Have you bled your rads?  Might be an air block somewhere?

If there is air and it is pressurised (combi or sealed system) double check the pressure on the boiler and use the filling coil

Not bled the rads but would they still go hot/work if not? Reason I ask is that the ones some radiators still warm up even if it is at the wrong time.

What is a filling coil? You're talking to a total amateur when it comes to plumbing/boiler stuff by the way lol lol

Are the rads that were on the closest to the boiler?

I'm no expert myself but I'm wondering if you've accidentally set the timer to come on briefly at a time when you didn't intend them to, and it only gets as far as heating the first couple in the chain before it goes off again?

I THINK most thermostats can still only tell the boiler to have the heating on or not. If the boiler is sending hot water to the system it's because the thermostat has told it to.

I'm not familiar with your type of thermostat but modern ones do generally let you have the heating doing different things on different days and sometimes several different things on one day, if that makes sense. Goodness knows it took me a few goes to get mine right

Sorry…. I’ve just re-read up the post!

ignore what I put!

If the rads that are coming on do not have TRV controls on them, then they’ll act like an overrun…. If everything else comes on/ goes off when programmed to do so, your absolutely fine

would recommend putting a TRV on all your rads so you can manage the temperature more effectively and they’re really not expensive and it’s DIY

However!  Make sure you keep one (bathroom towel rail or rad generally) without any controls as one rad should always be available to act as an overrun….

I'm guessing the TRV is the knob/dial on the side which can be adjusted (numbers 1-5 on it).

If so, 2 of the 3 that came on unexpectedly do have them. The other one doesn't. One of the 2 is in the main bathroom.

Reassuring though that if everything else comes on as normal then all is fine. All are due to come on at 5pm so can update shortly! Thank you.

@Bellend Sebastian the 3 that came on are closest to the boiler (hallway, bathroom and bedroom). Initially we thought it may have been accidentally set incorrectly so that was the reason for one of the resets. Since then we've been quite particular in making sure all is set correctly for the times we prefer. Mon-Fri same time each morning and evening. Sat/Sun same time each morning and evening...

that’s right - TRV (knob with numbers) = Thermostatic radiator valve

Just check to see whether the programmer works… and then at least you can put that issue to bed…

A whole series of rads shouldn’t really come on without being asked to though…. If it continues to be an issue, get a plumber out, I don’t know if your system is zoned or not?  It maybe an iffy zone valve?   I had one fail in the closed position a couple of weeks ago, turning my bedroom into a fridge!

We've had our heating on and off,  mainly off however, though the log burner has been lit most evenings.

It was a little cool in the house over the weekend but as Mrs. FFF was away, I felt it wasn't worth having the rad's on just for me. At one point I just put on a extra fleece when it got too nippy and I was fine.

I wouldn't have got away with that when my daughter lived here though. She would just have a thin top on and welly up the heating if cold. If I ever suggested she put something thicker on instead, well, even I would run for cover.

I think we will end up having to call an engineer out, just to be on the safe side and get something sorted before winter properly sets in.

We rang Danfoss just now for technical support. Had someone very patronising and rude and was absolutely no help at all.

That’s irritating…  No need for rudeness

I was all sorted for £80 and it was a bugger of a job as it was well hidden!  It’s just one of things…. Our homes demand cash from us on occasions!

Like wolfox said sometimes it's like the house needs you to pay it sometimes!

Bite the bullet and get a local gassafe engineer in, possibly  one well recommended  by mates.

We had an ongoing issue with the main radi6 in our living room for about 2 years!

It just would not heat up.

We had 3 different  plumbers in, they bled the system, bled the rad, took it off, desludged within an inch of its life, added chemicals etc...still no good.

We have small bore pipes and eventually  had to call out a specialist  firm from Coventry  who deal in small bore piping to flush out the system...best £500 I spent...7 hours of work by them and the rad is piping hot 1 year on.

As the price rises haven't been as high as predicted, our current electricity and gas prices are still below the price cap. With the £66 grant from the government our bills are now cheaper than they were last winter.

With the raw gas prices appearing to stabilise, the energy prices might not hit the cap which would be good news.

Yeah my prices haven’t gone up either. Starting to wonder if this is all

I'm intrigued as to what's going on with it. I hope you get it fixed and you remember to tell us how the mystery was solved

I dunno. If our usage yesterday was repeated throughout the month November's gas and electric would cost us about £400, but it was an expensive day with the heating on for longer, a big dinner cooked and family enjoying irritatingly long showers

I think we're on course for it costing roughly what the monthly is at the moment, so the right side of £300

I've set the thermostat at 18 degrees which Is less than normal.

It's absolutely fine with a jumper on but because it doesn't take long to keep the downstairs at that temperature the radiators upstairs don't have time to heat up so it's actually colder upstairs.

Fingers crossed that things stabilise.

I’m paying a couple of pounds shy of five hundred quid a month, which is a big increase on last year, and more than double what I was paying under my fixed rate for years.

It’s a stupid amount to spend, and I dread to think what it’ll be as and when the predicted rises kick in

Woke up, went downstairs, boiler has been leaking slowly leaving a nice little puddle on the worktop :(

Ours has been doing that for a year. I’ve been recharging the water pressure, running it for ten minutes then rinse and repeat all this time.

Wife insisted we replace it. Engineer said to replace it. Just had a quote for £3800. I’m going to sit in a dark corner and rock backwards and forwards slowly for the rest of the day.

Apparently she needs a new boiler more than I need a new motorbike. Wives are shit.

£3800 to replace a boiler????

should be ~£1.5k tops

is there a specific specification making it so expensive?

You definitely need a plumber…. Hopefully it’s nothing sinister - fingers crossed

in the meantime, try and locate where it’s coming from…  Can you get a rag to tie around it?

Can't even see where the water is dripping from, we see it on the bottom of the metal frame casing over the boiler, but not specifically where the leak is coming from.

Thankfully managed to get someone to come out and take a look (and to see the thermostat too).

Word of warning for any Bedford-based Foxes - don't use Bedford Plumbing company. Very rude when I rang them up! He said he might be able to come tonight, but couldn't confirm. I then politely said that's great, if we manage to find someone before then as it's emergency, we'll let him know and save him a wasted journey. No word of a lie, his response was 'oh don't bother then, can't be dealing with people like that). Rude!

Another local company (PipeLines plumbing and heating) was much more accommodating and friendly - similar conversation to start with and didn't mind us calling as a courtesy if we did get someone out.
