate Manchester United quite a bit, also thanks to Maguire playing his lung out and Schmeichel pulling off some fantastic saves, including parrying that penalty. Once Ndidi switched off to grant Rashford to smash it in, we were all over the place and were unable to recover. And I don't think the substitutions helped, either. Like I said in another thread, you can lose at Old Trafford. It's the manner of defeat that riles me more than anything. Our midfield and attack were simply no match for the hosts.

I have personally seen many Okazaki performances like that against the stronger teams so even I knew it wasn't going to work with our game plan. It worked 2 years ago but Okazaki being on his arse didn't cost us because we had Kante. In games where we play extremely possession based teams, we can't play a player like him anymore.
FoxyPalace.com Posted 27 August 2017 Posted 27 August 2017 How long can we play this silly game of defending all game? We all sit watching knowing its only a matter of time before the goals come. Lets start passing and controlling the game much better, clearly investment is needed in the middle. King, Ulloa and others must be binned.

Do we have a Plan B, just in case, that Vardy scoring on the break doesn't work? I really can't see one. Bring back Ranieri!!! Where the hell are you when we win or play well?

chris_lcfc_85 Posted 27 August 2017 Posted 27 August 2017 Nobody can moan too much about losing to a side like that but it's the manner. We barely had a shot in the whole game, created very little and we're one of the worst sides for losing possession. We can't carry on doing that in all away games

He shouldn't be played against these teams. He's not up to the physical challenge, can't hold the ball and his technical ability is too limited to allow any decent link-up play upfront. We looked better forward when he was off.
RumbleFox Posted 27 August 2017 Posted 27 August 2017 To be fair, watching Chelsea-Everton and we looked better than against Utd than Everton do currently against Chelsea. I think some people need to realise that we cannot go to Old Trafford and steamroller them. I still feel confident we will finish comfortably top half. Let;s not get too down on our players, manager and owners after three games eh else what's the point in football? X

TO be fair, once Iheanacho is fit he likely wont be. I love Okazaki, but think you are right, if we rotate him and Iheanacho behind Vardy depending on opponents we have a pretty good strike force. X

We won the league it was amazing and a sporting miracle, it doesn't mean we can compete with the top clubs every year, they spent more on 2 players (lukaku and pogba) than our whole squad cost. It's ridiculous expectations that spread negativity we should just enjoy our recent success and get behind our players who mainly came from nowhere for modest fees. Still, does not mean we have to turn up with those tactics and mind set so negative.
foxinsocks Posted 27 August 2017 Posted 27 August 2017 look at this - just in my inbox entitled "A Valiant Effort": I know I have have had issues with the presentation of stats - but this seems a bit crazy - as 36% of 11 shots = 3.96 (say 4) shots on target for us; while they managed 32% of 22 shots i.e. 7 shots on target; thou we did manage more on target shots per minute of possession.... work it out...

jammie82uk Posted 29 August 2017 Posted 29 August 2017 INCIDENT: Kasper Schmeichel saves Romelu Lukaku's second-half penalty SCENARIO: The Leicester goalkeeper produces a fine save to keep out Lukaku's spot-kick at Old Trafford, though Schmeichel is off his line when making the stop DERMOT'S VERDICT: Wrong decision DERMOT SAYS: If you're going to have a penalty retaken, then this is one. He is too far off his line. Goalkeepers don't dive sideways, they dive forward, but when you go further and further forward, the assistant should have told the referee that it has to be retaken. INCIDENTS: Juan Mata sees a goal disallowed for offside, while Marouane Fellaini nets from a seemingly offside position SCENARIOS: A tight call sees Mata flagged for offside and denied the opener in the first half. Fellaini goes on score United's second in the 82nd minute after Jesse Lingard's cross-shot was diverted home by the knee of the Belgian. DERMOT'S VERDICT: Mata decision correct, Fellaini decision wrong Were United’s two offside calls correct? DERMOT SAYS: Lightning strikes twice because this is almost identical to the Alexandre Lacazette incident last week. It's so tight, so marginal, but it's just offside. Fellaini is offside. I heard an interesting view of it on the weekend, because of it striking Wes Morgan on its way through, but that's immaterial as that is all it was - Morgan doesn't play the ball and Fellaini is just offside.
