Ive often wondered if the step up from U23s to 1st team is quite as big as folk make out....or whether its just a bit of a glass ceiling for managers to use an excuse not to pick younger inexperienced players (ie self preservation).

If the system is similar throughout the club at all levels then it's easier to progress, only recently have we had this in place though but at least we've caught onto it.

Hamza is sheer class in a glass.

This boy should be starting for us and leading us within a couple of years.

I don't know about starting every game but I do agree he needs to be in the first team squad. He has terrific energy which we lack in midfield and is not afraid to get stuck in. At the moment he plays it a bit too safe. He needs to get his head up and pick out some forward passes. But he is getting there and I do like him in the team.

I think it's a choice between him and Silva for a starting spot.

At the moment because of his experience Silva just edges it, But I wouldn't be surprised by the end of the season Hamza sees him off.

I agree that the system should be same throughout the club and that the first team style of play should dictate the way the development side play ....but I dont agree we have caught onto this yet as can be evidenced by the fact that >70% of goals scored last season by Beagleholes "hoofball" team were scored from set-pieces by our big centre-halves.

Beagleholes preferred style of lower-league play is totally different to the first team and Im guessing that might be one of the reasons why Puel had him along on the first-team pre-season trips so the message could be re-enforced.

That will only happen if you pick managers with a similar philosophy you also need to be fully aware the style/systems change and evolve.

What we need is for all the youngsters to have certain basic abilities and attitudes such as control of the ball, first touch, passing, physical strength to hold off a challenge (not to be confused with size see Muzzy) etc and a team ethic. So players with all the fundamental skills plus specialist position skills to be able to adapt to any evolved system.

If there is any takeaway from Academy's participation in the EFL trophy it's that these youth squads with ringers are not on a football league club standard. And that's not necessarily a failure of the academy's but it should be recognized whenever anyone expects our academy kids to make the jump to our senior squad. I see that you want the local lads to come good so bad but it's wishful thinking with a quixotic mismatch of expectations. Would you really expecting someone from non-league to make the jump to our senior squad? Of course not. Let the kids develop. Let them get games at a level between the academy and our senior squad because it is a huge jump.

And how many 1000s of kids are in academies with the same dreams while those 3 succeeded. Our Academy doesn't have the prestige or heritage as Man U, Liverpool, or Chelsea. They can find and care for the diamonds better than we can. It's one thing to say a diamond is out there. It's another to have one. While you want to bring up the England squad look at Maguire and Kyle Walker and the journey it took from the Sheffield United Academy to prove they were England worthy. They proved they were good every step of the way. Harvey Barnes is out there proving he's good. Can't say much about the others.

Chilwell made his debut against championship side in league cup then went on loan to championship before playing a prem game.

Schlupp went on loan to league one Brentford before playing Championsihp Football here.

Andy King made his debut in a relegated championship squad.

This is a higher level of Football. Who is getting straight to top flight minutes? Who since Hesky went straight to the senior squad in the top flight?

I take your point that diamonds are rare...but where diamonds exist, clubs should be prepared to take the risk as the step up is only too huge for those that are not good enough.

Rashford, Trent-Arnold, Woodburn, RLC, Davies, Kenny, Ampadu, Hudson-Odoi,, Rice, Foden, McTominay,  (and many others!) have made the 'huge' step-up directly from U23s football without too much difficulty so for the best players, the step is clearly not as massive as many people still believe. Clearly it would be folly to expect several young/untested players to make the step simultaneously as this would almost certainly unbalance the team but with 8 or 9 experienced players around them, it is quite feasible for 1 or 2 of the better young 'diamonds' to make the step up and bridge the gap directly from U23s football.

(PS one of the main reasons Harvey Barnes is 'out there proving he's good' is because he isn't being given the opportunity at Leicester. He absolutely wanted to stay and play at LCFC this season and by all accounts has been outstanding in training to try and impress Puel but even after 2 seasons on loan impressing in the lower divisions, he knew he would not be given the chance here this season. It appears that even when we do have a 'diamond', we seem reluctant to use it. Perhaps that is one of the reasons also why the academys of Liverpool, Man Utd and Everton have such a heritage...?)

Saw an Instagram post yesterday maybe from josh knight. It was of Sam Hughes and it said he’s back. Anyone know where he’s been? Injured? On trial somewhere? Personal reasons?

Ah, I wondered why Darnell had pipped him to the centre back pre season role in the first team. I hope he's fit enough to go on loan. I'm not sure if Puel will have both Darnell and Hughes in the first team.
