Police break up dozens of New Year's Eve parties and gatherings under Tier 4 rules
£10,000 fines have been issued after officers were called 191 times in 24 hours

Leicestershire Police handed out 75 fines over New Year to people who breached the Tier 4 Covid-19 restrictions - including six of the maximum £10,000 penalties.

Officers say that between 7am on New Year’s Eve and 7am today police received 191 reports of Covid breaches by the public.

Six of these fines were £10,000 fines for holding a gathering for more than 30 people.

They were:

Five people were issued with £10,000 fines for holding a party for more than 30 people at a private residence in Kimberley House, Vaughan Way, Leicester

One person was issued with a £10,000 fine for holding a party for more than 30 people at a private residence in Granby Street, Leicester.

A further 57 fines were issued under Tier 4 rules for gatherings of two or more people in a private dwelling and indoors.

The total value of all of these fines adds up to almost £74,000.

Assistant Chief Constable Kerry Smith said: “We are very pleased that the majority of people followed the rules and are part of the efforts to keep us all safe.

"However despite the warnings there were still people who thought it was okay to ignore all of the rules and government guidance risking the lives of all around them.

“We have heard how the new strain of Coronavirus is rapidly spreading and it is vital that we take the appropriate steps to protect ourselves and our families.

“If you choose not to follow the rules you are putting others at serious risk and you could face a significant fine."

ACC Smith added: “Sadly, my officers, who have given up their own time with family over the New Year to keep the public safe providing a service throughout the day and night despite the risks, had to deal with people who thought the rules did not apply to them.

"It is disappointing and frustrating that this behaviour continues but we would encourage others to contact us if they see a Covid breach as we will do our best to deal with it.”

More than 50 unlicensed music events and New Year's Eve parties were broken up by the Met in London overnight for being in breach of tier four rules.

Five people were reported for a possible £10,000 fine for organising large gatherings, while another 217 were issued with fixed penalty notices.

Two men, aged 18 and 19, were found with stab wounds following one party near Edgware Road.

Commander Paul Brogden said: "Our enforcement activity will continue."

London is currently in tier four meaning people are not allowed to mix with other households indoors or in most outdoor venues, although an individual can meet one other person in an open public space.

Officers were called to a total of 58 illegal gatherings in the capital as people celebrated the start of the New Year.

The events closed by police included one in Alfreds Way, Barking, in which between 70 and 100 people were dispersed, and another in Kemp Road, Chadwell Heath, where the organiser was issued with a £10,000 fine.

Police said four people had also been arrested at a gathering in central London for breaching Covid regulations.

The two stabbed men were found injured in Edgware Road at about 00:30 GMT.

A 17-year-old girl was also found with a head injury after she was hit with a glass bottle. None of those hurt are in a life-threatening condition.

The Met said the attacks were linked to a party in Connaught Street which had earlier been dispersed by police.

One male was arrested on suspicion of common assault, while a woman was held on suspicion of GBH.

Cdr Brogden said "the vast majority of Londoners complied with the Covid regulations", but officers "did attend a number of calls to parties and unlicensed events across London".

He added: "We are still dealing with the stark reality of fighting a deadly virus.

"I urge Londoners to continue to keep themselves and their families safe by staying at home."

Matt Hancock has confirmed that over 1 million people have been vaccinated in the UK.

If the average doctors practice is say 10,000 people, then they each need to vaccinate 4500 people to cover off all the at risk groups ( 50+ or younger with conditions).  I imagine someone can do as many as  75 jabs a day perhaps ( I went for the flu jab recently and so watched the time that it took).  So if you have 2 people working at any one time for 6 days a week, that  is 900 a week.  So given sufficient vaccine a single dose could be given  in 5 weeks.

That is perhaps too optimistic as we will be reliant on vaccine supplies initially?

Already? Well, that went well.

Got a feeling its more to do with staffing levels and ability to give out the vaccine, as opposed to actual amounts of vaccines. The cause of pushing NHS to the brink for so long. Staff aren't invincible.

