washing machines

Recommended Posts

My very old Bosch 1400 express  classixx decided to die on me today so now I need a new machine, it is only my second machine in 20 years, the first being an Indesit.

Going to check out Amazon and Ebay but was wondering if anyone has any recommendations of what to go for and what to avoid brand wise?

Depends on your budget but I've always found Beko to be a good cheap brand.

If I had to buy one I'd probably go for something like this:

Not certain yet how much I want to spend, always try to go for quality so I avoid Hotpoint :teehee: going to have a good look at things, maybe check out Marks Electrical too, there new place is just around the corner from where I work so if things were to go tits up I can rant at them during my lunch break lol.

Never tried Beko, gonna see what the reviews are like :)

Check AO.com. Decent price many brands and great service. I bought a hotpoint from there a few years back based on reviews and it’s the best washer I’ve ever had.

Cheers, just checking them out now on Ebay :)

Bosch are great. When our Bosch died though we went for an LG 9kg direct drum from ao.com.

Only thing we didn't know at the time, the difference between an old machine and the new ones is the fluctuation of the water inlet.

Newer machines have this to reduce water and make them more efficient. Only drawback is something called water hammer from the cold water inlet which makes a banging noise when the cold water goes into the system.

You can get a device to reduce it but it never goes.

Only saying this cos the first time we used the machine, I set it up on delay timer to use at night and the noise nearly gave me a heart attack at 2am!!!

Actual LG machine is really good start from that though!!!

All our appliances are Bosch and I wouldn’t buy anything else. Can’t beat German engineering.

John Lewis for quick delivery

Leaning to Bosch again, AO do look good price wise though and they do a free collection it seems, just got to decide on how much to spend, £70 difference between 7kg and 9kg machine.

My old Bosch lasted about 14 years but pretty much disintegrated earlier today sounding like a cement mixer, nothing lasts forever though.

Bosch or Neff or Miele.

And go to Marks Electrical.

Had a look, they currently do not have in stock what I was looking at and I cant wait a couple of weeks :) and I do not really want to buy something else just because what I want is not currently available.

I bought one of those Samsung ecobubble machines a while ago and all I can say is it was one of the most problematic machines I have ever owned (maybe Samsung should stick to the televisions). I've got a Zanussi now, and while they are generally regarded as being one of the cheaper brands, I've not had any problem with it. I tend to get a lot of my larger appliances from AO - good service, but I hate the hard sell on pointless insurance cover.

Bosch seem to be best value for money, make some solid machines which last years. I'd avoid all the frilly unnecessary features too, it's just more stuff which'll probably break on you. Marks Electrical also hasn't let us down for the Cooker or Washing Machine.

Had this Bosch for about 5 years without incident, before that it was a Tricity Bendix which lasted about 7 years, the thing wouldnt complete a wash and eventually became unresponsive so called out the local A-Z 'washing machine specialist', first he said it was the pump which he replaced for £50 + £40 labor - which didnt fix it - so called him out again, he said its the PCB, he can get one for £150, I go on eBay and buy one for £40 and tell him I'll pay for him to replace it and set it up, he suddenly sounds hesitant to deal with it. Moral of the story was buy a solid washer and prioritise it lasting a long time over calling in doughnuts to try and rip you off at every opportunity, if not then buy cheap and prepare to replace cheap whitegoods every 3-5 years.

buy it from john lewis for obvious reasons, certainly not AO and definitely not currys

Once bought some very expensive curtains from  John Lewis, picked out the pattern, ordered, waited and got the wrong item, contacted the store and re ordered and,...…..got the same curtains yet again.

Went into the store and met the head of that department who apologised because they had screwed up and no longer had in what I wanted, so they gave me a  50% refund and the curtains they had already made.

They are a good store but they still mess up, though the alarm clock that cost me a fair whack is still going strong, its a multi light, self tuning, self setting clock with built in radio etc.,

Honestly, go on ohmydosh.co.uk and sign up for a month's free trial on the review website 'which?'. You get cashback for signing up. Make sure you cancel within the month to not get charged anything by 'which?' as its normal subscription is ridiculous. I did it last year and got the cashback.

I found that 'which?' reviews are really reliable.

Only last year my washing machine broke down and I used that website to choose a Beko that has been bloody brilliant.
