If Vardy doesn't start on Thursday then I was obviously wrong, will you admit you've got it wrong if he does?

I’m not sure you are reading mate. Ive argued your point over Southgate ‘knowing Vardy’. He ‘knows’ Wellbeck and Rashford just as well. So that’s a non argument. I’ve also said it’s not the time to be putting ‘final touches’ to the side. He should know his best side and should be letting them play together.

Bringing on Wellbeck after what 60/70 mins showed Southgate absolutely nothing.

Regarding Vardy, I hope you are spot on and that Southgate plays his best side (and best subs) on Thursday. Personally, I’d have done it for both games.

Finally, all you are doing is making a hunch. You have no idea what Southgate’s plans are.

For the plonkers above...let me make it clear... I hope you are right. I want to see our most natural striker playing games. I’d have given him game time TONIGHT by a country mile over Wellbeck

Like I say I wouldn't be surprised if Vardy doesn't feature at all.

I thought you have been arguing he’s second choice striker? Now I am confused

It's really not that complicated. He's got two games before the tournament starts to answer any lingering questions he has about his players and to get his sure starters match ready. Vardy is not a sure starter but equally has a very clear role in the squad and it is of limited value to bring him on for 20 minutes in these games.

lol  You're the one who ignored the content of my post before that because it started with the phrase "common sense".  It's a national team, there's far less opportunity for Southgate to be 100% sure of the best XI than if he were a club manager who gets a full season with the squad playing together week in, week out, and we all know that even club managers often struggle to work that out over the course of a season due to the effects of form and injury so of course a national team manager will be even less certain of his best starters in a given month let alone his best second, third etc. options.  It's not like England's a nation of world beaters where the team picks itself.  And of course I'm going off a hunch, are you not?

Kane will start again on Thursday but Vardy will get half an hour. Now that Southgate has decided to play two right backs it's curtains for Maguire as Cahill will be given the nod for his experience. Shame as his passing is integral if this heinously defensive system is to gain anything.

Maguire has missed a couple of days training I understand.

Doesn’t mean what you say won’t happen... but there’s possibly more being read into why Maguire didn’t feature. Cahill’s goal today does him no harm obviously.

I think Cahill and Stones will start in the opening game, if fit.

I think we can pretty much name the starting 11 now.

Oh did he? I'll await making judgement then but as he seemed to be out of favour in the last round of games bar for injury to others that forced Southgate in to bringing him on coupled with Walker now clearly being played at RCB.

Poppycock! If he doesn’t know his best 11 by now, we have a problem.

100% sure I said, fact is it's all subjective.

No probs mate. I just wanted to use the term ‘poppycock’ in a sentence. It’s ages since I have done.

I'm hoping he brought Rashford and Welbeck on to experiment rather than because they're who he expects to start. I can't take anyone seriously who thinks either should be ahead of Vardy.

In all honesty I've no idea why Welbeck's gone at all.

First half was very decent. Thought Nigeria were poor which helped but we once again played some good football going forward even if we did often bodge up the final ball. It's better than under previous managers that's for sure.

Second half was pretty bad. Natural for the performance to drop off a bit as more and more subs are made but it felt a little bit like England of old.

I'm surprised we're only playing two friendlies.

That'd be stupid though, do that and by the first game of the World Cup Vardy hasn't played in a month. Should play the entire squad at some point over the friendliest.

Shame that playing for England isn't based on player's club performances etc, and just on big-club associations etc.

Shame really, as it doesn't bode well for the decent young talent at other clubs not being considered based on them being at a 'small club'.

It's getting predictable and to be honest, tiresome.

Welbeck being chosen ahead of Vardy is a big example, and it's frustrating.

The FA and how the England team/squad etc is run needs a clear-out and a new fresh perspective in order to move forward.

*sigh* I was really trying my best to hype myself up for this tournament but I’m starting to get that same almost nauseous feeling of banal monotony that comes from watching England. Its all so tiresome. Please play fvcking Vardy so we have something that might just bleed some excitement back into what I’m afraid could be an utter drearfest (again).

Edit:Perhaps I’ve jumped the gun with my negativity I’ll repost after the Panama match.

We need to play football. And that’s not the FA blueprint of how football should be played from the first team down to the U15’s. We have some raw talent but the style lacks any real value in succeeding in this or any other tournament. It’s so crap it’s laughable.

If a ****ing last legs Gary Cahill starts over Maguire against Tunisia we deserve all we bloody get.

I still think Southgate's a fan though, all said. Surely he can see that starting a world cup with three centre halves, two of which don't play for their clubs and one of which is a right back is ****ing daft. Be sensible Gareth you prat.

I’d be more interested with Walker at RCB if the right wing back chosen was a ful blooded winger, because that, alongside Dier with two other central midfielders would provide a massive amount of flexibility in terms of shape and dynamic attacking movement.

And it terms of Vardy - with Kane wearing the armband, he’ll do well to get any level of minutes at the World Cup.
