Leicester City picture special: Remembering Filbert Street - 45 great images of the past

The one above is from the book commemorating the final season at Filbert St, it is a view of the Leeds fans (who were disgraceful that day).

A real shame we couldn't redevelop the ground, would've saved a lot of money and kept use of the Carling and Double Decker stands to give it some character.

I think any redevelopment would've only have been limited compared with the potential the club have now on Freeman's Wharf.

Mark/DavieG I remember posting loads of photos on here of the game against Tottenham.

Was in a special thread somewhere do you know where that thread is?

The state of it now is shocking. Overgrown car park with no indication of what was once on the site. All other demolished grounds have something, even if it's just to mark where the centre circle was.

Was that the day Leeds fans was trying to get through to the kop.

We've had incredible times at the Way but it still looks a bit bland, and tired in places. Should we increase capacity I hope we have a facelift in the present areas, plus a nod to our overall history, like the banner around the top, returns in some fashion.

Most unlikely i know but it would be amazing to have a stand similar to the double decker at the king power. Something that creates a real loud atmosphere and feels enclosed.

As someone who only got a few seasons at filbert street as a young lad i've got really fond memories of the place.

Agree RE about nod to history. All we have is King Power banded about the place.

Always think it would be really good if our current ground was actually called "Freeman's Wharf"...........character

Or Raw Dykes Stadium

The Raw Dykes represents a rare survival of a Roman water control feature in an urban context. It is particularly unusual in that it could not have operated on the more usual gravity flow principle utilized elsewhere in Britain, and thus represents a segment of a comparatively complex system which would have required both intensive labour and considerable engineering skills to construct. The remains of the Raw Dykes survive well in the form of a series of substantial earthworks. Since only a small section of the earthworks have been subjected to archaeological excavation the remainder of the site is comparatively undisturbed and will therefore retain significant potential for the survival of buried deposits. As a result of the survival of both historical and archaeological documentation relating to the site the remains are quite well understood. The location and accessibility of the Raw Dykes considerably enhances its function as a public amenity.

Details

The monument includes the remains of a Roman aqueduct known as the Raw Dykes situated immediately west of the junction of Aylestone Road and Saffron Lane, Leicester.

Raw Dykes?  Away fans would love that.

They would but it would show up their total ignorance and who cares anyway what they might say revel in it.

So, what part of Filbert Street were you standing or sitting in for your first ever game and where did you end up for your last?

For me, it started in the North Stand, followed by brief appearances in the Centre Stand, Main Stand, Double Decker, PEN 4 before ending up in PEN3. No doubt that the best atmosphere was in PEN3.

Started in the Double Decker lower, moved to the Double Decker upper then ended for the final three seasons in the Family Stand.

Started in the Popular side (East) when it was all standing and no segregation, used to then going either the Kop or the North Stand when you could stroll from one end to the other at half-time when it wasn't a full house. Moved to the Kop all standing, stayed there when it was all seater, occasionally went in the Double Decker, ended up for the MON era until we left sat about 4 rows back form him. I only ever went in the Main Stand upper for reserve/Family footy nights. in the

Started in the Kop, then the Double Decker upper, then the Carling Stand and back to the Kop for the final few seasons.

It's impossible not to feel nostalgic for Filbert Street, but the memories we've created in the 18 years since the new place was built are incredible. Promotion in the first season, that 4-0 win over Leeds in the second, the miserable years between 2004 and 2008, winning League One at a canter, dominating the Championship in 2013/2014 and, of course, our first ever title and subsequent Champions League campaign with genuinely iconic games against Sevilla and Atletico.

It feels nuts to think that Wes Morgan lifted the Premier League trophy on the same spot where Josh Low once struggled to control a football and Ryan McGivern was once skinned by Jimmy Kebe, but that reflects the diverse times we've had since the ground was built.

I just hope that the extension of the ground, if and when it happens, that the place gets a bit of a character and a refresh as it quite often does not look or feel like a ground that's packed in arguably as much history in under twenty years as the previous 120 at Filbert Street. I would like to see a reintroduction of the banner across the roof, a statue outside and some serious work done on the concourses.

Should be in the unpopular opinions thread this, but I disliked intensely filbert street. Those two sides were an embarrassment.

The lopsided ground summed the club up at the time. Everything half done. Half baked. Make do and mend. Partly to be proud of and partly to be embarrassed about.

Even if the inside is bland and all King Power where the cameras will be but the outside and approaches should shout out Leicester City Football Club from 1884 and all years in between.

Get rid of the Sky Blue windows of the external West Stand for starters.

I really hope the make the East Stand with a Grand Entrance that can be seen from and with an avenue from Aylestone Rd.

My affiliation with Filbert St is not so much the building but the memories and the way we watched and participated in supporting the team. One could argue that the memories have been surpassed or at least equalled by what we've achieved at the KP, depending on how long you've been a supporter But the way you supported the team the close proximity to the pitch, the smell of the pitch, the standing, the swaying and movement of the crowd, the closeness of fellow supports, the singing, the meeting up inside with no reserve seating, has not and can't be equalled never mind bettered. It's been watered down to a cinematic type experience at the KP.

Started in the Members Stand when I first started going with my Dad.

Family Enclosure in my early teens with my mates.  I think it was about £1.20 to get in & I couldn't really afford the Kop which was probably about £2.50 lol

Double Decker & East Stand a few times, but mainly the Kop (standing & sitting).

I have some great memories & some totally shit ones too.  It's easy to get romantic about how great Filbert Street was, but if it hadn't of been knocked down, it probably would have fell down.
