baldeagle Posted 3 January 2018 Posted 3 January 2018 Have we ever signed someone who can genuinely play left or right back . I know a lot of the muck we’ve had in the passed has struggled to play one side yet alone two .

I think we always look at safety first when buying a full back i.e, can he cover the centre backs and defend properly first and foremost! Edited 3 January 2018 by pazzerfox

Well, Hernandez was a centre back converted to right back. If this guy's a full back then that's a start. The other problem with Hernandez was the total lack of pace and I'm not sure whether that's the case with this guy. When he signed I remember someone at the club (Ranieri?) mentioned that Hernandez had a little more pace than some of our defenders, but statistically he was one of the slowest ten players in the PL last season. So if the guy is a full back with some degree of pace, he won't be another Hernandez even if he is a little lightweight (there are some passable full backs out there who aren't physically imposing). None of this means he'd be any better than Hernandez, of course!

KingsX Posted 4 January 2018 Posted 4 January 2018 Give him the Captain's armband. Finally an answer to the Jon Moss and Bobby Madley problems.

Yeah I'd love Mallo, especially as we like collecting captains! He's probably destined for a bigger club than us mind. I didn't realise Jonny was only 23 though, could be a good signing.
somebum Posted 4 January 2018 Posted 4 January 2018 There must be some young kid coming through. Says everything about our academies and all that bollocks that the only one to come through proper is ben fcuking childwell. What are we playing at everyone we sign these days is from overseas. I know Riyad was a million to one and Kante but theres a longer list of catastrophic failures like Hernandez, Zeiler, Musa, Benny, so many to mention recently

Of the other four Hernandez and Zieler we didn't lose any money on. Granted Benalouane and Musa were awful buys but you win some you lose some.
notnow john Posted 4 January 2018 Posted 4 January 2018 Somebum has a point,what about Inler,Mendy, Kaputska. 1

Perhaps it's just an unfortunate case of them not setting in well in a foreign footballing climate etc, which has happened to many other players from many different clubs in the past?

I'm sure if you spoke to most fans of other clubs they could cite more signings who've failed than been successful. West Ham signed the likes of Feghouli, Gokhan Tore, Calleri, Zaza, Nordveit coming off their best season in years and they all failed. Whilst Lanzini has proved to be a great signing from an unknown source. 2

If you look at certain "star" players in the league at the moment - they failed at other clubs - DeBruyne (possibly the best player in the prem) at Chelsea for example.

But in relation to current market, we got them for pennies so not exactly catastrophic failures. Also we still own Bart so he could still turn into a superstar for all we know
UPinCarolina Posted 5 January 2018 Posted 5 January 2018 Mendy will be back here at the end of the season, IMO.
pazzerfox Posted 5 January 2018 Posted 5 January 2018 Even the great Sir Alex made some poor signings. Obertan, Bebe, Veron, Djemba Djemba, Kleberson, Taibi to name a few. It's a simple fact that some will fail and some will flourish and it's difficult to know exaclty how that will pan out until they are integrated. 1
RoyFox Posted 8 January 2018 Posted 8 January 2018 Was impressive against Real Madrid last night, obviously a small sample size but he was assured with both feet, didn’t panic under pressure and going forward he was excellent, his one-two with Alpas had Madrid in all sorts of bother resulting in a penalty. Looks an upgrade on what we have. 1
CosbehFox Posted 9 January 2018 Posted 9 January 2018 Celta in the process of signing a new full back.
