I still don't get why it was a penalty in the first place?

Surely if the infringement started outside the box then the free-kick should have been given at the very point it began? Why would continuing into the box turn it into a penalty?

Me neither. The attacking player decided when the whistle went by diving when he was in the box. The whistle should have gone when he was first grabbed.

There's been a few instances over the years, ten years ago I remember someone official saying it doesn't matter where the foul happened if they're running into the box and other times more recently saying it has to happen where the foul happened. I'm on the side of the latter because you've got players carrying runs into the box and leaping over the line to get the pen, it's ridiculous.

It's just one of the gray areas of the game like offsides and handballs where the protocol seems to change every other year

From Law 12: Fouls and Misconduct

If a defender starts holding an attacker outside the penalty area and continues holding inside the penalty area, the referee must award a penalty kick.

because the rules say it’s a penalty if it carries on into the box

Would be great if Rochdale pulled this off.

As for the penalty Son paused so long that his own teammates were in front of him when he kicked the ball. Incredible.

Holding is a continuing offence and so the free kick/penalty is awarded where it ends.

As so -

But did he hold him in the box. Looked like he'd let go but the attacker pushed his own body back into the defender. anyway justice was done.

Hope Spurs keep bottling.

What are they crying about "not knowing what's going on" They're checking if it's a goal or a penalty dicks.

is what the ref on BT saying here correct? it’s VAR protocol to check every match changing decision? every goal? that is insane. why make something that could be good and could be useful so fu cking stupidly shite hahaha

I think the Trippier definitely took advantage of the rule. I think he could have stayed on his feet, but knew the defender was still in contact, and went down as soon as he got in the box.

Indeed. It should be the same as rugby where the ref refers to the video ref if they want something checking. I don't understand why they are making it so difficult.

only thing screwing VAR up is the time taken to get a decision and fans in the stadium not knowing wtf is going on.

Can understand why all the decisions made/checked were done so.

yeah, even in rugby they overuse it for tries that are completely obviously tries, but they have a bit of discression cos they can do the whole thing in 30 second whilst the kicker’s lining up his kick.

reviewing every goal and every penalty is a horrendous ideal.

American Football and Cricket can let the officials explain to the crowd what the review is about in real time.

It ain't beyond the wit of man to do likewise in football.

EVERY bit of match action?! we had to check the rochdale goal in this game when he was obviously what, 4 yards onside? it’s dumb as fu ck. what’s the point in even having a ref or a linesman if nothing they judge is actually going to matter anymore. just let the players go out and play and if there’s any disagreements on what’s happened watch a video review to decide the outcome.

Had VAR not been available, would the penalty decision have been given?

I don't think so, the initial contact is outside the box, the ref should have blown when the initial challenge was made.  All this retrospective stuff, it's ruining the game.

Imagine if this had been given against us, we wouldn't be happy about it.  The fact that it's Spurs makes it all the more comical though.  lol

In rugby you can hear the ref and it tells you on screen what the referral is for. Same goes for cricket. It's like some of these refs have never seen technology before, it's embarassing.

Will never understand having to telephone a hub in heathrow either when you can just deploy a man upstairs in the ground
