Rodgers opens up on Leicester City transfer struggles but 'won't go to war' with club

The season is not defined by the transfer window. With our squad at full fitness and no europe we should be aiming for a top 6 finish.

We might aim for it, but if that’s the fans expectation then it’s ridiculous.

The clubs above us have at least twice our turnover and have all strengthened significantly whilst we’ve stood still. Teams around us have been more active and then there is the unknown of Newcastle. It’s not just about new faces, but it’s fairly well known that new arrivals bring a new perspective and an uptick in effort.

Yes, let’s aim for sixth, but I reckon anything above half-way isn’t a bad season unless we shake up the squad a bit in these next few weeks

For the frist time since we won the league I feel we are now being left behind in terms of the squad.  We had horrendous shortcomings last season that arent going to magically fix themselves this season.  We havent gotten anyone in, and we cant shift out the over paid players we shouldnt have signed in the first place.  To me, and I'm fine with it as we are who we are, but we are now just one of the dozen teams each season that could equally finish 8th as we could 17th.  We probably are too good to go down, but no where near good enough to challenge for the European spots again.

Personally, I think Rodgers will walk before hes pushed.  He says hes non plussed about the fact the club has gone stagnant, but he wont want a sacking to his name either when he has his own aspirations as a manager.  Whether thats beneficial to the club in the long term who knows.

I think it's a fair comment tbh and nothing we didn't already know.  I'll be honest and say I expected the futures of both soyuncu and tielemans to be sorted one way or another by now. And that's not even including the other players in the squad we would like to shift.

Id also like to think with some added strength Brendan would have been aiming to disrupt the big 6 again. We won't be too far from that I don't think but the amount of fans wetting themselves over other clubs strengthening, there is an element of that too.

Realistically, when when little Wes got injured last year, with the European games too, we needed an extra CB we hadnt budgeted for. It's that signing of vestry that's really pushed us over the edge this year, what's worse is it's not worked out and it's another player we want rid off.

I dunno why I'm bothering with all this, the haters will hate regardless of what he says

This was pretty much my take too, and Wes was a disaster but didn’t warrant a Vestergaard on its own, but the uncertainty over Jonny was equally as concerning, so for that I saw the reasoning of Jannick at the time. Obviously, hindsight tells me I am a dick, but….

He can’t really complain. He wanted Perez (£30 million fee and £70k+ p/w), Praet (£15+ million fee and £60k+ p/w) Vestergaard (£12 million fee and £60k+ p/w) and Bertrand (considerable signing on fee and £70k+ p/w)

Other than Praet who I think could definitely still do a job for us moving forwards, that’s a lot of ****ing money wasted by Brendan and Congerton.

I truly will never understand the Bertrand transfer. We have Thomas Justin and Castagne. Why the hell would you sign an old shit left back on £70k a week?! I appreciate injuries etc that is no excuse. Seems extremely dodgy.

Do you think Brendan is blameless for our squad being in the state it is? The majority of our best players still in our squad weren't signed when Rodgers was in charge. We've had some terrible transfer windows recently and that is why we are in this mess. Whether its Rodgers or the recruitment team or both, it's still down to Rodgers as he brought congerton to the club. He's been here 3 years which is more than enough time to shape a squad. Of course there is the argument that our owners don't spend compared to others but we have made some dreadful decisions in the transfer market since Rodgers has been at the club

Rubbish, that’s utter tripe and if you don’t realise it you are a lost cause . Riodgers does not run the club, don’t be so childish.

He can't go to war with the club as its his and Congertons shite recruitment that has left us in this mess. The likes of Vestergaard, Bertrand and Soumare clogging up our wage bill and none of them are anywhere near good enough to be in our squad and surprise surprise, nobody wants them meaning we can't trim our squad and lower our wage bill. He's had 3 years at the club now which is more than enough time for him and his recruitment team to have the squad he wants, yet we are currently a long way off having the squad he wants. Yes we don't have an owner like Villa or Newcastle that will spend hundreds of millions of their own cash but our transfer model we've adopted since we won the league has worked for the most part, signing cheap and selling for huge profit. Seems that model has now come to an end and some of our star players like youri will either be sold for way below their value or leave on frees. The club seems like its in a real mess and I can't help but feel that Rodgers is a large reason for that.

