Most of our recruitment was focused at this level. It's far easier to sign at this level. The 23s level they're all pros and would cost £££.

I wholeheartedly agree that that's the shrewd play, but there's an inevitability that signing 16+ year olds that are a level above what we've tended to scrabble about for previously, ought to go straight in to the U23's and none of them have bar Brad Young.

There's a few in the 23s. Braybrooke, Marcal, Nelson - all very good. Jethro too. And Alves is in the mix now.

Popov and Grist will be next. There's more at 15/16 age too.

Does look good. Kian Pennant is ticking along nicely too.

A lot of these lads are gonna make it, whether it be with us or someone else but it’s a clear sign of progression from previous crops! The technical ability of these lads is above anything we’ve produced before for me.

Which youngsters would you like to see on the bench in European games?

It’s not gonna happen, not worth the risk. We’ve got a big enough squad to deal with demands of all competitions just waiting for some to get back fit

With owning OHL surprised we’ve not snapped up some young Belgians

Transfer rules make that much harder now, unless we leave them at OHL for a few years.

It is a pain to sign young European players now, pretty much can only get players from Europe if they are playing regular first team football

...it would be best to progress them through OHL than to bring them across to the UK!!!

I would have thought the remit was to develop OHL into a team who could eventually compete in European competition. We (Leicester) should not be competing with them for the talent in their league, they are a separate entity.

Looking at the performances of OHL they need to bring in more quality and need to develop away from our need to fill our academy.

In the development thread, my question was better than your response.

Just think about it for this season considering the pressured situation we’re in for the competition after our first two games! Your question isn’t logical!

It's a theoretical situation question on the development thread!   There are people who will read the question who will know a lot more about development players than me who might give an interesting response (this is a football forum).  I suspect you have no idea.

Thanawat Suengchitthawon is currently away with Thailand Under 23s in Mongolia as they begin their Asian Cup Qualifying campaign

He captained the side and got an assist in a 1-1 draw with Mongolia today

They will be playing against Laos on Thursday

Go to 35 seconds to see his assist

Bright future. Don’t think he’ll make it here but definitely got a good future in the game

I wouldn't be surprised at all if he turns up at Leuven if/when he leaves us, just to try and keep him in the “King Power system” for a bit longer

No doubt Top and King Power will be happy they have brought through a decent looking young Thai player who will probably rack up plenty of appearances for the National Team in the future

Will have a look later at how Work Permits work for young Thai players still in Thailand such as Mueanta, hopefully they would still be able to rack up enough points to be able to join us

they league they play in plays a big part in that now doesn't it? sign them and get them loans to qualifying leagues

Yeah, any player we sign now from outside of the UK has to be playing the majority of games whatever league they are in to have a chance to get a work permit, however even if they are playing a lot of games but are in a poor league, they still can’t get a work permit

It is now actually easier to buy good young players from South America because of how many points towards a work permit they can rack up from playing in the South American Champions League

If a player can’t get a work permit it can still got to arbitration where a club can make a case as to why they would benefit English football, like we had to do with Kramaric, but the exact criteria for how they prove it hasn’t exactly been shown anywhere

Every season, a member of the Recruitment team goes out to Thailand for a few weeks, when they have many of the best teams and players from Thailand essentially in for a big trial, and play in front of the LCFC Recruiter.

On this basis the Thai Academy side is put together each season. They are schooled at Ratcliffe Collage, & they play games at the training ground against other regional youth sides, and usually do very well, that however doesn't always translate into a professional player, but they aren't a shabby bunch either. Thanawat Suengchitthawon is the best Thai player they have helped produce since this project started, although he did not come through the trails system.

Manchester City: Finding the next Phil Foden - Micah Richards on getting to the top

Extract

The difference is, I got a proper chance'

It was easier when I was coming through at City, at a time when the club did not have much money to spend on players. There was a reason they were renowned for bringing youngsters through the ranks and into the first team - they needed us, basically.

From 1998, when the City academy opened, until the Abu Dhabi takeover in 2008, 26 players went from the youth team to the first team, and 20 of us started at least one competitive match.

If you look at the number of academy players who made their senior debut for City between 2008 and the start of this season there are 44, which seems pretty good on paper, with 32 of them starting a game.

But dig a little deeper and only 16 made more than one start, and so far only four players have made more than 20, including Foden, who leads by a long way with 74.

Compare that to my day, when only three of the 20 players were given just one start. Eight of us made more than 20 and, between us, we made a total of 998 starts for City alone, compared to only 212 from those that have followed.

Having a small squad meant we got a proper chance and having a bad game was not the end for us, but it is a different story now.
