God our pacers look really really slow

They keep talking about Archer and Stone - as if we were relying on them to be fit and provide pace but that is a long long way off!

No guarantees, but limit Australia to a 50 lead and we may be in with a shout. Any more than that, I don't hold out any hope.

Agreed.

The Ashes (at least this part of it) rest on the next couple of hours.

England simply aren't going to find out how this Australian team would fare when they bat under pressure.

Cricket is an easy game when you're always ahead on the scoreboard.

Clearly it's difficult times, but the planning has to be highlighted again. That said, England simply don't have good enough test batsmen and no amount of planning can change that.

Doesn't help picking players who don't even have decent figures in the County Championship

No amount of planning for the tour can change it but planning to bring through batsmen capable of playing at Test level is non-existent.

The batting lineup in the mid-90s was famously brittle but it was full of players who either had talent and flattered to deceive (Hick, Ramprakash) or were actually gritty if not exactly elite players (Atherton, Stewart, Thorpe).

This batting lineup (with Root and Stokes honourable exceptions) has the magic mix of no talent and no application.

Christ almighty this is the most embarrassing part of the most embarrassing series to date.

Reading the report I was getting excited, should have known better.

Will Root publicly slag the bowlers off again?
