Leicester Fosse

Recommended Posts

This year is the 100 year anniversary of us becoming Leicester City! According to Of Fossils and Foxes we officially did so around July, but today marks our last ever game as Fosse.

I’d love to see a bit more celebration of our history!

Am I misremembering this or did we not hold a straw poll in the ground at half time about whether or not to change back to Fosse about 15 years ago? lol

Yes. Was in our promotion season I think - first one at the Walkers Stadium?

Ironically we as fans were given a democratic choice in deciding the name of our club - on the day we played Wimbledon who were about to get decamped against their will and moved to Milton Keynes

Personally, I voted "Fosse" but I recall it was pretty much a landslide for "City"

I voted Fosse too, mainly because of the people on East Midlands Today complaining about their tattoos no longer making sense.

Part of me wishes we'd retained the Fosse name given how unique it is, but changing to City ties in nicely history-wise as it's the same year Leicester became a city.

Yes - we battered poor Wimbledon 4-0 that day, Dickov hat-trick with a couple of penalties. I was 13 and remember holding up my C. I think about 85-90% of the crowd voted City.

If I get chance, or someone else doesn't, I'll dig out the programme and post photos of the section talking about the vote.

Didn't we also do a staw poll like that a couple of seasons later when voting to ban smoking in the stands?

I can't  believe how many people including me saying they voted fosse, in the ground when the cards went up we were outnumbered about 5000 to one.

Every fosse voter must be on here. I meekly held up my F amid thousands of Cs.

It was a mini brexit moment. I was roundly heckled by a rather opinionated old dear who 'playfully' tried to wrestle my F and turn it to a C

It was at that time I realised I have absolutely nothing in common with 99.9% of city fans

I was relieved we stayed with City. Thought Leicester Fosse sounded a bit awkward and wilfully nostalgic for a time no-one could remember. A backward step, like voting for horse-drawn cabs and top hats. It would have had an element of 'ooh, look at us, aren't we different' kind of thing.

I was a Fosse voter that day. I was in the Family section behind the goal and sun was shining gloriously on us as we voted..The Leicester Mercury took a great pic of the stand during the vote with me and mates in the centre of the pic.

It was published and looked so good my Mum went and bought a copy.

I'll have to dig it out.

Leicester reject name change
Leicester fans vote
Leicester fans have the final say and vote to stay as City
Leicester City fans have voted overwhelmingly not to change their name back to Leicester Fosse.

New chairman Jon Holmes, installed after a consortium took over the club, launched a campaign to revert to the club's original team name.

But fans gave the idea the thumbs down in a half-time vote during Leicester's 4-0 win over Wimbledon on Saturday.

The majority of Foxes fans held up "C" cards, indicating they wanted the club to continue to be called City.

An announcement at the end of Saturday's game gave fans the news that their votes really had counted, declaring "City would remain City forever."

Holmes had wanted to wipe the slate clean for the promotion hopefuls as they gradually come out of administration.

It was also believed that re-branding the club could have financial advantages.

But Leicester boss Micky Adams believes it is important that the fans had the final say.

"I'm delighted for them that they can see a rosy future for this football club," he told the club's website.

"I think it was quite obvious during the game that there was only ever going to be one decision made by the fans."

Yes because everyone who voted for city didn't know what they were voting for apparently,  oh sorry thats another vote we had.

Also recall Stuart Hall (remember him, kids?) on the radio enthusiastically urging Leicester fans to vote for the change,

An excellent reason in itself to stick with 'City'.
