I haven't really followed his coaching career at all tbf, but as you say, should work well with McCullum.

Might be wrong but pretty sure he's only ever done franchise work as a head coach, but he played enough red ball didn't he

Not really sure what to make of Root being named captain.

Obviously he's got bags of experience and he's probably the best we have in terms of building for the 2027 Ashes but I would have preferred to have left him alone and built the team properly by giving the captaincy to someone who can be in the role for 5/6 years.

Can't help but think we're going to build a team specifically for the Ashes, not learn anything and be well beaten again.

I guess they didn't trust Brook to be ready for the test job yet or anyone else...

Which shows piss poor leadership and succession planning at the highest level.

England once again being shown up as the amateurs they are.

Crap call giving the captaincy back to Root. His record as test captain is shite.

Problem is the 2 players they probably ear-marked as future captains were Pope and Crawley and they both played themselves out the side.

Brook makes sense but it is a lot for him to do all 3, and he seems to getting on ok so far with the white ball.

I don’t think Brook should be handed the captaincy for all 3 rolls, whether he is squeeky clean off the pitch or not. It's simply too much for 1 skipper.

Root probably doesn't want it & it's a shame they're having to go back to him.

A bit left field, but was Duckett worth a punt ?

If people want a skipper who's a good captain and been in form then Kiran Carlson would be a good shout.

Failing that, it's genuinely Ben Stokes or no-one if you want that to be the criteria.

Disgusting imo that basically Key has said Stokes can return for the ashes next year.
So someone else can do really well from now to the start of the ashes but will be dropped for Mr Ego if he feels like returning to the test team.

I doubt they've spoken since his retirement. It's fairly common knowledge that Key is poor at communicating.

Key is probably guessing. Stokes is probably laughing.

You’re probably right but I do think Stokes will be back for the ashes.

Harsh on Stokes. How is he Mr Ego if he's not more bothered about doing his bit for Durham, rather than flouncing off to make daft cash on the franchise circuit?

I was referring specifically to his all about me in the second innings of the test against New Zealand when he decided it was all about him and decided to open the batting.

I don’t think that was entirely his decision. He passed it over to others to deal with the announcement.

Opening the batting was on McCullum to a large degree too.

I think, when balancing what you perceive of him, against how he's performed for England in amazingly difficult situations, won games almost single handedly, you're being fairly harsh.

All about opinions though.

I know it's not cool to enjoy anything about the hundred but jeez Mitch Marsh can hit a ball.

Nothing else on so giving it a watch. Apparently these are on track for the highest ever score

Thank god they've got rid of the stupid scorecard graphics, it used to take up half the screen.
