Since when did drivers care so much about coming 2nd in the championship?

Still, needless from Max when he gains very very little by coming 6th and not 7th.

Yup I thought this, especially leclerc pleading to swap with sainz in 3rd to get second overall. That was never going to happen

I guess they're two drivers who have never finished that high up the standings before, but yeah it is a bit weird. Furthermore though I don't think Red Bull would leave Verstappen out on mediums like they did with Perez at the last SC yesterday. It's pretty unusual to see a Red Bull on the wrong tyres, they're usually good with strategy like that and he'd have dropped to 4th at worst by doing so?

Seems the Dutch press are going all in on defending him saying that Perez crashed deliberately in Monaco to deny Max pole.

If that's genuinely his reason then he's an even bigger ****, if that's somehow possible.

I'd have let my teammate through just to keep them sweet.

Stewards said Max was carrying excessive speed which is the reason I thought the penalty might have gone Max's way. Given they can look at the telemetry and compare with previous laps.

Very happy for George. Fantastic weekend for the Mercs. Only downside was that late safety car helped Ferrari into a 3rd/4th. 19 points between them going into Abu Dhabi tho I assume Ferrari would win on a tie due to more 1st's.

That's crazy because I thought only the British media was biased

And actually in defence of Perez, a 2nd place finish in the championship is the equivalent of winning the thing while he's in the same team as Max. Next year with Merc finding their feet and Ferrari still a threat, is this opportunity going to be there for him again?

You have to be v single minded to succeed in F1.

im not at all surprised that a winner like verstappen has behaved in this way - he considers that the no 2 driver is there to support him.

if you want a winner then you often have to put up with what comes with that.

Agree to a point but Checo has supported Max so much, bad sportsmanship.

Bad sportsmanship - I’m afraid winners often don’t care.

of course it’s great when you get someone who can do both but then some would argue that if those people showed less sportsmanship, they would win even more …..

But what was there to gain from Max's point of view? Nothing. He's already won the WC.

Counter to that is when he inevitably relies on Sergio to get out the way or slow up a Merc/Ferrari next year he might not get the help he needs. Normally I'd agree he needs to ruthless, but that was illogical, stupid and likely detrimental to his future success.

It's an interesting point that highlights the difference between him, Lewis and Schumacher. Max for me is the fastest I've ever seen on a track but seems to lack that ice cold logic and intelligence that Lewis and MSC had (not so much MSC as he was fairly ruthless).  Guess it's the emotion and pure pace that makes Max such an amazing driver yet remain generally unpopular.

Max is overrated. He tried to bottle the title so badly last season that the FIA had to break the rules to get him the championship they so desperately wanted him to have.

I want to see a bit more longevity and close title races before I put him up there with the best. RBR have always had a no1/no2 approach and they made Seb Vettel look like superman as well.

He reminds me of a younger Seb, aggressive sometimes foolhardy decision making in close quarters and a big ego. Looks untouchable in a car that is the class of the field.

Being fast helps when your team are cheats and you have the support of the stewards. He isn’t the fastest just the luckiest

Sure Red Bull will be delighted with Verstappen basically suggesting Perez crashed on purpose in qualifying to gain an advantage  on him at Monaco !

'Imagine being told you are the best and will be the greatest from being young. Then when you finally get what you think the world owes you. You go to bed every night knowing that you didn’t really win, but circumstances were manufactured to gift you the win.
Then you get the chance to win another title* that one is tainted by your team cheating.

It’s got to grate and impact on a person mentally knowing deep down you don’t really deserve the titles. '
