Sporting theatre already, here's hoping the rest of the series matches it for quality and drama.

As long as there's around 40-50 overs play tomorrow there will be a result. Nailing Khawaja early wins England the match.

Forecast has deteriorated a bit further today. I'm not sure whether they'll get enough in to get a result for either side.

According to Google!

The 100% of rain is for 9am and 10am...

Haha you gotta be pig sick as an Aussie. It's barely rained for weeks in the UK, first test, they've got all day with nearly all their wickets to hit a reasonable target. Gonna get rained off.

Apparently the percentage means area covered, not chance of rain.

You can still get 10-1 on the draw. It's quite tempting. According to the met office it will be drizzling at 1300. Then there is cloud cover and 60% humidity. So looking better for England. Robinson, Anderson and Broad should thrive in those conditions.

It is tempting but also they can play until 7:30 today so even 1-7:30 is loads of time

Yes - plus the forecast just improved on refreshing! Now there is no drizzle forecast at 1. Probably unwise to bet on the English weather! That way madness lies. The best thing is that the humidity remains quite high.

Alternatively, Australia have several hours to survive in warm, damp, humid conditions that will massively favour the bowlers, and three of their best batters are already out. If it's rained off it'll be England who are disappointed.

But the Met office forecast suggests every chance of three or four hours play, which would be plenty of time for either side to win.

Going forward with cricket, we do have day night tests anyway. Perhaps when heavy rain is expected for large portion of the day time, maybe the start time can change and allow play to carry on until as long as possible.. or perhaps till 10pm. They got floodlight use them, least everyone is getting there money worth and we get a result. Looking at the first case rain is set ease a little up to 3pm, so start the match then.

It would involve playing with a completely different ball to the rest of the match.

It happens anyway in a normal days play.

Do they switch from a red ball to a pink ball then? 🤣🤣

I love it when people suggest just changing the start/finish time of a major sporting event, especially for something as unpredictable as the weather, as though it wouldn't potentially affect thousands of spectators

The outfield will be the bigger issue with how heavy it’s coming down.

Less chance of boundaries.

Lunch to be taken 1230, no play before then.

But it’s not that simple. Think of all the other logistics. Policing etc.

I’m not certain conditions are that great for us. The ball is 30 overs old and it’s a day five pitch which is still slow, hopefully the cloud cover will help

Fair enough. I've just got to be optimistic. It's been a weird pitch at times. Previously cloud cover has lead to a bit of swing.

I’m confident that if we put it in the right areas then we’ll get them for under 250. Head and Khawaja will be the big wickets.

To be fair, with cricket there's known to be lots of flexibility, and whenever tickets are bought it does come with a notice saying times of play may change. Understand it may not work with other sports though.
