Superb match this.

Clemens played really well again, he pushed Smith to hit his top levels. Smith was fantastic, over 100 average.

Until about set 6 there was only 2 breaks of throw in the match. Both players did well on their own throw.

Looking forward to the next match, expecting a 6-4 or so, tight match.

Mvg to win and get most 180s 2/1 will do me.

Only problem with MVG is, he tends to get first 2 T20’s in and then goes for the 18 or 19’s. Does me in every time I back him for that bet 🤣

Was really hoping the Leicester boy Van den Bergh would pull off an upset here!

I love watching the sport and played a lot of darts when I was young but I don't fully agree with the mentality of the crowd. I remember when I was playing against friends we were playing mind games against each other and it worked as it is very easy to lose concentration when you are even slightly upset. It's the nature of the game.

That said, I don't mind the pros playing these mind games but I think the crowd should be kept out of this. I understand there's a tradition of drinking, singing etc in darts but I feel booing certain contestants isn't right. What's next? Start booing snooker players we don't like maybe? Tennis is also heading this way lately with crowd getting more involved and even booing certain players.

If the Hearn’s wanted to push snooker that way they would have done so by now. The atmosphere you see across the PDC events has been cultivated on purpose over the last 20 or so years. They’re clever business people who have spotted an opportunity to turn darts in to an arena sport that now travels around Europe/the world and makes shit loads of money.

Whether you agree with it or not, it’s ultimately been good for the game in a wider sense in my opinion (sky’s darts coverage is exceptional and look how popular it is when it’s on the TV, I imagine the BDO were it still on the BBC would have benefitted too), even if it means unfortunately alienating some of your hardcore support (same could be said for The Hundred in cricket, but cricket didn’t need a revamp, darts probably did) which it no doubt has. Factor in the quality of darts now compared to 20 years ago too, could be recency bias from me but averages just seem to be going up and up. This WC has been some of the best quality darts I can remember.

I do get why that upsets some people but the same could be said for the football too, ultimately, the people who spend the most money are the ones that these corporations want to market towards.

I think the players are probably used to it by now, there will be a whole generation who are coming through who have only ever known darts with a party atmosphere. Players like Barney, Jackpot, VVDV, James Wade etc may have known it different, but they’ve played in the PDC for that long they know what they’re signing up for.

That was really insightful and thank you. The PDC then should allow players to play more mind games and I mean between throws. Not just looks and gestures but also verbally. By verbally I don't mean abuse between them but clever one liners which we'll be able to listen when watching the sport on TV.

Just my take on things, some might think I’m miles off lol

It’s funny you say that, it wouldn’t surprise me to see darts players mic’d up at some point in the future, like they do with fielders at the cricket, maybe not at the worlds. I said to my dad yesterday it wouldn’t surprise me if Price had been encouraged to put those ear defenders on, it’s all about building his character up and the publicity has been off the scale. I do think a lot of them play up to it a bit, but fair play to them they look like they’re having the time of their lives the players.
