I’ll be doing my full league review at lunch but my first thoughts are that Chelsea are being grossly over-rated by pundits. You could argue they have lost their best defender, best midfielder and have a strikeforce which badly needed a lead striker last season, let alone this

Agreed, I think Lampard will have done a good job if keeps them in top 6. Decent in midfield but not a lot else.

Kepa, Azpilicueta, Rudiger, Christensen, Alonso, Kante, Jorginho, Barkley, Hudson-Odoi, Pulisic and Giroud probably they're best team. Couple of them currently injured too.

Also Pedro, Willian, Loftus-cheek floating about and obviously Mason Mount too. The fact that there is a chance Tammy Abraham will be their first choice striker shows how short they are.

Exactly. And all being held together by an inexperienced manager, with no ability to bring anyone in during the January transfer window.

I think we can have a serious punt at fourth (what with Wolves stretched with Europa). United and Arsenal haven't impressed at all in the window and I can see Chelsea finishing outside the top 6. Buzzing for Sunday.

Steady on a bit!

Fancy Arsenal to be much improved this season. Less so for Man Utd and Chelsea.

So Man City, Pool, Tottenham nailed on for top 3, with likely Arsenal 4th, 5th and below up for grabs.

Arsenal have had a great window IMO and have a decent manager in charge. I think it will between them and Spurs for 3/4 spots.

There are only a handful of players at Chelsea and United that we would swap ours for, so that shows we should be able to compete with them. Performances against those sides last year show we aren't far away. Any success we have will be dependant on us beating ordinary teams at home. Time for the players to deliver on hype and potential.

Be interesting to see how Luiz gets on. I dont rate him at all defensively. Their attack could be very dangerous.

Oh I don't doubt they can score goals, but that hasn't been their Achilles heel for the last 15 years. Everyone knows what they need to buy but they never seem to do it, slightly bizarre really.

My pre-season thoughts:

MANCHESTER CITY - 1st - Sensible summer signings. There is enough talent with the existing squad to evolve as players even further. Only weakness I can see is a soft centre back partnership and a left-back issue where there's no specialist. Suspect they will piss this league year out.

LIVERPOOL - 2nd - Clever by Klopp in not chasing new signings. Use the cycle of his existing squad. Personally think teams will become even deeper against them and that may cause them issues. I am expecting Salah and Mane to be very tired by Christmas. Still expect them to do well in the Cup. The Anfield European night thing is cliched but it's clear the squad enjoy the one-off occasions.

CHELSEA - 8th - As I have already mentioned being grossly over-rated by pundits. Write out their first choice eleven and you struggling to say if they are top six good. All three strikers not the quickest guys. Wingers and full-backs past their peak. A lot being made of their youngsters but they have very little experience between them other than Championship level.

TOTTENHAM - 3rd - Well an actual Summer in which they added to their existing squad with good prospects. They will continue to hover on 3rd place but there are issues forthcoming in three ways. Over-reliance on the striker role with Kane. A defence which is coming to the end of his peak. Pochettino likely to pop.

ARSENAL - 4th - Simply going to be incredibly exciting going forward but still very suspect to those days when they lose due to a lack of physicality. A defence and central midfield which is very rash and will lose games via needless red cards. However, fair play to them as their suggestion to the defensive issue is we will just score lots of goals.

MANCHESTER UNITED - 7th - Another summer of baffling transfer policy and continuing to allow a level of mediocrity to run throughout. I am interested to see how VAR affects clubs like Manchester United because for certain they are not going to get fortunate decisions at home like they do. Solskjaer is probably the worst qualified coach in the division. He's currently winless in six and as zero identify when it comes to playing style.

WOLVES - 9th - Wolves are bloody good team with a very attractive squad of talent. However, there's a stat that every non-top six team what's qualified for the Europa League generally loses 15 to 20 points on your previous season. Tactically I think teams will be more cute to the deep position Wolves take in games. They will finish 9th but have a good Europa League run and that's not a bad season.

