He couldn't wait to get away from Barry Fry's Birmingham City and when he I arrived I recall the assurance that once his thyroid was sorted he'd do the job...and he was true to his word. O'Neill was very good at recognising and recruiting players with a point to prove.

I hope he has overcome his gambling addiction.

Honestly thought he'd died and braced myself opening the thread. All good and THAT goal...pure beauty

It was the article in the paper that triggered the thread. I'd almost forgotten what a cult hero he was.

One of those moments where time seemed to stand still.

It did. It seemed like slow motion as the ball went in and it was only when it hit the net and bounced down when the crowd seemed to realise it was a goal, went ballistic. I think it must have been similar in the commentary box judging by his surprise.

I remember when Kalac came on the chap next to me went into a mini meltdown. I told him not to worry as he wouldn’t be needed. Seconds later he was gripping hold of my shirt with both hands screaming in my face “you were right, you were right” as if I was some sort of profit lol

I remember an interview with Parker some time (years) after the match where he said he’d asked the ref how long was left, the ref said that’s about it so Parker asked him to just give it long enough to see what happens from the free kick. :scarf:

Him and marshal up front, probably the scruffiest pairing the premier league has ever seen!

I absolute loved Ian Marshall. Literally the unfittest footballer I've ever seen but technically he was magnificent

Many years ago a mate of mine had a job door to door selling for a little while. Knocked on one door and Ian Marshall opened the door, my mate goes “Ian, Ian” in surprise (as in his song). Anyway he spent about ten minutes talking City before making his good byes forgetting he was there to sell him something. As he left Marshall said what are you selling anyway, I’ll buy a couple.

Haha what a hero

When he scored THAT goal I ended up four rows away from where I started celebrating and I lost my spectacles.

I remember the train back up was quieter than expected.  We were all so knackered. So drained.

I got my second wind arriving back in Leicester, but I got knocked back at the pub I tried to get into, because I was still quite drunk and my face was painted blue and I looked a bit "dishevelled".  lol

For that reason, and that goal, Claridge gets a lifetime free pass.  :scarf:

Always read that there was disbelief that Kalac was coming on but surely not from our fans?

It had been mentioned several times in the week leading up that he would likely come on if we were heading to penalties. Remember discussing it with my parents at the beginning of Extra-Time and all of us grimacing at the thought.

Who else missed it as they were too busy watching spider Kalac run into the goalmouth ?

I was watching Spider in his goalmouth as well, but the free kick went across my line of vision, so realising the game had restarted, I frantically tried to find the ball... catching up with it just as it landed at Super Steve's foot. I was directly in line with the shot, so as it went straight from his foot into the net, I could have sworn he was 5-10 yards out!

I'd interrupted my holiday to get to Wembley, so didn't know where he'd actually hit it from until watching it back days later!

The most disappointing thing about the whole game happened a couple of years ago. I had an assistant at work who was maybe 10 years younger than me, and a big Palace fan.

After another shocking home loss to them, to make myself feel better, I was telling him about this game and bringing it up on YouTube to show him... And he was completely unaware of it!

It was such a seismic moment, Palace fans for generations should still be scarred by it...

... and if was like it was just stuff that had happened to other people! I still feel a little crushed thinking about it now. :(

So relieved that story had a happy ending. At the start I was worried it was going to be a story about Marshall being a knob! Good to know he is clearly as good a bloke as he has always seemed to me.

Worked so well because the defenders were scared of catching scabies from there pair, fair play.

Comes across as not being that fond of us since he left?

He seemed to take really badly to Sven being appointed. I think he was mainly positive about Pearson, haven't heard much from him in years.

He's spoken about us very fondly quite a few times hasn't he?

A quick Google pulls up a few interviews where he's glowing about us.

I’ve always thought Claridge speaks well about us too.

Whenever I've been in his company he's always talked extremely fondly about Leicester. Pretty sure he did the same on radio/TV too.

As well as the other goals mentioned was the one when he returned to our place with Millwall and scored after 15 seconds or something. Over 30,000 in and all you could hear was the Millwall players celebrating as the away fans had been banned. We scored 4 in reply so it was alright in the end.

He scored but didn't celebrate. Got a feeling our fans applauded him - even though he'd just scored against us!

Who ate all the pies Marshall. What a character! Even I look more like a footballer than him. But he was great.

He was unreal. His first goal against Derby, volley against Everton and first time strike at a field are all unreal strikes. And everytime he runs off like an oap who's nicked an extra rice pudding at tea

Some may have done after the initial shock but you could hear the Millwall players (not Stevie, probably) from the North (or Family or Lineker whatever its called) end.
