Martin O'Neill has left his role as Republic of Ireland manager by mutual consent.

A statement on the Football Association of Ireland's website confirmed that assistant manager Roy Keane, goalkeeping coach Seamus McDonagh and assistant coach Steve Guppy had also left their positions.

Former Celtic and Leicester boss O'Neill has been under pressure in recent weeks after Ireland failed to win a game as they were relegated from Nations League Group B.

O'Neill led Ireland to Euro 2016 in France, where they reached the knockout stages before being eliminated by the hosts, but a run of one win in 11 games since last November has seen the national team endure a difficult 2018.

FAI chief executive John Delaney said: "I would like to thank Martin, Roy, and the management team for the impact that they had with the Ireland team.

"There have been many highlights during Martin's reign - none more so than Euro 2016 in France, which will live long in the memory of all Irish supporters.

"Martin did a great job guiding the team out of a difficult qualifying group - where we beat world champions Germany along the way - to reach Euro 2016 and advance to the last-16 following a historic victory over Italy in Lille.

"I wish Martin, and the management team, the very best for the future."

Republic of Ireland have struggled in 2018

O'Neill replaced Giovanni Trapattoni in November 2013 and, as well as leading Ireland to Euro 2016, he also took them to the play-offs for the 2018 World Cup where they were beaten 5-1 by Denmark in November 2017.

That result signalled a downturn in form and results, with a friendly win over the United States in June proving to be Ireland's only victory since those World Cup qualifiers.

The national side have also gone 397 minutes of football without scoring a goal since Aiden O'Brien struck during September's 1-1 friendly draw in Poland.

Monday evening's 0-0 Nations League draw with Denmark in Aarhus, during which the Republic failed to muster a single shot on target, proved to be O'Neill's final match in charge.

The FAI statement said the board would now "meet promptly to discuss the process of recruiting a new manager".

Don't watch too much of them but I've seen a lot of pundits and ex-pros today saying how turgid the football had become.

To be fair, he didn't have a lot to work with. They're quite pants.

However, as much as I love the man and would always welcome him back here, he hasn't really moved with the times as a coach.

I think he’s pretty much had his day in management now. A friend of mine said he would have him back here at Leicester. I wouldn’t & if he did he would bring that wánker Roy Keane with him.

You can only move with the times, when as you mentioned one has something to work with...

the Irish sides have the obvious spirit, but Unlike their Rugby equivilant, they really haven't had the quality, in his tenure not even Championship Quality.I

Now and again teams like them will, have their eras, but it will always be difficult for any manager/coach to pull them up into a 2nd ,1st level international

Grace status. The Nations-league might slowly improve their lot,but 1st they need a quality generation, like Wales who can take them there!!

One thing is for sure O'Neil and his N.Irish equivilant,it would be unfair to judge their Int.careers...

What can they expect 30-40% success-rate at Best!!!I With the odd upset,or suprise Draw.

But O'Neill is known to be one if the few managers left who relies on man management and doesn't care about prozone or sports science and man management alone just isn't enough in the modern game.

He was a great manager for us in the 90s but I wouldn't want him back here now. I don't think he's a manager for the modern game.

Martin didn't have the tools to work with. Any half-wit knows this. Those having a dig at him or questioning his ability, just come back after his successor has had a few games. Past his sell by date my arse!

Fielded 7/8 defenders in various different positions the other night in a meaningless friendly against Denmark.... think that says it all really.

I'd agree to some extent....but until he gets a job in the PL in the next year or 2,it stays a mute point.

even when he left Celtic,on choice I wouldn't of wanted him to return, but like any he would of been welcomed..!!

His hands were tied Internationally,he could only work with good profis ,but none on the middle to high PL level.

So we can't judge what he could of done, with an higher quality group of players...

It's so easy to pick out the obvious doubts, nobody can prove otherwise..!!!

International management was always wrong for MON, he's a club manager he needs to be with the squad every day of the week, instead every so often. This was perhaps why never got the England job. I hope this is not the last we see of him management, he's certainly still a very talented manager, just needs the right job.

Michael O'Neil will be on there list but why leave Northern Ireland?

O'Neill has always been a spiky character, I just wonder if his man management has suffered as time's moved on and we find ourselves in 2018. His teams used to always add up to more than the sum of their parts. Most of that must have been down to the way he motivated his players. We were often a team in his own image when he was here, scrapping, fighting and giving it all coupled with some great quality. Not unlike the Forest team he played in in many ways. I just wonder if today's players don't respond to him in the same way.

Of course, it may simply be down to the fact that this isn't one of the better eras for ROI in terms of players. Just as England have suffered from the amount of foreign players in the premier league, so too have ROI, Scotland, Wales and NI. The Republic's squad is not nearly as strong as it has been for most of the last couple of decades.

Sad for O'Neill, but not no sympathy for Keane.

The latter was apparently the main initial cause of their form deterioration, when he threw his dummy out of the pram again.

Looks like Foxes Talk has finally cut emotional ties to MON. He worked wonders with his team of Walford and Robertson in club football but Keane was always going to be toxic and I could never see it working .
