Can i make a serious suggestion for a rule that should come in?

Lets say there is a clash of heads, or a coming together between two players, and a player from the DEFENDING team has to go off the field as a result, before he can come back on.

If the situation is that the attacking team has a free kick, or a corner for example, the defending team should NOT have to defend without the man on the field.

UNLESS

It was deemed by the referee, that the act of the defending player feigning injury was gamesmanship or bending the rules.

Something like this, but going further.

Currently a foul that doesn't result in a sending off can result in a counter attack against a team with 1/3rd Or 1/4 of the defence off the pitch.

There's taking one for the team, and then there's getting an advantage due to foul play.

Move the offside start point from the half way line to the edge of the penalty area. The law was brought in to stop goal hanging being offside at the halfway line is stupid and just squeezes the playing area up. Should make it easier for the assistant ref as well.

On a serious note, I know it's not a rule as such (though it could easily be) but I'm a big fan of the rugby approach whereby only the team captain can speak to the ref. This works well because the ref isn't getting a barrage and I think in that moment the ref summons the captain (or captains) he gives himself a bit of thinking time. I think our refs are often far too hasty to make game-changing calls but I also think they get easily flustered because they've got 8 or 9 players screaming at them - much better to speak calmly with just two and it also puts the onus on the captains to exert a bit of influence and take responsibility for team discipline.

I think if the atmosphere on the field was less hostile then maybe refs wouldn't be so shit lol

For that matter why can’t free kicks be taken immediately? Why does the offending team get a chance to re-group?

I used to love seeing quick free kicks they're not illegal but just seems to be the way refs and most teams want it. I hate all the wasted time setting up free kicks to then see so many go sailing over the crossbar.

They tried this didn't they not sure why it stopped probably got fed up telling the top 4 teams to follow it.

Try these;

1) Penalty goals for handball on the line. No sending off.

2) Penalty awarded for any last man foul regardless of whether it was inside or outside the area. If the attacking team miss the penalty, the player who committed the foul is sent off. If the penalty is scored, he is not sent off.

FIFA have often used World Cups to introduce new rules to the game so I wondered what rules people would like to see introduced.

I’ll start with a few genuine ones and at least one silly one. See if you can spot the silly one....

1. If the teams are drawn at the end of 90 minutes just add 5 minutes and then do away with injury time altogether

2. No substitutions allowed after 80 minutes.

3. The moment after the referee indicates a substitution can be made, the player leaving the pitch cannot touch the ball-this would stop players sauntering off slowly to waste time

4. A player cannot be off-side in the penalty area if there are at least three defenders and the keeper also in there

5. A maximum of 8 players from the defending team are allowed in the penalty area at any one time

6. Create a much larger arc around the corner flag and make it illegal to keep the ball in that area for more than 3 seconds

7. Every team must include at least three players from each gender

8. No more ridiculously pointless threads on FT.

Football is essentially a fantastically simple game, one of the most simple sports to play in the world.

We're already battling the interpretations of laws that can complicate the game we love. These suggestions, while a joke I know, do nothing more than seek to overengineer the best sport on the planet. Can we please stop trying to fundamentally change the rules of football?

I wouldn't mind seeing 'replacements' like in rugby. So, a player is injured and needs treatment. If they can get up and walk or be carried off, the replacement can come on temporarily in his place. The injured player is assessed and treated on the sidelines. Then, either:

(a) The injured player comes back on for the replacement (this could be done in-play to save time)

(b) The replacement stays on the field as a permanent 'substitution' (indicated to the fourth official so as not to stop play

(c) A different permanent substitute can replace the replacement (say, if the manager wants to change shape/tactics).

There would be no limit as to how many times a player can be used as a replacement, except for when they're made a permanent sub. In that case, the only time they could go off and come on again is if they themselves become injured and are temporarily replaced.

All seven players on the bench could be used as replacements if needed.

Perhaps this would stop a bit of timewasting as only the most serious injuries would keep a player on the pitch for a significant length of time. Also the team with an injured player wouldn't be at as much of a disadvantage because they wouldn't be a man down for a couple of minutes or so.

It may also help safeguard against injuries if a player can be properly assessed on the sidelines without the fear of that team having fewer players on the pitch. It may also help medical staff do proper concussion assessments before allowing a player to continue.

Or perhaps this just means that going down and waiting for a stretcher will be a new gamesmanship tactic.

Just an idea, but it probably opens up other new avenues of timewasting/gamesmanship.

In a penalty shootout, if scores remain level after each team has taken five penalty kicks, then both the penalty taker and the goalkeeper are blindfolded and made to turn on the spot until dizzy before each of the remaining penalty kicks, until someone scores.

One rule I would like to see is 7v7 in extra time. That would open things up a bit.

We've done something similar in youth festivals for a bit of fun.

golden goal extra time starts 9 v 9 and a player has to come off every 5 minutes.  I think we got to 6 v 6 once, but never further

It's what they use at the Hong Kong 7s tournament, iirc.

Reckon it would be brilliant for cup games, and make it a lot more tactical too, with managers 'playing chess' trying to predict who the other team will take off and how they can take advantage of that.

I'd tweak it slightly and go for something like this:

90-95 minutes: 10v10

95-100 : 9v9

100-105 : 8v8

HT, 1 additional sub allowed

105-110 : 7v7

110-120 : 6v6

If still tied at 120, penalties (as normal) but with just the 6 players left on the pitch.

And for general cup games in things like the Champions League, get rid of the away goals rule (ideally entirely, but at the very least it needs to stop counting AET)

They’re ridiculous as well.

1 - What stops a player just handballing it on the line all the time? It was going to go in anyway so it’s worth the game that the ref might not see the handball

2 - How can you say the red card is dependant upon the penalty being scored? If it’s a minute into the game you’d just miss the penalty so the opposition go down to 10 and gamble on scoring more than 1 for a better goal difference

Every five minutes a player comes off and you reached 6v6 that’s 15 minutes of extra time. In a youth tournament?

Can Morgan even speak when he stands on grass?

I quite like number 3, subs made and no time lost, ball goes out of play, ref allows sub, sub comes on straight away no waiting for the player he's replacing  to come off and player going off just can't touch the ball or interfere with play while leaving the field by the shortest route and walking around to the dugout.

Without GK and two balls.