Get the football open, give every sth a quick **** whilst going through the turnstiles, and the season ticket already has their details, don’t need fridges either because it’s -70 degrees in the ground at this the me of the year anyway.  What I do find odd is that how come the government can arrange for 20 odd million people to sign on the dotted line for their support but cant get everyone vaccinated in a few weeks.

I’m pretty sure that if a heroine addict can whack 2 or 3 needles in a vein every day, 90% of compus mentis  folk could manage it. I think the problem is from the ability to record the data.

Surely the people that are going into ICU should be having the vaccines or anyone that test's positive that is classed as vunerable no?

The vaccine simulates an attack of the virus and so trains the immune system by building antibodies in advance. There is no benefit in giving it to someone with virus as it’s then too late - they are under an actual attack.

Imagine if they paid people £100 for dobbing people breaking the rules in. Fine being paid by the person getting caught. 😂

Imagine if people weren’t afraid of actually giving other people bollockings for being knobs. Something I’ve just had to do to a lad and his hoes up the shop who were ripping the guy at the till for telling them they should have masks on.

It was always going to be the case, to expect everyone to strictly follow the rules would be naive.

The issue is for me, the lack of urgency to begin with, the lacklustre response has fed into the population. A bit like when a football crowd feed off a bad performance and start moaning and jeering.

Had they governments initial response been better, perhaps we would not be where we are now. It’s a known fact that the general population have been defying the rules, it was always going to be the case, people commit the smallest of crimes on a daily bases, so flogging the rules means nothing to some. Once you lose control of something it is very hard to get it back under control again without taking drastic measures I.E constant lockdowns.

Once a ships outer walls are damaged and water comes gushing in but the captain decides not to do anything initially she ship will start to sink, trying to repair a sinking ship is a near impossible task. In short, the government allowed the ship to start sinking, and are now desperately trying to fix it, but are fighting against a tide of disobedience and their own incompetence.

'The high street shed 177,000 jobs in 2020 according to a study that predicts an even more devastating toll on retail jobs this year, with a further 200,000 expected to be lost.

The job losses in what is the UK’s biggest private employment sector – with particular importance for women – illustrate the dramatic and permanent impact the pandemic will have on the shopping landscape.

The figure equates to 3,400 jobs lost every week in 2020, according to the new figures from the Centre for Retail Research (CRR) published on Friday. With Debenhams and Sir Philip Green’s Arcadia group among 2020’s high-profile casualties, the CRR described 2020 as one of the most troubled periods for the UK high street over the past 25 years.'

But isn’t it a case of just jabbing everyone asap. Where you’ve got 1000’s going for a test, isn’t it an ideal opportunity to vaccinate them at the same time, or is that too simplistic and we need to make a relatively simple operation complicated.....what us!!

It’s the aftermath I think people are concerned with. Generally if they’re a twat to begin with, with no regards to the law, then stereotypically speaking, they won’t think twice about attacking you or damaging your property.

Well you didn’t have to be Gypsy Rose Lee to predict this did you

Brings me back to my previous point that it’s going to take so much longer to resolve this shitty situation because 1. Too many people don’t give a toss and 2. There’s too little deterrent

The Brits are a such a laid-back/apathetic lot aren't we. You do realize that the actions of these people are having a huge effect on actually killing people.
Six of the fines were for holding a gathering of over 30 people. Over 30 fookin stupid people given the circumstances!
Broken Britain....

You mean chicken. All this talk of fining people isn’t a deterrent. Stick a couple of bouncers on the door of every shop and the issue of not wearing masks would no longer be an issue. How much would that actually cost, maybe a couple of million a day. There must be tons of them unemployed at the moment

Surely they could use the 1000s of military medics and nurses to set up vaccination centres like the current testing centres. Taking the workload away from the NHS and making the vaccinations available to everyone who needs one.

A bit harsh, some people just aren’t confrontational, or just can’t be arsed with the aftermath.

You’re not wrong about manning door though, although it would be difficult to do that on your local corner shop.

Whilst people rebel, these marginal infringements become more widely accepted and more and more people rebel.
