Left Back

Recommended Posts

I think unfortunately JJ is taking a lot of stick for starting for us because we didn't think we'd be in the position where he was having to start every game.

We signed him as back up for either full back slot and to develop him over time. He's been thrown in at the deep end and his inexperience has been apparent, but he doesn't look completely out of place and will get better.

Nobody was complaining until today.

Actually they were.  The left back position has been identified as a big weakness and teams are targeting Justin.

Justin is not yet Premier League ready.  He has been pressed into service due to injuries but he is a prospect that needs to adapt and develop and will become a great player imo but it is too early for him to be a regular starter.

We don't need to buy a new left back as OP suggests.  We've already done that - Tim Castagne.  Ricardo will play RB and Castagne will slot in on the left.  That gives us Justin, Fuchs and Thomas as cover.

As mentioned earlier though, if that's the case, why isn't Castagne playing left back already and Justin right back?

I don't know, both can cover either full back position.  Perhaps Castagne prefers the right, but when Ricardo gets back do you really think we will drop Castagne and continue with Justin?  or drop Ricardo?  Surely Castagne was signed to replace Chilwell otherwise it wouldn't make sense.

I don't think anyone would claim he's the best fullback at the club, but he's only filling in until Ricardo's fit. It's ridiculous to go overboard about his displays. He's been okayish, nothing more, nothing less.

Well exactly. I said earlier Castagne wasn't signed to play back up to Ricardo so all this talk of a new left back is pointless as we already have one. I just find it odd we're not playing him there if he's to move there long term. It'll help him build understanding with the likes of Barnes and Soyuncu down that side. And Justin is better at right back, so if we're confident enough in Castagne playing left back to have signed him to play there long term, then surely we must be happy to play him thete now?

Tellas is available for 19m go and get him

Right, and then who are you not playing when Ricardo and Castagne are both fit?

Why do we always have to make the left back the scapegoat?

He’s an adequate back up full back, which is what we bought him for, though one that’s still learning and will have some dodgy games. For the most part he’s done a good job.

I've asked two posters this when Sessegnon and Zinchenko were both suggested on loan and strangely they don't respond.

Firstly, he's a LB so he is already off to a better start than JJ.

Struggled at Fulham? I'm interested to know how you've reached that conclusion as he scored 20 goals with 10 assists in 70 games that led him to be signed for £24m...... Struggled? Really?

He's been unlucky with injuries at Spurs.

Developing him is where the "option to buy" would come in. It would actually be a really smart move in the sense of planning ahead. If Ricardo was to go next year, Castagne would move to RB and we would need a LB anyway....

(Doesn't really matter anyway  he's off to Hoffenhiem....... OFFENHIEM)

Those figures are from the championship. He has struggled in the premier league. It’s why Spurs chose to dish out £33m on a new LB this summer. Not saying he can’t fulfil that potential. However, it would be ridiculous of us to effectively give up on a young full back who has the odd mistake But has equally shown potential because of a lack patience. Then replace him with another young unproven expensive full back who we will need to be patient with. Combining the possible spend it would be around £33million plus. Why would we be more patient with Sessegnon then we evidently are not with Justin.

This is a good player with potential. Unless we can significantly upgrade there is no reason to give up on him so quickly.

And why would we sign a left back when we have Castagne and Ricardo? Nobody who is suggesting signing someone has answered that question yet.

I'm sure someone will have mentioned this but if Castagne is to be played as a LB once Ricardo is back.. why do we not put him there now and let Justin play his proper position...?

Mentioned it a few times. Genuinely baffling.

Because he is NOT A LB..... If we are going to push a young player currently in our squad it should be Thomas.

Also, it doesn't matter if it was the Championship. My point was that he clearly didn't "struggle" at Fulham like you said.

Nobody can answer it though. Its weird. We clearly signed Castagne as a long term left back, so why are not starting him there, when our other left back option is a converted right back. Its so confusing.

1 goal.

Which, if it was last season wouldn't have counted. Argubally a foul too.

Let's start with the chasing down of last week and starting the attacking for our second. Not to mention still pressing leading to the phase of play which Youri puts Castange in.

Or the penalty win at West Brom?

You'll find he was out muscled and out jumped (outjamp??) For both Burnley goals.

And if you want to mention the Man City game, let's mention when he was caught under the ball and instead of heading the ball out for another corner, he twisted his body to blindly flick the ball behind him where Mahrez was waiting to score....