Squads are ever evolving, a squad his was happy with a year ago he might not be now due to ageing  players, players wanting out, players going stale, contracts running down etc etc.

No, that I totally get, more that the majority want him gone thing

From the circles of supporters I know it feels that way. Most wanted him gone by various points last season.

Why so defensive? Are you Brendan or are you related to him? I was just having a discussion and giving my viewpoint whilst asking you questions on yours. If you can't have a civil discussion/conversation then maybe stay away from this forum. For the record I'm not a "brendan hater" I just think he shouldn't throw stones in a glass house.

Yeh agreed. Poor signings recently have not helped the situation though. Last summer was a disaster! Only Daka seems like he may come good. The rest were an absolute shit show!

We've won the Prem an FA Cup, community shield and sampled Champions League and Europa league football in last 7 years. The owners owe the fans nothing.

However, it's clear we have reached our maximum and sadly things will more than likely peter off now. As to what extent who knows but watching big/shrewd investment around us is the biggest indicator we are now miles away.

Vardy, Kasper and Evans are all outstanding pro's at the end of their careers but none have any meaningful resale value and all will need replacing come next May latest.

So then you look at the likes of Fofana, Barnes and Madders to generate large transfer fees but you lose their quality's and likely struggle to match it elsewhere.

The club are in a very difficult position and sadly on paper you can't see how they can overturn it without damaging its ability to comfortably remain in the Prem. Will Top turn to further investment elsewhere?

As I said the other day we're (the club) writing this coming season off before it's even begun.

Never felt such disconnect, disinterest and lack of passion for it all and how we play, something I just can't get behind, I hate it whilst not caring at the same time (the fact I don't care is what I hate).

We’ve well and truly messed things up on the wage front by the looks of things, we have ten players out of contract next summer, with eight of them more than likely to leave.

We can’t afford to let all those eight players leave on a free, but if we have no takers for them, then unfortunately that will end up being the case.

Tielemans & Soyuncu will surely have takers at some point, but if we can’t even shift them and they won’t sign new contracts, letting those two leave on a free especially could be a disaster.

Ideally we have to hope somebody gullible enough will come in for Perez and Vestergaard(despite him having two years on his contract), while hopefully we can shift one of Mendy or Choudhury too, with the other leaving on a free next summer. Soumare leaving on loan seems the only viable move atm, he wouldn’t need replacing with a permanent signing.

I think we can afford to let Schmeichel, Amartey, Bertrand and one of Mendy or Choudhury to leave on frees next summer. It’s the trio of Tielemans, Soyuncu & Perez that need shifting the most, especially if the first two won’t sign new contracts, while we seriously pray that somebody stupid enough spends money on Vestergaard.

If those things don’t work out, then things could get seriously messy at our football club.

How am I deriding him? I've just said I don't feel he's totally blameless for the squad being the way it is? Do you honestly believe it was just coincidence that the club brought in Rodgers' head of recruitment from celtic? Do you believe Rodgers had no input on that decision and Top/Rudkin just decided to get celtics head of recruitment? And do you honestly believe Rodgers has no input on transfers at the club? You believe he had no say in Bertrand and Vestergaard? I have no connections to the club like 99% of people on here, so yes I am just giving my opinion and I can't state it as being fact. Just like you cant state the opposite of my opinion is fact as you know as much as I do. None of us know the ins and outs of the club and just have our own opinions which was my understanding we are entitled to on this forum. Feel free to block me if my opinions offend you.

No, a moment of frustration, laid at your door, so for that I apologise. I do not think he is blameless, but ‘I think he is just one of many actors at the club who should share this blame. Just find it wearying seeing people again and again lay the entirety of our woes at his door.
