Tbh I think we put too much on this role since the holy trinity, if you think since Walsh we've still continued to recruit really well and that seems a testament to how good our scouting network is rather than the head of the role.

If the recent signings from the Saints are any measure - Puel, Vesta, Bertrand it will be very underwhelming.

Tbf Bertrand was actually good for Southampton, his legs have just gone

Track record will play a part but surely this is the kind of role you tend to get better at with age rather than worse. His recent Saints signings are decent and we'll obviously have our own networks and priorities in place. All clubs will have hit and miss signings whoever they are, even those who perceived to be very good at what they do.

Glover has been head of recruitment at Southampton since 2019, in that time the club has not progressed.

I can't name 1 player who he has brought to the club that has improved their own reputation significantly

Southampton had the 2nd worse defence in the league last season,

We've now signed half their back 4 and their Head of Recruitment

Can't say I am optimistic

The consensus view I heard was that Walsh took an awful lot of credit for the background work of an extremely good setup - I've banged the drum a lot but the club's technical scouting has been first class for a long time and it pre-dates even MacKenzie. Walsh left and didn't take Waldron with him, but even when Macia did, the next lot continued the right processes. Callum Smithson was an intern in the title winning season and is now head of that department. The processes continue in that regard and we continue to recruit sensibly if those people are listened to.

You have the traditional scouts - Glover is probably one of those, along with others we employ - Philippe Pelluault is one Congerton brought in, others include Sean St. Ledger who does part-time bits, there are a few other names of more permanent scouts that do the rounds. Strong recommendations from them, along with the statistical approach, and you tend to all be singing off the same hymn sheet and interested in signing a player.

At Everton Walsh was given free reign to do what he wanted, and seemingly sidelined a lot of good background work in going for players off his own list. Whelan and Rudkin have proved time and again that nobody comes into any job role at LCFC and has freedom to do whatever they like. Rodgers has perhaps steered the closest to that with his staff appointments and supposed pushing for Vestergaard and Bertrand, but let's be clear - the fact a) his head of medicine Bryan English is leaving and b) Martyn Glover is not a Rodgers crony, say to me that the club have wrestled back a little bit of that control and we will see a return to the typical sound structure that has got us to where we are.

You’re absolutely spot on with this.

Over the last 10 years Rudkin as DOF has built a recruitment department that has been such a well oiled machine that it’s never really felt the loss of the people that have left. Whether that’s Walsh or Macia or Congerton as head of recruitment… or Waldron or MacKenzie as analysts. The philosophy and way of doing things always stays the same.

If Rudkin sees Glover as the next cog in our successful machine then I’m behind it.

It can only be a good thing that he’s Rudkin man and not Brendan’s too.

Did he scout vestergaard and Bertrand

Serious note uninspired by the lads he’s taken to Southampton. Che adams and Adam Armstrong as an example.

he may have been part of the decision to let them go…. get him in!

I must admit on first glance i got excited we were getting the guy responsible for signing virgil and mane

sunderland aside i’d say that’s pretty encouraging.

The fact that he was also part of keeping a club the size of blackburn (with their budget)  in the prem for so long is also a huge credit.

You've had an absolute howler here son

So we beat a team 9 nil and decide to buy half their defence. We then trump that by employing the guy that potentially recruited them. Sounds like a plan. In fairness, I don't know who's signings he's particularly responsible for having input into but I don't see any standout recruitment at Southampton during his tenure either.

Hopefully he follows what he's done getting Livramento and Broja to Southampton by getting us Omari Hutchinson from Arsenal and Colwill from Chelsea.

One is a loan and one is essentially a long term loan… I’m not sure how much I’d say they’re “great moves” Saints are essentially just looking after some young talent lol

Would love it if we raided Chelsea’s youth academy. Colwill is the obvious standout, but there’s also Maatsen who is currently on loan at Coventry and doing very well.

We seem to be linked with fullbacks and Maatsen might fancy a move as he’s not getting ahead of Chilwell/Alonso.

Could be a good alternative to Yilmaz.

Well he won't be negotiating the terms of the transfers but I've long wanted us to try and tap in to the disillusion of talented young academy players at big clubs, was pleased we were actively trying to pursue James McAtee before Man City managed to convince him to stay.

This is exactly what we should be targeting. A lot of these players are ready honed for the premier leagues but just won’t get game time. McAtee would have been great. Tommy Doyle from Man City. Gallacher will be too expensive now but there are many others.
