How? There is still like 7/8/9 clubs in England richer than us.

We are 7th in terms of revinue generated in England and 15th in the world.

Should put paid to the 'overachieving' narrative. We're achieving in line and, this season, below.

We weren't even in the top 20 when we finish 5th in 2019/20.

For this reporting period we 7th and finished 5th.

So not really.

Anytime we finish above any of the big 6 we are over achieving if you are using this as a metric.

So by finishing 5th twice and winning the FA Cup (beating the European champions) we overachieved then.

Yes, still a little disappointed with the x2 collapses from 3rd to 5th on the last weeks of each seasons, but in terms of expectations correlated against revenue, an overachievement. 👍🏼

I don't think anyone is not disappointed to some extent. Just don't like seeing it used as a hammer to beat the players, manager and club over and over.

I think, if we are collectively willing to accept the financial facts, that we overachieved on the field in comparison with revenue generated for the last 2 seasons, then we must be fair in the reverse, when results on the field are not what they were.

Also to be clear, I personally have never critisised the majority of the squad. Just the very poor performing players, who consistently are not at the standard, when compared to the rest of the team. Those players have been Bertrand and Vestergaard in the main.

Should be noted that while we're 7th in terms of English clubs, we're miles behind Spurs.

Our wage budget isn't miles behind their's though, Spurs' was £205m last year and ours was £192m.  A lot of bloat in our squad

A measure of sustainability is percentage wage costs versus revenue. I’ve not looked recently, but I believe ours is one of the worst and Spurs is one of the best - if not the best in the league. Their potential is still far greater than ours in terms of financial flexibility they just choose not to use it

That's still about 3x 80-100k a week players extra on their wage bill, though.

...or Rodgers' & Co's wages. We're far closer to Spurs' wage bill than we are West Ham's. Some of this is a result of bonuses but even so it's extraordinary what we're spending given we have about 15 or 16 good players.

Not to do with us but its mental when you think that after Everton’s accounts were revealed yesterday their wages are at £183m…

I'd imagine Everton might be a bit more creative with their accounting than us but is shows how decadent our wage bill is. Average wage is £92k pw, which is only going to be worse for this year's accounts with Vestergaard, Bertrand, Soumare and a few new deals added in.

Say Danny Ward is on 30k p/w, with wages and fees each appearance has cost us roughly £1,010,000. Mendy got a new deal in the summer and we didn't register him in the squad. We trumped the big 6 because we didn't fall into the spend, spend, spend trap but we're getting there now.

I think Mendy's current contract was signed in 2020.

With all this money can we buy Rennes another wheelie bin for the away dressing room.

I'm still upset by those shocking scenes which will haunt me forever.

Brighton are a very well run club aren’t they. Always feel they aren’t far from a big season, they scout well and I think if they’d just secure a top striker they could really put a good side together.

Basically the TV money is where we make our money. The commercial aspect is a bit pants comparatively and perhaps this is where we are look at growth. It's hard when you're a club outside of the North West or London

Especially when they went from mid-table to those finishes, in the first instance. That's a big step up.
