Having seen quite a lot of his matches, I'm pretty sure sure that he would hold his own in the PL and frankly I'm baffled that people think that a player considered by his peers to be up with the greatest, if not the greatest, wouldn't be able to cope in any league he'd play in. Aside from his skills and a very high footballing IQ, people tend underestimate his strength and how many times he gets roughed up, ganged on, yet still stay up and do his Messi things. So unless one goes in flying with the intent of breaking his legs, he'll do just fine. Even at 34. If he doesn't want to come here, it's certainly not because he doesn't fancy his chances imo.

And as far as I remember players like D.Silva, S.Aguero, B.Silva or Mahrez aren't built like units,

Yes, without a shadow of a doubt.

I think he’d be great and in my opinion he is the greatest ever.

Going to Ligue 1 when he’s going to potentially still got miles in the tank, feels a waste.

On that I fully agree with you.

This news conference is bizarre.

Couldn't Messi stay and play for free if he really wanted to for a season until they try to resolve their financial situation?

The guy is worth £500 million ffs and alot of that was generated from the help of Barca.

Wouldn't matter. Even without him the salary mass represents 95% of the club's revenue and they still have to either offload players or renegotiate contracts to register their new players. They're in a financial mess of astronomical proportions.

He's the best player on the planet. One out of 7Bn. Why should he play for free?

He's greedy I'm sorry that's the truth. He's not someone who depends on football to live even more. He could literally never kick a ball again and be more than fine. It's complete and utter greed. Play for 20k a week. And barca aren't victims, they've been doing this to themselves ane also they have helped to bankrupt and destroy other clubs. They voted to send down sevilla in the 90s for example. I feel 0 sympathy for him or barca. He's a great player but ehh why should i feel sorry? And I'm hoping barva ruin themselves even more. Can't stand them or madrid

Absolutely, and if he was to play for free, he would probably still make millions each week from external advertising alone. Big brands will be paying him mega bills before you even look at his Barcelona pay cheque.

You go to your job for free then lol

Thing is he makes money just off of endorsements, shoes, interviews, whatever that would be sufficient for thousands of years. It's greed. If you love it so much put your money where your mouth is

I don't get why people feel sorry for him? I don't think he should play for free or anything but I struggle to have sympathy for someone who has received ridiculous wages for years and now expects the club to receive help to pay for him.

It’s bizarre.

I almost feel like he’s playing the victim.

If he didn’t pick up a wage from Barcelona, he’d still be making millions upon millions from branding, image rights etc.

La Liga lose by letting him leave, as they no longer have a poster boy. The worlds elite players, aren’t playing in Spain. However, what they’re doing by forcing clubs to cut wages, should be a long term benefit overall.

Madrid and Barcelona have got themselves into this mess by years of leaving beyond means and being bailed out. Now the taps have been turned off due to the financial impact of COVID 19, they’ll be in for a torrid time.

They've still got to shift €100,000,000 just to register the likes of Depay and Aguerro etc. You could say that they’ve largely made a mistake agreeing contracts with these players, without clearing out first. They’re in that much of a mess. The longer this goes on and the closer to the end of the transfer window we get, they’ll practically be wanting to give players away just to have a squad which is capable of competing.

Where do you shift the likes of Lenglet, Puig, Pjanic, Countinho, Dembele and Brithwaite. Outside of the Premier League, PSG aside, they football is crippled and can’t afford the wages that these players are being paid.

This is why they tried to force the Super league through, as this was the lifeline they needed. It wasn’t just about being scared of the growing financial power of the Premier League and it’s dominance, they needed it to largely survive.

Messi may well end up at PSG, however it’s a one team league and like Ronaldinho, Zlatan, Cavani, Neymar and Mbappe, people will watch with anticipation to begin with, before the eyes are drawn back to the Premier League as it’s competitive. Who wants to watch PSG put 4 or 5 past someone every week? It becomes boring. Outside of the UCL, they’ll largely be a 2nd viewing once the intrigue has gone.

If he comes to England or Germany and doesn’t play for Manchester City Or Bayern Munich, he could, could cement himself as the greatest ever, proving once and for all; ending the debate that he’s better than Ronaldo.

At the moment, Messi hasn’t dragged a team through to triumph, like Ronaldo did with Portugal. Imagine him, turning out for a Manchester United, Dortmund, Leipzig or even Leicester. If he achieved success with a club on that level, it would be akin to what Maradona did with Napoli.

They still can't register him even if playing for free.

Would somebody who’s the absolute best at another profession be expected to do their job without picking up a wage? Does seem a bit weird to suggest that

I don't think anyone is suggesting that. He's a multimillionaire though, and has more money that he can possibly have dreamt of, not just from Barca wage packet, but his sponsorship deals. He sat their crying because he's leaving the club he "loves" but if he really loves them, he'd at least take a pay cut to play for them.

If I had a much money as he has, I'd play for Leicester for free, I'd might even pay them to let me play lol

He's not a normal person earning a modest wages, so your comparison doesn't stand up. And often those people often do give their time and expertise for nothing.

But he’s entitled to a wage to do his job like anyone is

Honestly dont care.

Messi's wages are part of the reason why barca are where they are. I cant fault him for taking what was offered to him all those years but stupid spending has finally come back to haunt them and for good reason. Play and pay within your means. Salary caps ARE needed in football to protect all clubs, even the tw@t clubs.

Enjoy mediocrity for awhile like 95% of other spanish clubs have been in your dominance.

Messi can walk away stankarse rich or play for psg etc. But he wont get the kind of wage barca gave him. Poor sod.

Barcelona have paid Messi hundreds of millions, if not touching over a billion, over the course of the 17 years he's been there.

If he loves the club so much, he could do a season or two for free,  no doubt about it.

It's not like he wouldn't be earning. The sponsorship deals alone will pay handsomely.

Maybe he hasn't been happy at Barcelona lately and this is his ticket to escape whilst still holding a god like status there.

I certainly think he could play for free and still rake in millions of pounds.

I'm amazed at those saying they don't care about it or don't comprehend why he's emotional.

Imagine Vardy doing this - been here nearly 10 years, plucked out of non-league and we gave him his big break. There's bound to be emotion when he leaves (not saying he'll be given a press conference like this) but imagine if we couldn't get a contract agreed because the PL stepped in and refused it. And then he had to leave the club that made him and where he gained so much stardom and success. Would we be telling Vardy to play on for free?
