FIFA have often used World Cups to introduce new rules to the game so I wondered what rules people would like to see introduced.

I’ll start with a few genuine ones and at least one silly one. See if you can spot the silly one....

1. If the teams are drawn at the end of 90 minutes just add 5 minutes and then do away with injury time altogether

2. No substitutions allowed after 80 minutes.

3. The moment after the referee indicates a substitution can be made, the player leaving the pitch cannot touch the ball-this would stop players sauntering off slowly to waste time

4. A player cannot be off-side in the penalty area if there are at least three defenders and the keeper also in there

5. A maximum of 8 players from the defending team are allowed in the penalty area at any one time

6. Create a much larger arc around the corner flag and make it illegal to keep the ball in that area for more than 3 seconds

7. Every team must include at least three players from each gender

Number 7 is by far the most sensible rule change out of the lot.

It doesn't work though because you'd have to massively increase the number of players per team to have three players per-gender.

What does 3 even mean?

I think we should play fo points in the first half and again for the second half. so at half time if it is 0-0 it should be 1 point each team and whoever is winning at half time get 3 points. Same again in the second half so you could get 6 points a game this would give the first half more to play for

The only one I think has any merit is number 6. I like the idea of stopping teams just camping in the corner flag when they're winning in injury time.

The rest are all really silly.

Can i make a serious suggestion for a rule that should come in?

Lets say there is a clash of heads, or a coming together between two players, and a player from the DEFENDING team has to go off the field as a result, before he can come back on.

If the situation is that the attacking team has a free kick, or a corner for example, the defending team should NOT have to defend without the man on the field.

UNLESS

It was deemed by the referee, that the act of the defending player feigning injury was gamesmanship or bending the rules.

In number 3 the ball wouldn’t be dead but the player leaving the pitch couldn’t touch it. The substitution would happen while play was continuing. In this way the player going off would leave the field as quickly as possible. Obviously, the player coming on couldn’t kick the ball until the other player had gone off first.

I know they are called laws rather than rules but this is a misnomer as a law is a universal directive in a nation state. Football is a game, not a nation-state.

But surely the other player in the incident, from the attacking team, would be injured aswell and would also have to go off too, so there is no real advantage to either team.

What’s wrong with suggestion 5? Surely this would stop teams packing the penalty area and keeping 10 men behind the ball.

Haven't the officials got enough to concentrate on without having to constantly count how many players are in the box all the time?