EVERTON - 5th - Now I am not entirely sure on my prediction for Everton - I am not huge fan of Silva's presence; he's arrogant. I think Gueye is a huge loss to them regardless of replacement - he wasn't just one of the best DM's in the league, he was one of the best DM's in Europe playing for a non-CL club. Strong as an attacking threat but their choice of centre backs is interesting. Multi-goal games a lot.

LEICESTER - 6th - A lot can be said of Maguire's departure but ultimately if you intend to run the club on a model of sustainability in our position, you have to trust the 'process' (e.g. give Benkovic and Soyuncu the opportunity - suspect Justin and Praet's purchases are the likely indicator regards departures next Summer). However our season will be defined if a few players can push on - can Maddison become a double goal man? Can Perez be that second striker we need? Can our defence be reasonably safe?

WEST HAM UNITED - 10th - A squad full of talent, a good manager and rid their squad of players with the ability to upset the rest. I think they are at the beginning of a cycle (just like Southampton) where a strong season this time out, sets them up for the season after. I am interested to see Fornals play. Maybe a key link into evolving their style from direct to far more pretty football. Actually think they will give Man City a really good game tomorrow.

WATFORD - 13th - There's a problem with Watford and their fans will be getting a bit restless. They have a sensible model and wise owners. However, they have a position as a feeder club now. Foreign manager and foreign player come to Watford, adjust to PL football and then leave. The ambition to stop that cycle of the departure doesn't occur. Fully expect half and half season.

CRYSTAL PALACE - 18th - A bloody awful Summer for them and I am fairly convinced Hodgson is at the end of his career. Zaha blowing his top and the fans reacting isn't a good look. Will continually hopelessly limp around for long spells of the season. The decisive point will come when they have to recover.

NEWCASTLE UNITED - 17th - There's no reason with their squad that they can't have a steady season. Albeit they are asking a lot of their new Brazilian striker given how Rondon is probably the world's greatest at a single target man up front. Probably one injury at the back away from chaos mind.

BOURNEMOUTH - 12th - Their signings this Summer made sense but they are coming to crossroads in terms of where do they go. I think the larger point I am making there is that they have a number of players who will be looking to make the next step in their careers upon a successful season. A huge issue that they haven't sorted is their goalkeeper. Begovic refusing to leave and the back-up being a 40 yd old and a young kid. There is attacking talent there to still have a good season. Howe should be paying more priority on the cups.

BURNLEY - 14th - Will find this season a walk in the park I reckon compared to last season. Settled team and squad with their effective way of playing. I would say Dyche is going to have to start making big calls soon as their squad is aging.

SOUTHAMPTON - 11th - Now I was going to rated Saints higher. I think they have a manager in the top half of the league. They will find a style which suits them. Good signings but still a bit light at the back. A solid season with room to progress ready for next season.

BRIGHTON - 16th - Really being under-rated. They have a very, very good manager and have nothing to lose. Their defence is generally fine but they just need to make the parts going forward work. They have moved to a 3-4-3 formation to carry this off.

NORWICH - 19th - Woefully short of the required quality I think. Quite simply that. I think their full-backs will praised to high tilt but the rest of the team will struggle. Could be a very Huddersfield esque season - completely altering their style to try and get the required points.

SHEFFIELD UNITED - 20th - It's very likely Wilder will lose his temper mid-season and quit. Tactically an extraordinary team but can't help feeling it leaves them so wide open at times that Premier League clubs will have a field day. Will take some hammering but I will wage they will take a big scalp at Bramall Lane.

ASTON VILLA - 15th - Yeah I am not entirely sure that their signings are great but there's enough quality in there to collect the points. I can see a scenario where Villa sack Smith in the bid to attract an available manager. If they make Villa a bit of a fortress against the lower half teams, that's them mostly safe.

I agree. I think it is imperative they secure Champions league though.  They are paying the Pepe deal over 5 years I beleive at c£20m p/a. Without the CL money, it could be a shot in the foot as that will be deducted from future budgets. T'is going to be a very interesting season indeed!
