You lot have always been a good source of advice. Airbnb host is wanting £139 for damage to a bed. 1 person slept 1 night in it and noticed nothing wrong.

Have they made any suggestion that you were in some way misbehaving?  You aren't liable if you get into bed in the normal way, with the correct number of persons per bed, and the bed breaks.  That's wear and tear.  The tenant is only responsible for damage caused by the tenant's actions, such as dropping something or using something wrongly.

If this was reasonable, the next step would be to ask the tenant to pay because the gas boiler stopped working or because the drive had a pothole or because the double glazed windows had condensation.  If it's not your fault, you don't have to pay.

I can't see how it's your fault that a bed slat breaks if it's only 1 person on it acting normally and not jumping on it or bouncing around.

Also don't get how it's that expensive.

Probably broken well before your stay and now they've just picked you to charge it back on.

I don't know the specific rules but would they have to prove that it was you who broke it? Or is it up to you to prove it wasn't you? (how you'd go about that I'm not sure).

Thanks all. I've refused his demand and said I am sorry for his issue, but a broken slat is not unusual. The bed was slept on normally by 1 slim guy for 1 night. We will not be paying anything.

Stick to your guns defo don’t pay, I run a cleaning company in Pembrokeshire and deal with holiday let’s, I’m pretty certain that this is covered on there insurance anyhow which they have got to have in order to rent out, you could check that out if his demands persist, while I’m here any supporters of our great club in the Pembroke Dock area?

Send them a bill for the inconvenience and wasting your time.

I reckon £139 should cover it

If I end up having to talk to an Airbnb mediator this is exactly what I'll say, thanks. I bet I dont hear anything now though. It will be going in my review and I might even post a bill for £139 for the trouble to him. I am that petty.

Mediator involved now, the ****ing cheek of this cvnt. I've replied with basically what @dsr-burnley said.

just don't back down. My wife when on a hen do and stopped at an AirBnB one of the girls got fake tan on a bed sheet. They told the bloke and offered to buy a new one for him he said dont worry about it its fine. 2 days later they got a message saying he wanted £100 for the cost and his inconvenience!

AirBnB tend to stick up for you rather than their hosts to be fair they didnt pay a penny. If you do end up having to pay for anything just put it in here with the link and i'm sure a few of us will write the host a nice review ;) £140 could end up ruining his business.

Airbnb have sided with him and are saying I have to pay £136.22. lol

Just unbelievable. I'll have to just delete my account I guess.

How much would the slat actually cost?!? 😂

They tried to take payment, but I had already deleted my payment info. I responded with my original argument stating we did not use the bed abnormally and that we would not be paying £136 for a slat. Airbnb responded saying they understood our position and will not be pursuing the money further. They will however be leaving a note on my account but I am free to use Airbnb as normal.

I responded saying I will exclusively be using their competitors from now on and have permanently deleted my account. **** em. 🙂

Good on you mate. As with all these kind of app services there’s loads of competitors popping up offering identical services, no need to get bent over for this kind of shite.

Who else offers similar to Airbnb? I’ll happily use a competitor if I can save money

Vrbo is the most significant I believe.
